Recap Of The Superbowl NY Giants/New England
What a huge collapse by the New England Patriots in the Superbowl. They go 18-0 leading up to the big game just to lose it. How can you not get motivated for one more game, probably the biggest game in NFL history? The Patriots were the number one offense in the league this year, yet they could only get 14 points on the NY Giants. The Patriots defense played great throughout the game. They stopped the Giants from scoring 7 times in a row, yet the Patriot offense could not put 1 point on the board during that. This Patriot offense was the number one offense in NFL history this year.
The offensive line of New England lost this game for them. Brady was under pressure all night, sacked five times and knocked down many more. When I say many more, I mean 20 times hard. The Patriots usually adjust at halftime, but they didn't and the NY Giants came out in the second half and got to Brady every time. The ball was snapped and the Giants were in Brady's face within 2 seconds. There are three guys from New England's offensive line going to the Pro Bowl this weekend and they should be embarrassed to go. They couldn't stop anyone from getting to Brady. And talk about bad kharma, did you see Belichick on the sidelines wearing his new red sweatshirt for the Superbowl? He has worn the same grey hoodie sweatshirt with the arms cut off all season and last season, too. So for the biggest game of your life, you switch. To top it off, Tom Brady has his girlfriend, Giselle there, she hasn't been to a game all season. Brady shaved his beard and cut his hair, which he has never done in the past after winning the AFC championship.
I believe the Buffalo Bills have been out-choked as Superbowl losers by the Patriots. They Patriots should be ashamed of losing this Superbowl after going 18-0 this season. This will always be remembered as the greatest upset in Superbowl history. Before this offensive line cost the game for them, Brady should have been on them by halftime about what was going on. In the 3rd quarter he should have been yelling at them on the sidelines if this was the biggest game of his life. Each time that the Patriots didn't put any points up on the board, Brady just sat on the bench instead of motivating the players for the next series like he has done in the past.
People may say that the defense lost the game for the Patriots, giving up that touchdown late in the game. The defense played great the whole game and gave the offense plenty of chances to get back on the field and score. But the number one offense in the league and the possible "Greatest Team Ever" could do nothing. They were actually going backwards on offense. The only problem I had with the defense was in the 4th quarter, the Giants had the ball, needing a touchdown to win, 3rd and 13 from from their own 47 yard line. Eli Manning was getting thrown to the ground but somehow got away and threw a Hail Mary pass that was caught at the Patriot's 25 yard line. If they had sacked him, it would have been 4th and about 20 yards to go. If they didn't get that down the game would have been over. All Rodney Harrison had to do was to knock the ball down, but nope, he let the Giants catch it for the first down at the Patriots's 25, and we know what happened from there.
What you have to like about the greatest quarterback ever is that Tom Brady never admits when he is hurt and never uses it as an excuse for a bad game. Most of the players in the NFL do. What ever the reason, Brady didn't look to be his usual Brady-rific self in the last two games. I think the ankle really was bothering him. He looked to have been hurt in the first 5 minutes of the playoff game with San Diego. A week later one of the Patriot's players mentioned that Brady had been playing with the flu that day, even though never said it or tried to use it as an excuse. But in that game with the Chargers, after suffering a mild sprain in the first half, Brady looked out of sorts and tossed three interceptions. Superbowl Sunday it was more of the same. Assuming that Brady was not 100%, given the tenacity of the Giants' pass rush, I wonder if it had an outcome on the game. Bottom Line: I guess Brady's leg wasn't strong enough to hoist the trophy.
I have to give my props though to the New England Patriots Wes Welker. I love this guy. Without him do the Patriots go 18-0? No way! I would vote for this guy for the MVP of the league this year. This guy was a starter on the best offensive team ever in the history of the NFL, and he had a very good game in the losing effort in the Superbowl. He's also a special teams contributor. If the Patriots had held on to win the Superbowl, he would have been the MVP. Among the media members who had a vote for Superbowl MVP, Welker came in second to the winner, Eli Manning. Just think about this for a minute. The media panel assembled to choose the game's MVP, with the NY Giants Justin Tuck, Michael Strahan and many of their defense who terrorized Brady all game, chose Wes Welker of the Patriots. There were also many offense players for the Giants who could have gotten it. Welker is one of the best small receivers I have ever seen. Super quick, fast decision making on the fly, great hands and a relentless motor. What's not to like? After Brady, the team's MVP, at least on my chart. The greatest hot receiver I've ever seen. Clever, acrobatic and tough. Lines up in the slot in the three-wideout base offense.
Can the Patriots come back strong again next year, or has the wind been knocked out of their sails? Will Spygate continue to haunt them? We'll just have to wait for next season in this continuing soap opera that is the New England Patriots.
