My Smoking New $30 Computer

So I finally got fed up with Microsux to the point that I started looking into Linux again. I ran Ubuntu a few years ago until the motherboard went out on that computer and I just never bother installing it again on my new one.

But I read that Linux Mint is regarded as being more popular with a lot of people than Ubuntu. And Mint released their latest version yesterday (Mint 20 - Long Term Service until 2025). So I bought a 256 Gb thumb drive ($30) and installed Mint on there. No other new hardware. Just a thumb drive. And I feel like I upgraded everything! System resources aren't taxed. Response time is awesome. I'm so thrilled with this and so far I haven't run into anything that I normally do with Windows that I can't do on Linux (I ran into that problem a lot 10 years ago on Ubuntu.) I've only been on it for two days, so the jury is still out but so far I'm stoked with this new system. And since it's running from a thumb drive, I can put it in my pocket and take it with me wherever I go.

I highly encourage anyone who is unhappy with Microsux to give Linux a try. There are a bazillion different distributions.

Yes you can. This again largely depends on what protocols your mail server supports. I'd recommend looking at Thunderbird or Evolution.
If your exchange server supports imap(most do) you can use just about any linux mail client.

Imap will also allow you to use calendars

Yeah, O365 is very clunky, the web interface might be better. You can always spin up linux in a VM (if you're on Windows now, use something like Virtualbox). Both Linux and Virtualbox are 100% free, so it won't cost you anything to test it out. Performance of Linux may be a bit sluggish in a VM depending on the resources you allocate to it, however, you can essentially test it and see how it works before you commit to anything.

Whether you change to Linux or not, you can dump Office 365 and not pay the yearly ransom. I dumped it over a year ago and haven't regretted a day of it. Download Libre Office (available on both Windows and Linux). It functions faster than O365 and you can save files in MS format.

Another way you can test out whatever Linux flavor you want to try, you can download the iso, flash it to either a CD/DVD or thumb drive (make sure you don't have anything on the drive that you want to keep because it will be overwritten). Then you can boot to the iso and run a live session without installing it. If you don't like it, download another and try it until you find the one that fits your needs. And then you can install it to a thumb drive or external drive if you want and keep your Windows system intact.

I’ve used Linux on a flash drive to recover files on a fubar’d windows machine on a few occasions but never as the primary os. Might give it a go in the set up you describe. Haven’t used it in a long time- it was kind of clunky the last time I tried it.
