Maybe you "meant" something different, but I can only go by the words you put on screen. Saying something is an acronym by definition means that's how it originated. This isn't nitpicking, this is similar to what is going on with the "Ole Miss" phrase. Truth and facts are flexible because they're on what they think is the right side.

Eventually they will get rid of the rebel name as well. This is one step towards doing that. Same thing happened in Illinois with the Chief. First they got rid of the Chief's performances, than they got rid of the mascot, than they took the logo away, now there going to add a new mascot that has nothing to do with Fighting Illini. They are gradually tearing things down so people are less likely to notice what's going on and will be more likely to accept the slight change.
