If you go thru history, I'd argue that Vince Lombardi was the best coach from the Super Bowl era. Pretty simple reason:
*He got the MOST out of his personnel.

The team stunk before he got there. He inherited a team without much direction. Got them up to speed to win within a couple years. They won big. When he left, the franchise declined pretty quickly. Small asterisk on his failed return to Washington.

Belichick had success with the Giants and Patriots. But it does get overblown. People want to equate success with greatness. Belichick was fortunate, he crossed paths with two all-time players. Lawrence Taylor and Tom Brady.

Nashy, that's a great point about Starr. I remember watching the videos with Vince, Starr and Zeke Bratkowski in the film room.

Back then, it wasn't unusual for the QB to have latitude to "call his own game." I actually love that. The QB is the guy who sees the defense.

One of my pet-peeves in Coll Football. What is with all the line-audibles from the booth? Line up, look to the sidelines, and then re-set. Cmon, sport is a game of reaction. I hate that procedure, and I think it leads to bad play-calling.
