    Signs of people being desperate
I'm watching the local news and police are investigating a series of ATM bank robberies using a fork lift! These crooks used a forklift and truck to remove the ATM from the ground and load it in a getaway truck living the forklift at the scene of the crime.

Is this common at other parts of the country?

Some wackjob in Maryland about 5 minutes from where I live got caught using their company truck and lift to steal a 450 gallon filled diesel tank. This was back when diesel was about $4.60 a gallon. How did they get caught?

Not from using the company truck, or leaving tracks or even the fact that a huge diesel tank was missing from the work site.....but from trying to sell the diesel on craigslist.

I just went to the ATM to make a deposit and the slot where you input the card was completely ripped away. Not sure if someone tried to rob it or not.

How much money is stored in a typical ATM? Does anyone know?

Geez, it's got to be more than that, doesn't it?

My personal limit is a thousand. There have to be others like that. I don't withdraw that much every time but sometimes I do.

It just seems like those kind of dollar figures could get depleted pretty fast some days. But I really don't know.

Their capacity is around 750 - 1500 notes. So if filled with twenties, they could be holding as much as 30,000 dollars.

                            Mudcat,

This is for the ATM's that are detached from the Bank building. They will not load these ATM's with more than that amount of money between 10 pm - 6:00 am.

An ATM that is in a building and is securely fastened on the building walls holds much more money. I agree.

Even 1500 bills sounds low. I remember seeing armed security guards refilling an ATM in college - they brought the whole tray mechanism on a hand dolly and you could see the stack of $20 bills through it - it was about 2 feet high and the bills looked pretty tightly stacked.

ATMs in gas stations, stores, ect (non bank ones) have about 3-5k in em. Bank ones are around 30k

Carrying a lot of cash around is not that bright; you begging to be mugged.

See Plaxico Burress. I pay everything with a check card; same as cash.

Oh okay that makes sense. 10-4.

In any case, lots of desperation all around for sure.

Over here in Costa Rica they close all ATM's from 10pm to 5am, sucks in a way if you are out and need money but makes it a lot more safe for everyone.

Had a recent incident with someone stealing water out of the fire hydrant by our office. Surprised the city never thought about checking our security cameras. Probably a contractor doing it or some local using it to fill his stock pond with the lack of rain.
