This new foul-off-the-ball rule is going to impact NBA betting
There were tight spread games last year that were impacted by the ability to foul Clippers' Jordan and Howard. This might end up being worth a half point to cappers for a few games.

The NBA has adjusted its away-from-the-play foul rules in an attempt to curb the "hack-a" strategy employed against poor free throw shooting players

You couldn't do a hack-a-thing in the final 2mins anyway. It has no impact on end game scenarios, and marginal impact on power rankings.

In some games it was added 3 extra possessions for the opposing teams at a cost of one point. Not small. It also impacts these total lines. And now, you have the ability to play a Deandre Jordan in 6 more "safe minutes" meaning that if you rested him at the end of quarters you'll surely have to look at resting him at the beginning of Q1,2,3.

It's not a stop the presses change for bettors but if you have a tight spread of Clippers -1, its something to think about while spreads are built on last year's #s. Also, if last year you had a total of 191 when Clipps played the Pistons and in quarters 1-3 there were fouls on Drummond and Jordan in a game of who-gets-it-last and lets say the total landed 192 in both reg season matches.... well, you might want to look at that for the season opener at a total of 191.

It is what is wrong with todays society. When karl malone and hakeem came into the league they couldn't shoot ft. They took time to learn. todays ball players are lazy. I think it will lead to more overs

I rarely like rule changes, but this one will improve the game.

Impossible to gauge a betting effect on it.

Thats a good point. I think the question the league should be asking is why are those 4-5 terrible FT shooters on the floor? Nature should take its course and the opposing coaches should take them out...or they learn how to shoot.

The rule change is not a secret, so why would lines be built on the old rule? Sounds dubious to me.

Lines are typically set based on historical numbers and players bet and move them that way. An exception being when the overtime rules changed in NFL. That applied for every team and every tight spread. Most won't care that Jordan and 3 other guys are playing 6 minutes more where he cant be fouled off ball which, I think, offers some situational capping. Those extra possessions as the clock winds down have been game changers. We'll have to see if the lines are adjusted early and if coaches adjust their substitution patterns.
