Former Pirate standout Nick Schnabel has been named assistant coach and recruiting coordinator, while also serving as the infield instructor at East Carolina University according to an announcement from head baseball coach Billy Godwin Tuesday.
Prior to his appointment at ECU, Schnabel served as the hitting instructor, recruiting coordinator and third base coach at Liberty University for the past two seasons where the Flames compiled a 68-47-1 overall record that included a pair of appearances in the Big South Conference Championship game.
"Our baseball program is excited about Coach Schnabel rejoining the Pirate family," said Godwin. "With his recruiting experience, knowledge of the game, ability to develop players along with his passion and understanding of ECU's history, we believe this addition is going to help us reach our goal of playing in the College World Series in Omaha."
"I am very excited about the opportunity of returning to ECU," said Schnabel. "Coming back to Greenville and being part of the Pirate baseball family is something I have been thinking about for a while. Coach Godwin and the East Carolina program are well respected around the country and I'm thankful for the opportunity to work alongside such a great staff and help lead ECU to its first trip to Omaha."

East Carolina's Patrick Somers and Kyle Roller were recently named Players-of-the-Week for their respective leagues. Somers, the Clark Griffith League Pitcher-of-the-Week, worked 7 innings allowing 2 unearned runs on 4 hits with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks in an 8-2 win against the Vienna Senators. With the win Somers improved to 3-1 on the season and lowered his ERA to 1.49.
Roller picked up his 2nd Cape Cod League Player-of-the-Week honor after hitting 3 home runs. On the week Roller batted .348 and slugged an astronomical .739 in 7 games for the Braves. He was the catalyst for the team's run production this week, scoring 7 runs and driving in 6.
The Rockingham, N.C. native, who was named a Cape League All-Star, continues to be one of the league's most feared sluggers. He is the league's 3rd leading hitter at .333, the leading home run hitter with 9, 3rd with 26 RBI's, 1st in slugging percentage (.622) & extra-base hits (20), and 2nd in runs scored with 29.

                      ***Roller Named Cape Cod MVP***

The ECU Rising Senior Led CCBL In 6 Offensive Categories.....

East Carolina DH Kyle Roller was named Most Valuable Player of the Cape Cod Baseball League on Saturday, prior to the start of the West Divisional Championships.

Roller, a 2-time CCBL Coco Cola Player-of-the-Week selection, led the league in home runs (10), RBI (33), doubles (13), slugging percentage (.644), extra-base hits (24) and runs scored (33) and ranked second in batting (.342), hits (51) and on-base percentage (.449).

"He had a monster year," said Braves Manager Harvey Shapiro. "There's guys in the major leagues who haven't done (on the Cape) what he did. He's been locked in, and with guys on base he's been even better."

The Rockingham, N.C. native was drafted by the Oakland A's this summer but has remained unsigned thus far and continued the drive for a championship with the Bourne Braves.

In the 2-game divisional series, Roller drove in the Braves first run to cap a 3-2 come from behind win and in the series clincher he was 2-for-3 with 3 RBI and a pair of runs in the Braves 8-0 win over the Firebirds.

"Winning the award was nice, but winning the game was more important," he said after Bourne's most recent dramatic comeback. "One out in the 9th and you come back and score a couple of runs to come back, that's what baseball's all about."

The All-Star first baseman said he wasn't even aware that the league awarded an MVP until he received it. "It was a huge honor," he said after the presentation. "You come here, where the best players in the country come to play baseball every summer. To be named the MVP of that group is really amazing."

Among past winners of the Pat Sorenti MVP Award are Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria, (Chatham '05) his teammate, Carlos Peña, (Wareham '97) and Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek (Hyannis '93).

Roller along with current ECU hurler Seth Maness will take on Cotuit in the best-of-three Championship Series that is scheduled to start Tuesday, Aug. 11 at 7 p.m.
