The Knicks are going to be horrible. Why did they even go after Amare if they are not trying to be a contender?

They know they won't be a contender this year. But they are hoping they will be able to get some of the big free agents next year, namly Carmelo Anthony/ Chris Paul. Either way the Heat will mop the floor up with them no matter who they get for the next 6 years.
This is what happens when you have a bad owner who hires terrible GM's and coaches. Sure Dantoni may get you to the playoffs but nobody who has a clue about the NBA thinks this guy can win rings with his style of coaching.

They'll be horrible this year, sure.

But having Amare will make it a much easier decision for Carmelo and Tony Parker/Chris Paul to decide to come to NY within the next two years.

Mello/Paul/Amare would be a contender for sure though. Would definitely be tough to get by the Heat but Mello has shown that he can he can get his shot anytime against Lebron, and Amare would destroy Bosh in the Paint. SJ after the Heat win this year teams are going to start making serious moves. The whole NBA is changing.

Duncan is done. He will retire after this year probably. Duncan will never leave the Spurs even if he plays for 2-3 more years.

Duncan had a great season last year, does not mean he will be a good player in 2011-2012 but Duncan's production per minute last year was on par with anyone in the league other than Lebron. He was the best big man in the game statistically and is still a better defender than Amare, Boozer, Bosh, or Lee.
