They are still paying Saberhagen and also had a deal with Bernard Gilkey. Lucky for them, when they traded Gilkey to Arizona, part of the deal was they picked up payments.

The reason the Met’s did all these types of deals was because ownership was getting 10-15% in interest per year from their great financial advisor.....Bernie Madoff. We know how that turned out.

What a great agent to come up with this deal. Most athletes would have pissed away their money by now. If Bobby blows his money one year, he just has to wait until July 1st and he’s loaded again.

Brilliant contract for Bonilla. Hit .270 with 95 homers as a Met.

OK just read up on this deal...

Tell me why this is a bad deal?

Mets cut Bonillia to free up cash (the revised contract)

They sign Mike Hampton, who is NLCS MVP and make World Series following year.

Hampton leaves in 01, Nets get compensation pick, becomes David Wright.

IDK I'd defer 30 mm over 30 years to make a WS and get a perennial AS for a decade.

Obviously the deal did not work out. However, as a financial analyst, I would love to pay someone slightly more over a long period of time rather than up front. That is why companies are so successful at selling annuities to old people, everyone thinks they win. It appears the major sports markets grow in value 7-9% a year in value. So if they calculate the present value of a contract, it could be beneficial for both.

For example, say my annual cost of capital is 9%. Player says you can pay me $1M today or $200,000 for the next 6 years. Player thinks they are receiving 200k more and are happy. Corporation is happy because the Present value of those payments is only $978,000.

Lower upfront payments also means higher net cash flow which looks better to investors.

but it was just south of $6 million that they owed him, if they would have said we"ll give $1mil for 10 years, it still sounds like a good deal
NOT $1.2 Million for 25 YEARS

but I'm not a financial analyst, just looking at this from the outside and LMAO
