8 does matter because then the other team has to convert the 2-point try.

By going for it there, the other team then knows what it has to do. If you think you have a great play to convert, then sure I guess. But generally not good strategy.

Against an offense as good as Patriots, 2 point conversions for them aren't hard. So that was a play to win the game, because you go in thinking "We are either going to win the game here by getting the 2, or we don't and NE ties it up anyway".

Relax. It wasn't that stupid. Stopping the Patriots from gaining two yards is generally more difficult than gaining two yards yourself. Plus, you get the bonus of being up by two possessions if you convert. It's not like the Patriots, being down 7, are going to go for two and win by a point in the event of a fail. Odd call by Carroll, but actually pretty savvy.
