Rock Legend, Icon Ronnie Hawkins dead at age 87
I'm a huge fan of "The Band"

Those unfamiliar, "The Band" was one of the greatest Canadian rock groups of all time.
Rush and The Band, in my opinion are the greatest Canadian based groups of all time.
(We had a Canadian rock thread a couple years back if memory serves)

Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks were a successful act in the early 60's
He parted ways and then influenced The Band.

The Band consisted of rock giants, Levon Helm, Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, and others, most of them were with Ronnie and the Hawks.

Ronnie was and is one of rock and roll's icons, legends, and all time great.
Talent scout, musician, singer, songwriter, just about every aspect of the rock industry Ronnie was an all time great.
He influenced Roger Waters (Pink Floyd) he backed Bob Dylan in Dylan's first electric tour (after Dylan made the transition from acoustic to electric)

And on, and on, and on.

Rock and roll lost a legend last night.
RIP sir, much respect what you have done for all genres of rock.

    Here's the news link.

    Here's a brief bio

And here's one of my all time personal favorites of mine

You, I and JJ can only hope to live to 87 years old. I gave him props for living that long. Cut me some slack Stevie.

Are any of them still playing? My dad said Ronnie owned a farm in Ontario before he got sick.

                                That's really cool.

                                No, not together.
Levon Helm died, Rick Danko, died, Robbie handles all the the band's business affairs these days, you know, royalties, shit like that.
Bob Dylan is like 1000 years old, he's still alive and kicking, but he wasn't a regular.

Their swan song so to speak was 1978's epic "The Last Waltz"
Monumental farewell, that was some 44 years ago.

Nice post Steve, and yes Ronnie and the Band made some of the most incredible music out there.
I feel pretty privileged and honored to have seen the Band play many times, and several Ronnie and the Hawks shows with different line ups Even had the good fortune to smoke a joint with Levon and Rick back in the day.

And by the way, you can’t expect an uneducated dumb fuk like Jibby to even have a clue as to what culture and good music is.
Im not surprised at all, when you’re a fuk’in sad waste of space on the planet like trump suk’in Jibby, you have no life.

Again, nice remembrance thread for Ronnie. He was definitely one of the great ones. Good to see a few people on here know real rock and roll history and damn good music.

Rest easy Rompin’ Ronnie Hawkins and thanks brother.

When I was in my 20's I used to work in Boston.
Boston has some great music pubs.

One Friday night the girl I was seeing at the time went to this blues pub to watch Rick Danko play solo.
We were watching from the bar, and I started chit chat with the dude sitting next to me, he knew his music for sure, and I was holding up my end of the conversation.

Dude says to me, "What do you do" I tell him I'm in IT, I was a horn player until I was about 21 but stopped, nobody is in real need for a trombonist. I said to the dude "What do you do"?

He told "I'm Aerosmith's business manager"
I said to myself "Yeah, right"
After a couple of minutes, I thought to myself, "This is Boston, Aerosmith is Boston based, their home"
The dude was telling me stuff you can't bullshit, he was totally on the level.
I said to him, "What's the matter, Steve can't do the numbers", he says "Steven's actually very business smart, he just can't be bothered"

I nudge my girlfriend at the time and say "How cool is this, we're drinking with Aerosmith's business manager"

                                    True story

All good, your question was very valid.
If two of the four mainstays (Danko and Helm) were still alive I'm sure they'd still be out there.
Robbie Robertson still gets up on stage from time to time.

I just watched the other day "Heart" do a Royal Albert Hall gig from a couple of years ago, and the Wilson sisters are (I think) 69 and 74

When I was in my 20's I used to work in Boston.
Boston has some great music pubs.
The only place in Boston one of my bands ever played was Green Street Station in Jamaica Plains.
Don't tell me it's still open...

Robbie Robertson still gets up on stage from time to time.
Not to nitpick your post but The Band had 5 original members. Pianist and co-lead vocalist Richard Manuel committed suicide in 1986, keyboard player Garth Hudson is still alive but resides in an assisted living facility so he wouldn't be touring

Green Street's been closed for a few years now.
The original Nirvana band, before Dave Grohl was with them, I mean the original band played there.
COVID closed down a lot of them.
There's a little joint around the Fens we went to all the time.

Cambridge has some good clubs too,

Yeah, I heard Garth can't get around much anymore, didn't know he's in a nursing home.
                                                  Thanks for that.
