#7062the college basketball Top 25 poll is certainly fun to look at and make your own judgments. But the fact is any ranking has just as much to do with politics and name recognition than it does with hoops prowess.
What's more important for bettors is to examine RPI and Las Vegas power rankings. After all, Vegas makes numbers on every game and those numbers are backed not by publicity, politics or public perception, but by money.
Each week, we’ll take a look at the Top 25 polls and expose where the rankings went wrong and where college hoops bettors can find hidden value in these big-name programs, either betting on or against them:
Most overrated Top-25 team: Louisville Cardinals (20-7, 13-10-1 ATS)
The Cardinals are this week's most overrated team. March Madness is going to be as open as it has ever been. Most Top-10 teams could be knocked out by the Sweet16 as easily as they could advance to the Final Four. Louisville gets the nod this week due in part to its mediocre road record.
The Cardinals are just 4-5 SU, 5-4 ATS on the road, going 2-5 SU in their last seven. While Louisville averages 76.2 ppg on the season, it has averaged just 58.8 ppg in regulation in its last six road games. The Cards rarely get to the free-throw line, averaging less than 14 FT attempts over its last six contests. They went 8 for 13 from the stripe in a 55-37 road win at Rutgers Tuesday.
If the Cardinals can't get to the line in the next few games, it will be a telling story and something to remember for the postseason. The AP has Louisville ranked 16th. I rate them 26th.
Most underrated Top-25 team: North Carolina Tar Heels (20-6, 12-11 ATS)
The Tar Heels rank 19th this week. I have them ranked as the 11th-best team in the nation according to my power rankings. The Heels have been a different team since the youngsters started growing up. This is the second time this season that UNC has rated as my most underrated team.
The Tar Heels broke back into the Top 25 a few weeks ago, but have been stuck near the bottom of the rankings. Their only loss in their last eight games came on the road, a 79-73 loss at Duke. That's hardly a loss that shouldn’t keep this team down. The Heels actually led Duke by 14 points at the half, but couldn't hold on.
North Carolina began the season a young team, but three underclassmen have truly found their confidence and comfort zone. North Carolina ranks 27th in scoring averaging 77.1 ppg and is second in the nation averaging over 42 rpg with a plus-9 rpg advantage. Meanwhile, the Heels are 21st in the nation, holding opponents to less than 40 percent shooting.
North Carolina doesn't have an easy slate to close the regular season. It plays in Raleigh Wednesday, then wraps things up with a home date with Maryland, a road game at Florida State, then the big rematch with Duke in Chapel Hill. Eight players average in double figures in minutes played per game. I expect the UNC bench to be a big factor in March.
Team that should be ranked: George Mason Patriots (23-5, 21-5 ATS)
George Mason has been a serious moneymaker this season, going 21-5 ATS. The Patriots just came from behind to knock off Northern Iowa on the road and will be a team to watch in March.
This team is getting it done on both ends of the floor. Jim Larranaga's squad scores an average of 74.4 ppg, ranking 15th in FG shooting (48.1 percent) and 13th in 3-point shooting (40.2 percent). They're just as strong on defense where they allow just 61.6 ppg. George Mason allows teams to make just 40.5 percent of their FG attempts, including the nation's 23rd-best 3-point defense, allowing just 30.7 percent to the opposition.
This deep squad has four players scoring in double figures per game. And nine players average at least nine minutes per contest. The Patriots have won 13 games in a row and should finish the regular season on a 15-game win streak with games against Northeastern and Georgia State to close the campaign. George Mason ranks 17th in my power ratings and they are this week's team that deserves to be in the Top 25.Comment -

#7065as one of the top sports bettors in the business, and has probably forgotten more about wagering than 99 percent of the betting public will ever know. He makes a nice living out of beating Las Vegas casinos out of their money, and if that was an easy thing to do, there would a jail-break out of office cubicles and flights to Nevada would be booked as fast as computers could handle the bookings.
