Here are my thoughts heading into scratches for this race.

            CALDER RACE COURSE
            Friday, August 15, 2008

            1st (Post time 2:55)

            6 Furlongs | Open | 3 Year Olds And Up Claiming ($16,000) | Purse: $14,000

            1) Varitek: Has never won at the distance but the rail has been solid winning over 20%. Will include in exotic tickets.

            2) Hey John: Comes into the race following a poor start from a layoff. Those who like the improve off second race angle would likely select this horse. Going to take a stand against John getting the win today and will have on exotics.

            3) Raymundo: Given an 8:5 m/l which means it'll only get pounded even more. Rightly so, this horse has always been in the money at the distance and loves the track but I'll play against him this race but have on exotics.

            4) A Song for Sarah: Last race put some conditioning into him and longshot players should have this one across the board in their triples. A large pay out could occur if this one wins.

            5) Noble Duty: Blinkers are scheduled to be used and if they are kept on, this is the horse of choice. The pp's also show a pattern I like to use. ND has won at the distance and should be placed forward enough to make a move when it counts. Will be keying in exotics as well.

            6) Dignified Essence: A 54 day layoff lowers this ones chances of winning today not to mention has never gone the distance. Under side of exotics.

            7) Lincoln's Bullet: A beaten favorite last outing makes this one a tough choice to pass on. There's enough talent based on paper that this one could win but I'm going for a larger return. Exotic material for myself.

Good luck with your selections and wagers for this race. Any scratch can and will change the body of the race, if that happens use the above at your own risk.

Although the race did not pan out how thought it would, anyone who knows the game realizes it only takes one quality score for/on a card to end up cash positive. FYI, the horse that was given top choice had the opportunity but faltered when another gear was needed. Had found it, think what the 60+:1 triple would have paid.

                Double Action Angle

This angle was originally devised for the purpose of getting a price on a fit, well-meant horse. Its one weakness, however, is that horses frequently are dropped in class or claiming price for reasons other than a trying effort next start. This being so, the handicapper is frequently hard put to determine the true meaning of this move in any given instance. In short, some horses that were dropped in class last start are well-meant today, while others are not.

This situation has made this angle most convenient for the horseman because of its uncertainty of intent. This is especially true when the horse displayed an apparent lack of sharp condition in its dropped-down race. Anyone who doubts that this device serves the horseman should study their local result charts for a week, noting how many of the really high-priced winners are horses that were moved down in class in their most recent race. Winners at prices from $30 up to as high as $90 are frequently horses that were dropped in class last start.

The point of confusion is the entered price today. Some horses that moved down last start are dropped again today; others are re-entered at the same price in the race following the initial drop.

With this in mind, the handicapper is at a loss to distinguish a well-meant horse of this type from one that has been dropped for reasons other than preparing it for a trying effort today.

A great deal of research was required in order to discover a factor which separates the well-meant horse from the horse that was dropped last start for no apparent reason.

The reader knows that a horse that was dropped in class and also showed a corresponding drop in odds was probably sent out to win. If the horse lost last out, what are the trainer's intentions today?

In researching this part of the angle, we have come upon a training tipoff which we believe reveals the trainer's intentions quite well. Not only do we consider it a positive factor for those horses that tried and missed but also for horses that remained at their own claiming level in their last two starts and which today may remain at that same level, move up in value or be dropped—it seems to make little difference.

The trainer who tried and missed knows he did not send a razor-sharp horse to the races and therefore takes a little time to fine-hone his charge for the next trip. The trainer who has been racing his horse at the same claiming level knows he has a horse that is almost ready but he, too, takes the same method of fine-tuning before he goes for the money.

The training tipoff you should look for consists of two parts, and both parts are equally important. First, the horse must have been leading or running not more than one length off the leader at the pre-stretch call of its last race. Second, the horse must show at least two workouts since is most recent try. Here are the selection rules:

                1. Horse must have been leading or running within one length of the leader at the pre-stretch call of its last race.

                2. It must have run recently, i.e. within 30 days.

                3. The horse must show two or more workouts at any distance since its last race. Time of the workouts is not important.

                      Outsmarting the Public

                      Outsmarting the Public

Many people misunderstand the basic principle of pace handicapping, and believe that the horse with the highest pace rating should win a high percentage of the races run each day. But such an assumption is based on careless thinking, or upon a lack of experience in the use of pace.

