ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Check Your Soul, looking to give trainer Roger Attfield a record ninth Queen’s Plate victory, has been made the 3-1 morning-line favorite and will begin from post 13 in Sunday’s $1 million, 1 1/4-mile classic for Canadian-bred 3-year-olds.
A field of 17 passed through the entry box Thursday morning, and post positions were announced at the annual Queen’s Plate breakfast, with Woodbine continuing to employ the two-tier method in which a random draw is made for order of selection and contestants then choose their own post positions.
The Queen’s Plate field is the largest since 17 horses went to the post in 1999.
Attfield, who trains Check Your Soul for owner/breeder Charles Fipke, had the fifth choice in the selection process. He and rider Patrick Husbands opted for post 13.
“I’d rather be near the outside, so Patrick can see what’s going on in the race early,” said Attfield, who also admitted to a touch of sentiment in his selection.
“I chose the 13 post for Not Bourbon, when he won the Plate in 2008,” Attfield said. (Not Bourbon actually broke from post 12 after one Queen’s Plate entrant was scratched).
Queens’platekitten, the 7-2 second choice in Woodbine oddsmaker Ernie Perri’s morning line for the Queen’s Plate, had the ninth choice of posts, and trainer Todd Pletcher, speaking by cell phone, selected post 14.
John Velazquez will ride Queen’splatekitten, who shipped in from Belmont to win the 1 1/16-mile Marine Stakes here May 21 in his most recent start.
Inglorious, the lone filly in the field and coming off a victory in the 1 1/8-mile Woodbine Oaks, had the seventh selection and went for post 9. She is listed at 9-2 on the morning line.
“I’m very, very happy with where we’ve drawn,” said trainer Josie Carroll, noting that Inglorious would be one of the last horses to load.
“She won’t be standing as long, and that’s always advantageous,” Carroll said.
Bowman’s Causeway, next in Perri’s line at 6-1, had the 15th choice, and trainer Chad Brown, speaking by cell phone from Saratoga, chose post 15 over the remaining inside or far outside slots.
Eurico Rosa da Silva, who will be seeking to become the first jockey to win three consecutive Queen’s Plates, rode Bowman’s Causeway to a second-place finish in the Plate Trial and retains the mount.
Oh Canada, coming off a third-place finish in the Marine, rounds out the morning line’s top five at 10-1 and will be ridden by Emma-Jayne Wilson for the first time.
The first choice in the selection process went to the connections of Pender Harbour, who chose the No. 5 post.
“I’m hoping he breaks, and we can get over to the rail,” trainer Mike DePaulo said. “We can save some ground, going that far.”
Pender Harbour is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Victoria Park Stakes, an open 1 1/8-mile race here June 12.
Sunday’s card also will feature two turf stakes for older horses, with a field of 10 set for the Grade 2, $200,000 Highlander at six furlongs and seven entered in the Grade 3, $150,000 Singspiel at 1 1/2 miles.

this is sundays contest and Mike put the weekend contest up early for house. We are going to Deleware monday.
