You've already seen how stupid replay is.

They call guys safe for 2b double play toe drag (standard SS/ 2B style)...they miss hr calls, they miss tags yet still fukk up the replay
      It's ridiculous.

In the NFL they allow a coach to call for a replay except during the last minutes of the half and game.

      When it counts.

Not to mention, if they actually got rid of the ump, traditionalists will bail on the game, at the very least. I seriously doubt it helps gain a fan base.

They would have to sell a different kind of game to the next generation.

      Not going to happen.

That said never understimate the power of subtle changes over time.

One other point for not needing challenges or replays like the NFL is they play 10x more games so a ref error in NFL is much more critical than an error in MLB. Very rarely a team in MLB missed the playoffs because of a bad call or two in a couple games.

Even in tennis with all the technology they still have a ref so it's not going to go away in MLB.

Who are the managers going to argue with if there is no umpire? What happens when benches empty? Will the machine bring order to the game? What if a manager pulls out the home plate and throws it at the machine out of frustration?

You still need humans to control emotions as the machine has no emotions.

VAR is badly needed in this sport. It's 2022 FCS

Robots will be calling balls and strikes within ten years, maybe five.

Can't believe I missed this thread... amazing looks at these calls. WOW. Umpires should lose their jobs over these calls. Are they drinking while calling balls and strikes?

The whole world is clamoring for robo-umps.

Two problems, Manfred is the worst commissioner of all the four major pro sports in the history of pro sports and doesn't have the balls to do it, and the umpires union will fight that to the end of time and make this shit storm even a bigger shit storm.

Just watch if Manfred and his boot licks try.
Angel Hernandez will start whining about racism again, yadda, yadda, yadda.
Manfred is so spineless he doesn't want to deal with all that.
But Manfred has no problem trying to get rid of something as irrelevant as eliminating the shift, but solving an umpire crisis with robo-umps, God forbid he should go there.

His answer to solving problems is...
Just ask Ken Rosenthal how he deals with problems, I'm sure Ken will tell you.

                        *not for nothing*
Entry level umpires make minimum 150k, I know for sure the mean average salary for MLB umpires is 188k, and I think Cowboy Joe is the highest paid at 450k per season, plus all of them get meal money like the players do per game.

Who remembers fat Bruce Froemming who once lost his shit one day and called an administrator a "Stupid Jew bitch"

Fat Bruce once received a ten game suspension for going into the Dodgers (at the time) dugout pregame and asked Piazza for an autograph, telling Mike "I asked Johnny Bench for an autograph once pregame, he refused and went 0 for 4 that game with three strikeouts with me calling balls and strikes"

                        True stories.

I think this could be the worst I've ever seen it in any given season. Just when you think they've done it all, they top it.

Never seen it this bad...or rather, this unprofessional.
