It's died down a lot these days. But in my youth it was considered traitorous to follow AFL in Queensland or New South Wales. It was the chardonnay sipping Melbourne crowd who liked it. Game is fully national now but Rugby League is still the main interest game in those states.

1) Melbourne to watch the Australian Open. Can swim the Reef.
2) West coast to Perth.
3) Stop offs in Asia on the way back, b4 I circle back to the States.

Get off in Bali and you can fly just about anywhere in Asia from there for about $100 or less. Check out Thailand for a few days, then Vietnam. Hire a scooter and visit Cambodia. Would be an awesome trip and a pretty cheap way to see so much of this part of the world.
