Trump tapped into people's anger at the politicians and political system they (the electorate) unknowingly created. As with many cases where people don't understand root causes and make even bigger mistakes trying to fix them, a portion of the electorate rallied around a guy who tells it like they think it is. Well, more precisely, he presents words in a manner that people mistake for 'telling it as it is', while contradicting himself, exaggerating, or just flat out making stuff up the same as most other politicians. But just like a dog who responds to tone of voice instead of the words, these people do mental gymnastics to convince themselves Trump's not a terrible candidate.


A guy commits to an obviously false mischaracterization of a neighboring country with close ties to us, is called out on it, and responds by imagining his make-believe wall a little higher....that's what it takes to impress you? If someone tells you they have a unicorn in their backyard, are you similarly impressed when they later tell you it's a slightly bigger unicorn?

Aleppo is a city Johnson brain farted on when he was asked about it (instead of the more reasonable question 'what about syria?'), and showed humility and grace by admitting afterwards that he needs to brush up on these things. So on the one hand, we have a candidate who admits to a mistake and that he needs to rectify it...and on the other hand, we have a guy like Trump who is unable to admit he was ever wrong even when his statements contradict each other. One guy doesn't know a major city in the country he has a policy for, and the other guy doesn't know that much of what he claims is not possible. One guy's first 'gaffe' is a fairly minor one that doesn't invalidate his policies, the other guy gaffes weekly if not daily.

So far, the worst mistake Johnson has made this campaign is less serious than the vast majority of mistakes Trump has made. Perhaps more importantly, Johnson demonstrated the ability to recognize a mistake and take appropriate action, a sign of character that Trump seems to lack completely. I'm sure there's no doubt Trump would have rattled off a more eloquent non-answer to avoid exposing his lack of knowledge, but I'd think you'd be tired of empty eloquence after 8 years of Obama