Pace ability is used merely for the purpose of discovering the pace contention in a given race. Why is this discovery important? Because it is pace ability that makes or breaks a race horse. But pace ability is based on class and current condition, and the horse with the best pace rating might be outclassed today.

For instance, the horse with the highest pace figures earned its figures in a $3,000 claiming race. If this horse is entered today in competition with $4,000 and $4,500 platers, which have slightly lower pace figures than the $3,000 horse, the cheaper animal may encounter a class handicap which sends it down to defeat-despite its higher pace figures.

Or the horse with the highest pace figures might be lacking in current condition. The horse may not have reached the upward swing of its current form cycle, or it may have reached its peak and is now on a downward curve. A horse coming off a very hard race in fast time often falls into this category.

Therefore, it is clear that the horse with the highest pace figures won't always be the logical selection. Perhaps the horse with the second highest figures-or even the horse with the third or fourth highest figures-may be a sounder selection today. In racing, there is no completely isolated factor in handicapping. Every factor is related to one another.

It is also easy to slip into the habit of using only final time as a means of figuring pace. While it is true that final time represents the overall pace picture, it is not true that final time alone is always sufficient when determining the actual pace ability of a horse.

For example, one might have two horses of the $5,000 grade whose most recent races were run in identical final times. If the final time figures are used alone, these horses might have identical figures. But when the "highlight time" method is used, the picture may take on a different hue. Examine the two following races:

                      (A) 6f $5,000

                      32 35 23 22-1/2 SR-90

                      :45.1 1:10.3

                      (B) 6f $5,000

                      11 11/2 22-1/2 22 SR-90

                      :22.1 :46 1:10.3

Since both of these races were run in identical time, both horses were defeated by the same number of lengths and earned a speed rating of 90, both horses will receive identical pace ratings if only final time and speed ratings are employed.

But when you include the "highlight time," the half-mile time in a sprint or the six-furlong time in a route, we might arrive at an entirely different picture. In the above example, both animals received a parallel pace rating of 391 plus 90, or a final rating of 481. But when we include the highlight time rating, the final result reveals that A has more early pace ability than B. Examine the following figures:

                      (A) 391 plus 394 plus 90…total 875

                      (B) 391 plus 390 plus 90…total 871

These are the ratings you will get from your Pace Calculator when using the "highlight time" method. So where we had an identical time when using only the final time and speed rating, we now have A with a four point advantage when we include the highlight time.

Since both animals earned their figures in a $5,000 race, and since they are assumed to be about equal on the condition factor, A's four point edge on early pace becomes of real importance. On the other hand, if A was outclassed or lacking in condition, the four point edge would lose most-if not all-its significance.

There is another important factor to consider in the above example. The early pace of A's race was faster than the early pace of B's race, and A gained ground after passing the half-mile pole. On a slower early pace, B lost ground after reaching the half-mile pole. When one horse gains, and the other loses ground, preference should usually be given to the gainer.

Let's take horse B and enter it in today's route race. Many players would pass this animal in a route because it quit or weakened in a sprint heat. The average player would argue that if the horse dropped back in the sprint, there is no reason to assume it will improve at a longer distance. This is poor reasoning. If B is entered today in a route-where the average half-mile pace is something like :46.4 or slower-this horse has a mighty good chance, if the class and condition are there.

When a sprinter moves into a route, it is moving into a race where the early pace will nearly always be slower than the early pace of a sprint heat. Therefore, a sprinter with a good half-mile time has an advantage over the routers with slower half-mile times. The slower early pace might give the sprinter just what it needs to score.

A study of past performance records will soon convince you that this is true. You can find many examples where a sprinter quit or weakened on a fast early pace in a sprint race, and then came right back to whip horses of the same class in a route race. This is one of the best longshot angles in racing because the public seldom gives the sprinter support when going in a route.

So far we have pointed out two pace angles: a gaining horse in a sprint where the early pace was fast; and a sprinter with a fast early pace in a sprint that is entered against its own class in a route. Both of these angles will produce some nice-priced winners.

