That was the issue with 2011. There were no real standouts. Personally I would have voted for the two best horses at the moment. Frankel first and Black Caviar second. Of course this would have gotten a unkind response from DRF's Mike Watchmaker. http://www.drf.com/blogs/mike-watchmaker

I think there is a stipulation that they have to run atleast once in the US to be eligible.IMO they should put more of an emphasis on a sturdy year long campaign rather than one big time win(Musical Romance,Animal Kingdom,Stacelita)

The Eclipse Awards are for North America. In Europe , the equivalent is the Cartier Award( I think that is it). I am pretty sure that Australia also has there awards.
I agree with you Mike, that more emphasis should be put on a more sturdy campaign but the spirit of the Breeders Cup was a championship series. That works out most years but a perfect storm seemingly brewed this year in a couple of the categories.
Havre De Grace won by default . Maybe Animal Kingdom as well. I think at the end of the day, the voters want to be sure and emphasize a big name race when declaring the winner. But to use the Woodward for THIS year is pretty lame. An historic race for decades, this years version was not much to talk about . They also want to recognize greatness and finishing 2nd and 3rd is not that. Kind of a shame though. Game on Dude type horses certainly deserve something IMO. But I guess it would be like crowning the Buffalo Bills for their Super Bowl games.
