Calder Casino & Race Course’s decision to cut average daily overnight purses by 10% through the end of its 2010-2011 meet is not sitting well with the Florida Horsemen’s Benevolent and Protective Association. And Calder’s situation provides an example of how slot machines can help soften the economic problems, but not solve them, at U.S. Thoroughbred tracks. Calder began its reduction in overnight purses, from $182,000 to $165,000, on Nov. 22. In an announcement Nov. 19, the Miami Gardens, Fla., track also cancelled the $100,000 Kenny Noe Jr. Handicap (gr. III) that was scheduled for Dec. 4 and moved two other stakes from December to the first weekend of 2011. Without providing numbers, Calder’s announcement cited “lower than expected handle trends over the past four weeks” as the reason for the changes. A Blood-Horse review of Equibase Co. charts shows Calder’s average daily all-sources handle was about $1.74 million during the last of those weeks. John Marshall, Calder vice president of racing and general manager, said Nov. 20 that Calder made the purse and stakes changes to prevent a possible 2010 overpayment in its purse account. He said that Calder and its parent Churchill Downs Inc. have a policy of releasing handle figures only in quarterly reports to the Securities and Exchange Commission.Comment -

Jockeys Gracia, Bermudez involved in Aqueduct spill
Jockey Jason Gracia is being treated for a concussion and kept overnight in the Intensive Care Unit at Jamaica Hospital after a spill in the 3RD race at Aqueduct on Saturday, 11/27/2010.
Jockey Jose Bermudez, also involved in the spill, is undergoing testing at North Shore Medical Center after complaining of rib soreness.
In the race, a New York state-bred maiden special weight going 1 1/16 miles on the turf, Ryan and Jack (Manlove), trained by Pat Kelly, stumbled and fell on the far turn, causing Gracia, 28, to land on the turf. October Dreams (Legion Field), trained by Cleveland Johnson, collided with Ryan and Jack as he was on the ground, unseating Bermudez, 41.
October Dreams, a three-year-old gelding, appeared to be uninjured, while Ryan and Jack, a four-year-old gelding, suffered a skull fracture and had to be euthanized.Comment -

Las Vegas-based Pinnacle Entertainment confirmed Nov. 26 it has a deal to purchase River Downs near Cincinnati, Ohio, for $45 million. The sale is expected to close in the first quarter of 2011, officials with the casino company said. River Downs will become the company’s first racetrack acquisition. The Blood-Horse reported Oct. 21 the track had been sold to Pinnacle, but officials on either side of the deal wouldn’t comment. During an Oct. 28 conference call on earnings, Pinnacle officials said they planned to expand their holdings but again wouldn’t confirm the River Downs purchase. “The proposed acquisition of River Downs is consistent with our strategy to thoughtfully deploy our solid balance sheet for return-focused growth opportunities,” Pinnacle president and chief executive officer Anthony Sanfilippo said in a statement. “The transaction positions Pinnacle to benefit from the possible legalization of video lottery terminals at Ohio’s racetracks and, with the facility’s metropolitan Cincinnati location, we believe River Downs offers an excellent complement to our nearby Belterra Casino Resort in Indiana, while also further diversifying our operating base. “River Downs has enjoyed a rich heritage in the heart of the horse racing community in Ohio and along the Kentucky border. We look forward to building on this heritage and enhancing the operations of the facility. If VLTs are allowed in Ohio, Pinnacle will revitalize River Downs as a unique gaming entertainment destination in Cincinnati, which will drive the creation of new full-time jobs while generating new tax revenue for the state and local community.Comment -

Horse Racing is fun to handicap but as I read someone say when you handicap that takes the price away and I'll add then your a survivor. Best finding another pastime as it appears the younger crowd is doing. Never when I go do I see anymore than 20 people and they are all the same faces, the racetrack is a business and is far from bankruptcy. Take a look at the daily handles...........Comment -

I have been around the standardbreds for 45 plus years....never an owner, but know many owners and trainers. A lot less years with the King of Sports..the thoroughbreads... probably 30 years or so......Seen some Great ones in both.
Yes I will wager on a few now and then......but over the years I have learned one most important thing...these fine animals have feelings, hurts, and pains just like us. Some days they are a "go" and other days they are ho hum.
Plus there is the human interaction element which is a whole book of nightmares.
The only way to double you bankroll in this betting game is to take your money, fold it in half and put it in your wallet. At least the thickness will be doubled.
Just remember, this is entertaiment for the general public. The owners, trainers, breeders, etc it is a business..and a difficult one at that.
Best of Luck to you.