But there is a third angle you should consider. It also involves pace, and can be used in both sprints and routes. Note how A ran his last race as shown. The horse was within two lengths of the leader at the first call, and then dropped back some three lengths by the time the field reached the half-mile pole. Then the horse began to gain ground, picking up two lengths between the half-mile pole and the stretch call, and another half-length between the stretch call and the wire.

This horse had two very strong pace angles: gaining ground off a fast early pace; and dropping back after the first call to come again after passing the half-mile call. It takes a pretty fair animal to drop back off a fast early pace and then come again to make up lengths down to the wire.

This "drop back and come again" angle is not new. But it becomes a new and more powerful angle when the pace factor is considered. The fact that a horse drops back and comes again is not overly important unless the early pace shows that it did this under fast early pace conditions. This is another reason why handicappers can't limit himself to final times.

A point worth remembering is that the return one receives for his labors is based upon his ability and his willingness to work. The lazy racing fan can't succeed. You can be sure that the more you put into this business, the more you will earn.

With Breeder's Cup just around the corner, if you're going to have action on-line make certain you're funded enough and know your books payoff limits for the various wagers. It would suck if you hit a $50,000 + ticket only to find out the book's maximum payoff is $10,000.

                                        Race 2
This race should come down to any of the following either winning or placing:
#1 Expect Validity, #4 El Tampaino and or #8 Poundcake. And as such they
will also be keyed in exotics and any or all multiple pick races.

                                        Race 3
There is only one horse worth mentioning putting any money on a and that is
#12 Jewel Basin. I don't know this track as well as others but know this trainer
has a solid history at the meet of winning and or being in the money. To me it
only makes sense to go across the board doubling as one goes.

                                        Race 5
Somewhere I read that "more 6:1 and 8:1" morning lines come in than any others.
Don't think that's true but if it is, I'm glad to be on #1 Provocative and Greeley's Kiss.
They will be played on the nose, used as keys (w/p) in exotics and where applicable
                                        in multi-pick races.

                                        Race 7
This races sets up well. It's race seven (starting point). The horses I like total ten
(ten is greater than seven) #1 Divine Wonder and #9 Hurricane Tiger. The respective
odds 5:1 and 12:1 are more than ten. Looks like they'll have w/p action as well as
being keyed in exotics and where applicable in multi-pick races.

                                        Race 8
Every card has at least one race in which the winner pays at least $20. So with that
line of thinking, going to play #2 Tootaineted and #7 Roman Valor in w/p action as
well as being keyed in exotics and where applicable in multi-pick races.

                                        Race 9
This is a "back-up plan" incase the above listing longshots fail to win. Sad part is
most likely one one of them will head to post. The horses I'll have money on are
#5 Carmelo Starbuckle and AE #14 Blue Orage. Both were given the generous
20:1 morning line and will have w/p action as well as being keyed in exotics and
                                        where applicable in multi-pick races.

                                        Race 10
Back in the day, I knew a guy who's last name was "Caton". He had a brother. Found
out last night his brother was a Deputy Sheriff. Looking over the program I see
Deputy Caton is scheduled for post today. Works for me and will have w/p action as
well as being keyed in exotics and where applicable in multi-pick races.

On a more serious note, if you got a chuckle or giggle from the listed reasons great.
Glad you have a sense of humor. For any who don't like "those" reasons, be assured
that's not really why I like them rather trying to add some laughter along the way today.
Hand on the Bible, those will be the ones I'll be wagering on shortly as listed. Good luck
                                        with your track selections.

                                                      11/ 4

I like the last three more than the first three but that doesn't mean they don't have a chance (they do). Playing them to w/p and as keys in exotics if like what's shown in the paddock and post parade.

                                                                Good afternoon DKJNR,

For the English t'breds yes to a degree. Reason for to a degree is because there rarely is any early pace - the majority of the "real" race is down around the 300 (and in) meter mark. Certain aspects transfer when capping t'breds to greyhounds and back (trainer %'s, athelete's performance at distance, etc). Haven't posted much greyhound action since over 99% of the posters don't follow it.
