can't believe it if he did, he had such a sweet gig at mich. st., and he said he wanted to win another national title with them. but then again, a coaches word never means shit nowadays.

I heard early in the week that Izzo wouldn't take a pro job until he won 1 more National Title and this season he has his best shot again with all the guns coming back, so I don't think he will take the Cavs job even if he gets to coach that fk up Lebron.

You get very few guarantees in life but ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale, who turns 71 years old today, called in with one.

"Tom Izzo will not leave the sideline for the Spartans (to take the Cleveland Cavaliers job). Why in the world, if you are an elite coach making millions, would you want three seasons in one, why would you want to go coach a hundred games and go where you could tarnish your resume. Just ask (Rick) Pitino, (John) Calipari...I don't care if he has LeBron James, he is going to get fired in the NBA. A guy (Cavaliers coach Mike Brown) goes (61-21) and he gets fired."

As to why Izzo is not throwing cold water on the rumors:

"Let's face reality. It is a great way to get more money where you are at. It is a great way to have yourself stroked, we all want to feel love. What does he lose? But the bottom line is, if you are an elite coach, if you are a Roy Williams, you're a Mike Krzyzewski, you're a Tom Izzo, why would you jeopardize your legacy and looking to get fired. You lay your hopes on one super guy? Trust me, I sat there and it is a miserable, miserable feeling. I had Bob Lanier who had knee surgery and John Shumate had a blood clot and you are getting your head pounded day-after-day and you are saying "why, why did I do this?"

I can't imagine LeBron is going to be psyched about playing for a first-time NBA coach who's another defense-first type. I would think if this signing happens it's because the owner knew his team had suddenly gone into rebuilding mode.

Michigan State coach Tom Izzo met with his players on Tuesday, but did not give any indication as to whether or not he'd take the Cavaliers' vacant coaching job.

Michigan State assistant coach Mark Montgomery says Tom Izzo called a team meeting Tuesday, informing his players he has talked to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Montgomery says Izzo told the Spartans to focus on classes and workouts. Izzo did not tell the Spartans he was leaving the school to coach the Cavs.

Izzo told the team that Cleveland has a big interest in him and that he has a lot of thinking to do about it, a school source who was at the meeting told ESPN.com's Andy Katz.

But Izzo did not give any indication that he would accept the job, according to the source. Izzo continued to tell the players how much they have to work toward a potential national championship next season, beginning with summer workouts.

Two NBA sources told ESPN The Magazine's Chris Broussard that Izzo did not tell his players he would accept the Cavaliers job.

Meanwhile, Joel Ferguson, the chairman of the Michigan State Board of Trustees, said Izzo already turned down an offer from the Chicago Bulls this offseason, The Detroit News reported.

"Chicago made an offer to him," Ferguson said, according to the report. "Tom didn't run and say '[Chicago] made an offer, [so MSU] has to up the ante.' "

Ferguson said he spoke with Izzo on Monday and said the coach talked about his players and team matters, according to the report.

"We never once talked about something for Tom, so that's never been an issue. We're dealing with a person that's very happy at Michigan State," he said, according to the report.

The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer first reported Monday that Cavs owner Dan Gilbert and Izzo talked about the framework of a long-term deal, worth about $6 million a season for up to five years. Izzo makes more than $3 million a season and is under contract through 2016.

While the Cavaliers have discussed the parameters of a contract with Izzo, a source with knowledge of the talks told Broussard the reported five-year, $30 million offer is "a bit inflated" and that the job is not yet Izzo's to turn down.

New Cavaliers GM Chris Grant confirmed the club has had contact with Izzo and "a number" of other coaching candidates but would not provide any details.

The Michigan State staff doesn't know what Izzo will do, but according to a source, they still believe that ultimately he will stay at Michigan State without an assurance that free agent LeBron James would be with the Cavs.

Izzo did not get into specifics about the financial offer from the Cavs. But a college basketball source who has NBA experience and is friendly with Izzo said that the money offered -- reportedly $6 million -- will not change with or without James, and it remains an attractive offer to consider.
