I've only been watching for the last 5 years so I can't comment a lot. I started watching due to the fact that the ex - Donkey Don - was a fan. And I got into it all on my own from watching Tony Stewart do amazing things with cars at those speeds. Yeah, it does get boring with JJ winning all the time but the races this year have been some of the better ones I have seen since I started tuning in week after week.
And this week...no points...just money!

I'm from Bristol & had been going to NASCAR races since I was 5 or 6, and even a kid knows that movie was so unrealistic its not funny. But I like the movie as a whole when I got older, I love Robert Duvall

Hell, some of the modified racing at the local dirt track on Saturday night is better then the big boys on Sunday.

I started watching NASCAR after going to the Brickyard in 97. Since that time, I've been to countless races in Vegas, Charlotte, Indy, and Richmond. It would have been safe to say, I was a huge fan - hook line and sinker. Since I started watching, I've watched the 'sport' slowly deteriorate into a joke and a waste of time on a Sunday afternoon.
Ever since Winston (are they even still around) sold off to Nextel.. it's been a pain to watch.. I've pretty much sold off all my nascar crap, or put it in storage. I'm happy to say I have not watched a full Nascar race in 2 years, and I don't miss it.

I'd say it dipped because its been 2 or 3 guys dominating every year.I mean the last 2 years its either been Jimmy Johnson or Kyle Busch that wins.At least Hamlin threw his hat in the ring this year.If they want to get more fans they need more people to root for.Kenseth,Newman,Edwards,Stewart,Junio r,and all the others guys have to start winning.Maybe they have to do like they do in horse racing where they add weight to the stronger horses.Whatever the auto racing equivalent would be.

I've only been watching for 4 or 5 years too. And agree fully, so far this has been the best season I've watched.
Maybe we are lucky we missed the good ole days, so it's easier to appreciate 'the crap' racing we get today. ;-)

The problems with NASCAR are plenty, for me there just isn't enough wrecking anymore. The drivers are too talented for the speeds that they are going. I have other beefs as well. When watching a race, and there is no wrecking, 95% of the time, you can count on a caution for some crap on the race track. That is very annoying, having a caution to tighten up the field with no wreck. Then they made the pits safer, pit road speed has killed allot of the drama of having pitstops. Also no more names like Dick Trickle, and that means no more announcers saying shit like," Here comes Jr, Stewart, Martin, Hamlin, and Dick Trickle in the mix", or " Oh geez, there's a wreck, the Dick Trickle machine has dropped fluid all over the track." Then of course there is the not racing in the most light of rain, pussies. Also I would like to see a dirt track on the schedule, and since I am bitching here, once a year for charity, they should have the drunk driving restrictor plate race. Restrict the cars to run 100 mph, but every 20 laps the driver must come in, chug a beer, get a full pitstop while everyone is waiting for him to chug that beer, then send him back out for another 20 laps.

Not enough wrecking? I think it's too often sometimes. I do agree, however, that the debris cautions are getting too predictable.
It'd be awesome if there could be a dirt track. But what would they run and where would they run it? I don't know of many tracks that'd handle 35 (43?) 800hp bricks flying around it. Sure would be fun though.

Good article about changes coming to NASCAR on their website. Admitting the attendance problems and trying to do what they can to produce a better product. Big schedule changes in store for next season along with changes to the Chase format. I'll give em some credit for trying, although Maybe the production company should step aside and just let us enjoy raw racing like it was in the good dayz. I'm starting to feel about NASCAR as I did about the NWA and Nitro Monday's before I threw in the towel.

BY MICHAEL MAROT Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS — Jeff Belskus understands image can be everything in sports. His job: Put Indianapolis Motor Speedway back on top of the racing world in the midst of a poor economy. Three days after witnessing the smallest Brickyard 400 crowd in the race’s 17-year history, the speedway’s president and CEO told The Associated Press he intends to cut ticket prices for about 75 percent of fans at next year’s race. “I can’t deny that having as many empty seats as we had (Sunday) is a disappointment to me,” he said. “But we have a lot of people here and a lot of opportunity here to rebuild this event and bring it back. It’s going to take the full effort of everyone here at the speedway and at NASCAR.” Belskus’ immediate plan calls for tiered pricing, which will cut prices up to $20 for seats closer to the track where sight lines are not as good. The coveted higher seats will cost more. He also plans to cut general admission prices, used for the first time this year, from $40 to $30 for advance purchase, and he will retain the new policy of allowing fans 12-and-under into the infield for free with a paying adult. The changes are a major shift for a venue long on tradition and steeped in history. The track that once had the toughest ticket in town and that still bills its signature race, the Indianapolis 500, as the highest-drawing single-day sporting event in the world, is now adapting to the reality of a steady decline in attendance. Empty seats have become a regular feature of the Indy 500, and some team owners have complained track and series officials didn’t do enough to promote this year’s race. Track officials have never said how many seats the speedway holds, though estimated attendance for the 500 is traditionally 250,000 to 275,000. Formula One also saw its numbers dwindle after a tire debacle in 2005 and left Indy for good in 2007. Now, NASCAR has joined the downward trend. After drawing about 270,000 fans to the 2008 race, the year of NASCAR’s own tire fiasco, attendance dropped to an estimated 180,000 last year and 140,000 on Sunday. Race organizers point out this year’s Brickyard numbers still rank among the three highest-attended races on the Cup circuit in 2010, and it could be higher. Debatable numbers? “We had a lot of people here, and I’m telling you that when I see the graphic on whatever newscast I’m looking at that the Daytona 500 had 175,000 people there, I’d like to debate that one with anybody,” Belskus said. “I know how many seats they have. We have almost double the capacity.” But 13 months after Belskus replaced longtime track CEO Tony George, are things getting any better for one of the world’s greatest and most versatile race tracks? “Between 2008 and 2009, we saw a pretty good revenue decline here, and so far, in 2010, we’ve been steady with 2009 so I think we’ve seen a bottom here,” Belskus said before Sunday’s race. Wednesday, Belskus revised the estimate, saying revenue is now projected to be “down a tick” from last year. Even the possibility of history being made by Helio Castroneves and Chip Ganassi at the 500, and Ganassi, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon at the 400 couldn’t fill the grandstands. So Belskus and his team are still facing major challenges. Belskus implemented the 12-and-under-free policy in hopes of attracting a new generation of race fans. “I think we need to get young people into the sport,” team owner Roger Penske said last weekend. “They’re playing soccer and hockey and lacrosse and we’ve got to get kids here. My dad brought me to my first race here (Indy) in ’51, and I’m not sure if that hooked me or not. “But we’ve got to get kids here, that’s for sure.” And Belskus would consider adding a fourth race to the track schedule. The Indy 500 isn’t going anywhere, and Belskus has no doubt NASCAR will return in 2011. In fact, tickets are already being sold for the Cup race. Next month, the Indianapolis MotoGP will return to the speedway for the third time, and the two sides already are working on an extension to the three-year contract that expires this year.

I think it's too inclusive to begin with.
Maybe put the top 8 drivers in the chase, and anybody with more than 1 win. I'd be curious to see who that would put in the chase at the end of 26 this season.

I'd like to see Chase races turned into 2 race weekends. Everyone races Saturday night in a prelim, and the top 8 non-chase finishers go into the main event Sunday to make 20 starters.