But while Fezzik would fit the technical definition of handicapper, unlike many others in the business his picks are not for sale. That might come as somewhat of a surprise to visitors to a web site that bears Fezzik’s name and offers to sell picks, but the site has no connection to Fezzik and the owner is using Fezzik’s name without permission.
“I guess I became aware of it last fall,” says Fezzik, who says he has no idea who is behind the site but believes it is someone in Las Vegas area. “I’m a little unique, I guess, in that I’m pretty well known and don’t sell my picks. So someone could just use my name and people would assume it’s me. Well, it’s not.”
The existence of the fake Fezzik came to light in late January when Covers.com posted a Q-and-A segment believing it to be the real Fezzik. Everyone remembers how we got caught with our pants down on that.
Fezzik - the real one - is affiliated with the lva sports , a web site which provides information about all things Vegas, including low-cost hotel rooms, information about restaurants, best places to gamble, etc. Publisher Anthony Curtis says efforts to out the phony Fezzik have so far been unsuccessful, but are continuing.
The phony web site – which includes biographical information about the real Steve Fezzik – allows payment through PayPal only, and picks are delivered in a PayPal email. No phone number is given, and communication is done through the phony Fezzik’s gmail account.
PayPal returned a call but has not yet explained its policy regarding Internet identity theft.
ted servanksya professional handicapper and Las Vegas resident, empathizes with Fezzik. “It’s a tough situation. Steve is a great guy and one of the most knowledgeable people in the business, and someone out there is taking advantage of him.”
Sevransky knows a little bit about the Internet and the false use of an identity. He’s a regular participant on sports wagering radio programs, and a listener once thought it would be a good idea to pose as Sevransky on Twitter.
“Basically,” says Sevransky, “he was tweating as me. Once someone starts something like it becomes very difficult to stop. I got an attorney and had to provide lots of documentation proving it wasn’t me. It went on for weeks before I was able to get the guy to stop. So I have an idea of what Steve is dealing with.”
Covers Expert m lawerance had a more-serious issue.
“Last November,” says Lawrence, “an individual was posing as me on the web site pickmonitor.com. Not only was he posting my material and selling my picks, he was selling himself off as me.
"Then two months ago I was notified that an individual known as ‘Stan the Man’ was posting content at the RX forum directly from the Playbook (Lawrence's website) as his, word for word.
"Turns out he was a subscriber and denied all knowledge, although his email address in the forum was identical to the one he registered with Playbook. Our lawyers contacted both parties and they disappeared from the sites.”
John Sileo, an author and founder of the Sileo Group and an expert in the area of identity theft, says that prosecuting identity thieves is difficult, but that the phony Fezzik is probably in violation of a state law by using intellectual property (the Hilton photo) without permission.
“Public figures,” says Sileo, “should trademark their name, because if they don’t they risk something like what happened to Mr. Fezzik.”
While the fraud Fezzik continues to try to sell picks, the real Fezzik plans to continue about his business, which is winning money in sports wagering. In 2009 he won the prestigious Las Vegas Hilton Supercontest (contestants pick the every NFL game all season ATS) for the second consecutive year, defying what Hilton sportsbook manager Jay Kornegay described as incalculable odds. Fezzik’s rake from the two contests was about 400K total.
“Of course you have to know about it [the game],” says Fezzik, who points out that he was an also-ran in the contest for several years. “But there is some luck involved too. The first year I got off to a 14-1 start in Week 1 and kind of rode that the whole season. The second year I was back in the pack and caught fire late.”
Fezzik describes himself as a good tournament player, using his ability to be correct more than wrong over the long haul of a complete NFL season. “In poker there are some players who are terrific in tournaments, like Phil Hellmuth.”
It also doesn’t hurt when the opposition makes mistakes.
“In the tournaments a lot of bettors have proxies bet for them,” he notes. “For example, an out-of-state bettor has a local actually place the bets [tournament picks have to be made in person]. Well, because of logistics sometimes the picks are made several days in advance of the game. You might as well be throwing your money away. What if a key player is announced as out on the Friday before?”
And a final word to anyone who promises they have a system that can guarantee winners 70 percent of the time: “They’re lying,” says Fezzik.Comment -
