#15While these scammers are pure scum, I do have to mostly agree - how on earth could you fall for this, and even if you do how do you possibly manage to lose this amount of $. I mean they asked for $85 to start - how on earth does that balloon into $80,000 without you ever getting suspicious??
If he'd just lost the paltry $85, I wouldn't give him any points for being smart, but I could sort of forgive that - how many people wouldn't be tempted to give up that amount in the hopes that $2.5 million would suddenly fall in their lap, a fairly good risk/reward ratio! I remember back when I used to get those scam emails all the time and instantly delete them, I would often joke with my friends, "imagine one of those thousand emails was actually legitimate, and you missed your chance because you assumed it was a scam!" But I still am at a loss how $85 could become $80,000 - really have trouble understanding how anyone could be that gullible.Comment -

#16I don't even feel bad for the guy, pure stupidity. I used to work at a Credit Union dealing with loans. Had this older couple ready to go on an auto loan, final documents may have even been signed. Then they told me they were wiring the money to Florida (I worked in the Midwest) and they hadn't even seen the car in person yet. Long story short, I told them to give me all the stuff they had on this car and the people selling it. Everything was bogus... stuff with the VIN on the car was f'd up, Googling the name and address brought up scam sites, nothing good. Luckily I caught it and saved these guys $15k. Amazing how some people don't even think logically when spending that kind of money.Comment -

#21Rules to life - never pay for anything in lotto's or freebies to get that something.. It's always scam..
If the deal is to good also for anything it's probably a scam.. Never give anything away unless you get cash in hand first.. Fake money orders and cashier checks are out there..
Anything coming from South Africa is a scam period.. Never give your credit card numbers or anything out over cold telephone calls or random emails as well..
This old timer got had by greed with this scam, the lure of big money if he pays up a little first.
Old and very young people especially want to trust others and in today's times you just can't do that.. Too many scammers out there unfortunately..Last edited by JIBBBY; 10-18-17, 11:15 PM.Comment -

#35Someone tried to run a scam on me from craigslist last week.
Was looking for travel trailers and found one I liked. Contacted them. They said the trailer was in OK city.
Upon arrival of my funds through an ebay account($1500), they would ship out my trailer free of charge.
I had 5 days to look over the trailer. If I didn't like it, they would come and get it.
I live in PA. $1500 would chew up fuel costs for a 2k mile trip to and from OK city and another to and from if
I didn't like it. They would lose money.
I replied I don't buy sight unseen and called them out on their scam. They would get $1500 and I would get no trailer.
I told them I reported them and if caught, don't drop the soap.Comment
