Thanks STR! Steep ugly country ..right now it's a boat ride and a 2 hour hike to the bottom of the fire for the hotshot crews..... Boy I loved being on a" hotshot crew" couldn't wait for the adventure.... now I look at that and say " it's a young person's game" and do everything I can to watch out for their safety...... sounds off but.... I work at getting a dedicated "hoist helicopter" available for them. I order Paramedics to be inserted with the crews to provide "ALS" among other things... didn't mean to go "off topic".......

Probably the most difficult part of training is not dreaming. If you stay realistic and leave the dreams to the owners, you can do well.
Trainers are human, so easier said than done but let the owners dream and the trainers train and build towards bettering the horses.
That was my philosophy and you would be blown away by some of the names of people that said that too me when I first started training and never stopped picking the winning trainers brains .
So many of them would end up saying that to me individually. It was incredible.

yeah maybe they influenced the call ..nice n2x other than at del mar would seem to be a more logical spot with the added incentive it's nice to win there ..have to think they'd have at least one of those over the course of that meet

I need to honor today , the greatest female racehorse I ever saw. Ruffian was the horse that gave me the drive to become a trainer when she ran past me as I watched from the stand, down the backstretch at the 5/8ths pole at Monmouth Park in the Sapling Stakes, a huge race for 2 yr. Old fillies back then.
Her eyes, when I saw her run by about 40 feet away from me, were like nothing I had ever seen or have seen since. When I saw her run by, I decided that moment that I would try and become a trainer and learn what it was all about.
I mention it today because it was 50 years ago this afternoon that she took that bad step and broke down at Belmont Park.
I remember refilling the water buckets around 6 pm after watching that race on a small tv in the tack room . It was after dinner at Bowie for all 48 horses. i was by then the asst. trainer for Dick Dutrow.
I cried like a baby the whole time.
A year later I had just started training horses. Gotta say I owe it all to her and the intensity of the effort she gave a year earlier when I saw her.
I’ve never seen anything like that since.
Thank you Ruffian. You were the catalyst to me becoming a trainer.

Fascinated by the adventures of the Army Mule progeny. I had never heard of him and looked up his pedigree and racing record. Only 3 starts, but 3 wins and earnings of over $300,000, quite the accomplishment for about the 2016-17 era. Will continue to watch your contributions about this stallion. Thanks so much.

There are maybe 5 of the best horses to step on a racetrack and she is among them.

no problem dogkatcher .. str and I had followed him throughout his brief racing career and starting again with his first crop of 2yo's 3 years ago .. his wins were all brilliant including his finale in the carter at aqu .. he has turned out to be an excellent sire at his price point and it's been fun seeing his progeny do so well

it was a few years before I became interested in racing (was 12) but certainly was aware it happened ..
know you have mentioned at least a few times that you saw her at monmouth and got a glimpse of the intensity in his eye .. fact it inspired you to become a trainer and her terrible fate can certainly understand you mentioning the date
