This goes on almost everywhere. I can only imagine what some of the other closed-door practices look like -- I'm sure we'd all be shocked.

I remember being at a Michigan State game in '98 watching Tom Izzo literally punch AJ Granger in the stomach during a timeout after Granger turned the ball over.

Ask Granger today what he thinks of Izzo, who is like a father to him.

These are grown men playing D-I basketball. If this tape surfaced from a 10-year-old's practice, I'd understand the backlash. People act like this guy got out his chainsaw and mask and started chasing players around the court.

No, but these are grown men. How about when I was in 9th grade and one of my freshman team football coaches hit me so hard in the earhole of my helmet with his palm that I got knocked to the ground? Or in college when one of my team mates was given the wrong route for scout team by one of our graduate assistants and my head coach came over and whipped his facemask around back and forth so hard that it probably gave him whiplash, all while yelling into his face with spit coming out of his mouth?

two ways of looking at it,many of Bobby Knight's players worship him, personally believe you can discipline and coach by raising your voice,
not by throwing chairs and balls, really no need to put your hands on the kids....

They usually deserved it though.

I'm all for the verbal onslaughts when a player fuggs up because I sure deserved them over the years, and saw nothing wrong with it because it was my own fault... Can't recall exact moments I had balls kicked or thrown at me, but if I did they were joke kick/throws to get me to shut up, etc. Not balls aimed at my grill point blank.

Once you step over the line into actually physically abusing them constantly, that's when you gotta be shown the door. You know every player wanted to just walk up to the coach and knock him the fugg out, but they knew they couldn't because they'd be dropped from the team and blow their college careers. That's why in the video they all just carried on and acted like a ball didn't even hit them.

I agree America is slowly getting pussified, but this isn't one of those cases. This is just a dickhead coach that apparently does it 24/7 and is in need of anger management. Apparently he acts like a choir boy when superiors are around, and then unleashes when he knows nobody can tattle on him... And that's how you know he's got issues.

Who would want to play for that guy? He was suspended 3 games and fined $50,000. Eric Murdock who reported him was let go from his position. Rice needs to be terminated and smacked around as well.

I think former players should be asked their thoughts, not sports writers who sit behind a desk. I bet Nick Saban has words come from his mouth like that in practice and jerks players around and he's won 3 titles in 4 years. These kids are going to school for free for playing basketball. It's called tough love.

I realize its hard to judge when you only see one clip out of thousands of hours of practice, but this certainly looks like it goes too far.

To me the best coaches always tried to make us into better men, not just athletes. I find it hard to believe that calling some 18 year old a pussy, c*nt, or faggitt is setting the kind if example you'd want from your coach.

At the very least, this guy seems like a classless piece of shit. Might be different if he had a few rings already, but I can't imagine this is anyway to get one.

I'm not trying to defend the guy -- I just think it's funny that people act appalled or stunned like it doesn't happen in a lot of programs. Trust me, it does.

This is a critical point, too. May not be politically correct to say it, but if the guy was winning, it would all either be swept under the rug or just ignored. You can't pull these stunts for long and go 12-18 or whatever. Not a good combination.
