I talked to so many Red Sox fans that thought Buckner had to make the play to SEAL the World Series. They seem to forget that the damage was already done. Bullpen meltdown + Met clutch hits, game was already tied.

Loved the guy. He was a mainstay on the baseball field through my entire childhood. Very consistent hitter. A couple of tidbits. Buckner might have never been a first baseman if he hadn't suffered a staph infection in the 70's. He was a right fielder before then. When he was traded from the Cubs to the Red Sox, Boston threw in a player in that deal named Dennis Eckersley.

Bill was a great guy and one hell of a damn good baseball player!

And spot on Chucky, that one play doesn’t define anything, like you said, damage was already done. Win as a team, lose as a team. That’s baseball.