State officials threatened to close the New York City Off-Track Betting Corp. as early as next month, creating "chaos" and costing the racing industry thousands of jobs. The threat came 24 hours before the state legislature was set to return to Albany for a special session Nov. 29, 2010 that includes a bailout bill for NYCOTB, which is in Chapter 9 bankruptcy. The measure is facing an uphill climb in the legislature, which is getting pushback from a number of other state OTB corporations, racino operators, horsemen, and other racing interests. Some state lawmakers have privately said they have no interest in taking up the major changes to NYCOTB just a month before Gov. David Paterson leaves office and Andrew Cuomo becomes governor. They have also heard NYCOTB shutdown threats at least three times in the past five years. But Paterson administration officials say the bailout measure cannot wait until January. "It’s just a financial and legal fact of life that if we don’t get this kind of relief, the corporation is going to have no other choice but to shut down," said Larry Schwartz, the NYCOTB chairman who also serves as Paterson’s chief of staff.Comment -

Zenyatta to make public appearance in Keeneland paddock
Jerry and Ann Moss' two-time champion ZENYATTA will make a special appearance in the Keeneland paddock on December 6, 2010 shortly after her arrival in the Bluegrass to begin her new career as a broodmare.
Zenyatta is scheduled to arrive in Lexington, Kentucky, at approximately 3:45 p.m. (EST) on that date. She will then board a van to Keeneland and will be paraded in the paddock at approximately 4:15 p.m.
The public is invited to see her before she is then vanned to her new home at Mr. and Mrs. William S. Farish's Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Kentucky.
In the future, fans wanting to see Zenyatta will need to check her website at zenyatta.com, or at lanesend.com, to see what her schedule might be while she is preparing for her life as a broodmare.
According to Zenyatta's website, exercise rider Steve Willard and groom Mario Espinoza will accompany the six-year-old superstar on the plane, while the Mosses, trainer John Shirreffs and his wife, racing manager Dottie Ingordo-Shirreffs, will be on hand in Lexington for her arrival.
Purchased by David Ingordo on behalf of the Mosses at the 2005 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Zenyatta has been based throughout her stellar racing career at Hollywood Park.
The Inglewood, California, track will hold a farewell ceremony in her honor Sunday, the day prior to her departure for Kentucky.
A perfect 19-for-19 leading up to her near-miss to Blame in the November 6 Breeders' Cup Classic (G1) at Churchill Downs, Zenyatta set North American female records in earnings, $7,304,580, and with an extraordinary 13 Grade 1 wins. #60Churchill Fall Meet ends with tribute to Mine That Bird
Mine That Bird is reunited with exercise rider Charlie Figueroa as he takes his last stroll beneath the Twin Spires (Reed Palmer Photography/Churchill Downs)
The curtain dropped on the Churchill Downs Fall Meet on Sunday, November 28, 2010 with a farewell salute to 2009 Kentucky Derby (G1) winner MINE THAT BIRD, who is heading home to New Mexico after retiring from his career on the track. Fittingly, the meet's last race was run in the glow of the historic track's new permanent lights after a 21-day meet highlighted by the return of the Breeders' Cup and its unforgettable under-the-lights Classic (G1) showdown between BLAME and ZENYATTA, a host of spectacular performances by equine and human athletes and the introduction of "Downs After Dark" night racing for the first time during a Fall Meet at the legendary home of the Kentucky Derby
Co-owners Dr. Leonard Blach and Mark Allen were joined by trainer Chip Woolley and exercise rider Charlie Figueroa, who traveled from New Mexico for a ceremony in the regular winner's circle following Sunday's 7TH race in which fans provided warm applause and affection for Mine That Bird, the tiny gelding who shocked the sports world when he won Derby 135 under jockey Calvin Borel at odds of 50-1 -- the second-biggest upset in the history of America's greatest race.
Churchill Downs presented Mine That Bird with a special blanket bearing the official event logo of his Kentucky Derby, and track President Kevin Flanery presented the Derby winner a basket filled with apples, peppermints and equine treats and toys for his van ride back to New Mexico and a post-racetrack life in retirement at Allen's Double Eagle Ranch.Comment -

