The Orlando Magic put their revamped lineup to the test again when they host the Boston Celtics in part of a fabulous NBA Christmas lineup.
General Manager Otis Smith did his Christmas shopping early by making two blockbuster trades last Saturday. The final haul was Gilbert Arenas, Hedo Turkoglu, Jason Richardson and Earl Clark, with the price tag of Rashard Lewis, Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus and Marcin Gortat.
Smith didn’t feel his team could win a title and thus made the drastic moves. The Magic are desperate to get a ring for center Dwight Howard, so he doesn’t leave as a free agent after next season.
Orlando (17-12 straight-up, 10-19 against the spread) has had mixed results since the trades. It lost games at Atlanta (91-81) on Monday and home to Dallas (105-99) on Tuesday.
Smith probably had some sleepless nights after those defeats, but Orlando rebounded with a 123-101 win over San Antonio on Thursday. The Magic were just two-point home favorites as the Spurs were riding a 10-game winning streak. Arenas had 14 points and nine assists in his new sixth man role. J.J. Re**** also added 17 off the pine.
The win snapped the Magic’s four game losing streak, both SU and ATS. They’re 2-8 SU and ATS in their last 10 overall.
Orlando seems to have its new starting lineup set with Richardson and Turkoglu at shooting guard and small forward respectively. They join holdovers Howard, power forward Brandon Bass and point guard Jameer Nelson.
The new rotation looks strong offensively, but questionable defensively. The Magic are tied for fifth in the NBA in points allowed (93.5 PPG). There’s also a big hole for a backup big man with Gortat gone. Smith needs to quickly find someone to fill that role.
Boston (23-4 SU, 15-11-1 ATS) doesn’t have any hangover from last year’s crushing finals loss to the Lakers. The trio of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen are wily veterans who ‘bring it’ every night and know this could be their last shot at another title.
The Celtics have a 14-game winning streak (8-5-1 ATS). Six were on the road (4-2 ATS), but only two against winning teams. They’re 10-3 SU and 9-4 ATS on the road overall. Boston’s defense is great home and away and is second in the NBA overall (91.4 PPG).
Boston’s last three games have come at home, with the latest Wednesday’s 84-80 win over Philly, failing to ‘cover’ as nine-point favorites. Ray Allen led with 22 points, but Boston could have easily lost.
Injuries are an issue for Saturday. Point guard Rajon Rondo (ankle) has missed the last three games and is doubtful for this one. Nate Robinson has played well in his absence, but isn’t a traditional point like Rondo, who leads the league in assists (13.8 APG). That forces the offense to run through Pierce more, which tires him down.
Center Jermaine O’Neal (knee) is probable after last playing Nov. 8. He’s also dealing with the flu. O’Neal will provide good depth behind 38-year-old Shaquille O’Neal as Kendrick Perkins (knee) has been out all year. Boston likes to play Howard straight-up defensively, but Shaq can only do it for a limited amount of minutes.
The aging Celtics will have had two days rest and are 7-2 ATS on two days or more rest this season.
This is the first meeting between the teams since Boston won the Eastern Conference Finals (4-2) last year. Boston is 3-2 SU and 4-1 ATS in the last five meetings in Orlando. The ‘under’ is 11-3 in the last 14 meetings overall.
Tip-off from new Amway Center is 11:30 a.m. (PT) and will be broadcast on ABC. That’s followed by the mouth-watering showdown of Miami and the L.A. Lakers.Comment -
