The US did not defeat ISIS. In fact a US Army Intelligence Officer uncovered that the US and other nations were giving ISIS funding. It wasn't until Russia got involved in Syria in late 2015(one year after the US got involved) that ISIS started getting annihilated. ISIS was a CIA/Mossad project that was used as a way to destroy Syria and remove Bashar al Assad. When they failed to remove him they used the threat of ISIS as justification to bring US troops into Syria and get more involved.
