    What a crock of shit.

No. 3-ranked Furyk ineligible for Barclays; will remain in Playoffs

PARAMUS, N.J. -- Jim Furyk, ranked No. 3 in points going into the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup, is ineligible for The Barclays after oversleeping and missing his pro-am tee time Wednesday morning.
Furyk was scheduled to tee off at 7:30 a.m. ET in Wednesday's pro-am but failed to arrive on time. The pro-am was a shotgun start and Furyk was to start on the 11th hole. Marc Leishman took Furyk's spot in the pro-am group.

Jim Furyk will have to sit out The Barclays this week.

Fellow pros sympathetic Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods all weighed in on the Jim Furyk ruling. Click for story

"The rules are rules," Furyk said. "No matter what tournament it was, I'd be upset. But I'm more upset because it is this one. We are here are the end of the (Playoffs). ...
"I'm beside myself, but I have a way of climbing into stupid situations."
Slugger White, the TOUR's Vice President of Rules and Competition, said tournament officials were looking for Furyk a half-hour before his tee time. White was with Furyk's caddie, Mike "Fluff" Cowan, who said he tried to call Furyk but that the phone would not ring. White also tried to contact Furyk.
"When things like that happen, sometimes you think the worst ... worried some stuff happened on the road," White said. "Thank goodness that wasn't what it was. We kept looking and kept trying to call."
Furyk said he uses his cell phone as an alarm clock but that it had no power this morning. He woke up at 7:23 a.m. and threw on a pair of pants and a shirt, but had no belt or socks. Rushing out of the hotel, he didn't even tie his shoes.
He arrived at the locker room at 7:35 a.m. but he needed to be on the 11th tee at that time.
"The hotel had power ... but somehow my phone died," Furyk said. "I never use a backup because I just figure if the phone is charged, I'm good to go."
Furyk was scheduled to play with No. 1-ranked Ernie Els and No. 2 Steve Stricker in the first two rounds on Thursday and Friday. Tee times will not be adjusted to compensate for Furyk's DQ, according to TOUR officials. Els and Stricker are scheduled to tee off at 8:16 a.m. ET on Thursday.
TOUR policy is that any player missing a pro-am time except for injury or family emergency is ineligible to play in that week's tournament. The rule was instituted in 2004.
"It is unfortunate," White said. "Knowing Jim as I do and we all do, he handled it extremely professionally and put all of the blame on himself. ... He is a fan favorite and everybody likes him. He is a really good guy, but my hands are tied.
"I am sure he will recover quite nicely next week and jump right in there again."
Wednesday's ruling does not eliminate Furyk from the Playoffs, but it does eliminate an opportunity to solidify his spot going into the next event, the Deutsche Bank Championship held next week at TPC Boston.
According to the TOUR's Playoff scenarios, Furyk could drop as far as 19th on the points list after The Barclays, depending on how others perform this week. But the likelihood of him falling that far is remote. He will likely fall between 7th and 10th in points.
Ranking among the top five in FedExCup points is important because the top five heading into the final Playoffs event, THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola, can win the FedExCup simply by winning that event. Instead of maintaining his top-five position, Furyk will need to play catch-up.
According to Kin Lo, one of the TOUR's FedExCup experts, Furyk should at least be safe in making it to East Lake.
"Furyk currently sits at No.3 with 1,691 points," Lo said. "Last year, 1,532 points were required to advance to THE TOUR Championship -- so it's a good assumption that he'll be playing in Atlanta again this year."
But, Lo added, "To give himself a realistic chance of winning the FedExCup, he will want to work himself at least into the top 15 heading into THE TOUR Championship. Our early projection is that this will be somewhere around 2,100 points, so Furyk will need to earn an additional 400 points between the Deutsche Bank and the BMW Championship. That equates to a single ninth-place finish (400 points) or some combination equivalent to two 31sts (200 points).
"That said, the top-five players heading into THE TOUR Championship by far have the best chance at winning the FedExCup. We project it will take roughly 3,000 points to finish in the top 5 following BMW, so Furyk would need to earn about 1,300 points at Deutsche Bank and BWW to get there. That equates to a single second-place finish (1,500 points) or some combination equivalent to two fourths (675 points)."
Although Furyk said he was upset about not playing Ridgewood or the tournament, he noted that the worst part is that he "possibly, severely hurt a good year."
"I played my heart out all year," Furyk said. "I've got no one to blame but myself."
Furyk said he would return home to Florida before heading to the Deutsche Bank Championship. Furyk's children started school this week.
"I missed the first day of school," Furyk said. "I should have just stayed home."

    Oops.

Mickelson is aggressively defending how ridiculous the decision to DQ Furyk is to golf's comissioner

DQ is just too harsh, probably a penalty of 1 or 2 shots is still effective of preventing players skip the pro-am.

Although I'm surprised that he wouldn't schedule a wake up call or at least set 2 alarms considering this is his livelihood and he can't even rock up 5 minutes late, it still sucks! Mickelson makes a good point in his argument though. Everyone should face the same rules.

Even worse though is him missing his childrens' first day of school for nothing. How disappointing for him and his family.

Agree on the same rule part. But this rule has nothing to do with fair play of the game, it only exists to satisfy the big money sponsors. I think for every 5 minute late a penalty shot is definitely more appropriate.

If Furyk was only 12 minutes away from the lockerroom, why in the hell did'nt the caddie run over to his hotel room? They call his cell but not his hotel room?

The DQ rule was put in place because players were blowing off the Pro-Am.

Don't buy Furyk's excuse. When I go on a business trip and have to be at a meeting in the morning I have 3 alarms. Wake up call from the hotel, alarm clock and cell phone.

With this rule, why would a Pro play in the Pro-Am and take the chance of this happening? To me this rule gives more ammo to the pro on why he would/should not play