#61Jockey Gracia Sustains Multiple Fractures
By Blood-Horse Staff

Posted: Sunday, November 28, 2010 11:35 AM
Jockey Jason Gracia is listed in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit at Jamaica Hospital Nov. 28, according to his agent, Jorge Velasquez, after a spill the preceding day in the third race at Aqueduct Racetrack.
Velasquez said that Gracia suffered fractures ribs, a broken collarbone, and a hairline fracture of his neck. He is to undergo a further evaluation, the agent said.
Jockey Jose Bermudez, also involved in the spill, said that he was released from North Shore Medical Center with bruised ribs, and that he expects to be sidelined at least one week.
In the race, a New York state-bred maiden special weight at 1 1/16 miles on the turf, Ryan and Jack, trained by Pat Kelly, stumbled and fell on the far turn, causing Gracia, 28, to crash to the turf. October Dreams, trained by Cleveland Johnson, collided with Ryan and Jack as he was on the ground, unseating Bermudez, 41.

#62MJC Plan Rejected; Laurel, Pimlico in Limbo
By Tom LaMarra
Updated: Monday, November 29, 2010 7:36 PM
Posted: Monday, November 29, 2010 7:25 PM
Thoroughbred racing in Maryland for 2011 is in limbo after the Maryland Racing Commission Nov. 29 rejected a stop-gap plan submitted by the Maryland Jockey Club and also rejected owner MI Developments’ plan to sell 49% of the MJC to Penn National Gaming Inc.
The situation threatens full-card simulcasts in Maryland in 2011 because they are tied to live racing dates and horsemen’s approval. Laurel Park is approved for live racing through the end of December.
Also, the third Saturday in May in Maryland is reserved for the Preakness Stakes (gr. I), second leg of the Triple Crown, at Pimlico Race Course. The track, however, has no dates for 2011 at this time, leaving the Preakness in jeopardy
------
“Maryland racing is now owned by a dysfunctional entity that can’t make decisions,” Foreman said. “We’re not going to stand for it anymore. (The MJC plan) was totally unacceptable to horsemen. They understand they may be shut out, but there has never been a greater show of unanimity.”
The MJC devised the Laurel closure plan in October pending the result of a November election in Anne Arundel County, where the track is located, as to zoning for a slot machine parlor at the nearby Arundel Mills Mall. Voters backed the mall plan, dooming slots at Laurel unless changes in the original slots law are made.
Laurel had the fast track for a slots parlor but lost its chance when Magna Entertainment Corp., later purchased by MID, failed to submit a license fee with its application.
PNGI earlier this year announced plans to purchase 49% of the MJC. The Pennsylvania-based company operates the only slots parlor in Maryland and two racetrack casinos in neighboring Pennsylvania and West Virginia.
The MJC is next scheduled to meet Dec. 21. Foreman said that’s too late for horsemen to decide whether to stay in Maryland or leave the state to race elsewhere in 2011. About 1,500 racehorses call Maryland home.
Nothing, Foreman said, will be decided on dates until a decision is made on the ownership of Laurel and Pimlico, as well as the Bowie Training Center.Comment -

#64IMO .. Casinos and Racinos are the FAST payoff and excitement of the younger generation....You sit down put a few bucks down, hit a button, and within 30 seconds you know if you have won or lost....NO HANDICAPPING, or THINKING process involved.. ( heck, I don't think that 10 % of these players can add a column of figures without a calculator, but that is another issue. )
I have always contended that if they depend on casinos (or racinos)to help any industry keep going, they are mistaking very badly. You cannot have a full blown casino ( or racino ) at or near every horse race track. There just is not enough money in the public's pockets to go around.. Something has to be left out. Right now it is the horse racing industry ..because of the thinking process that is involved on the bettor's end.........Owners and trainers end.. VERY hard work with long hours for little gain, except for enjoyment in doing the work.
The State(s) involved have got to stop getting their greedy hands into the industry...start cutting the horse racing industry some slack.
Just think what would happen if the NYS would pay to the horse racing tracks in NYS $3 Million .....JUST LIKE THEY PAY THE BUFFALO BILLS to keep them in NY.
The State does that because the BILLS provide jobs in the area.........WELL horse race tracks provide jobs in the area they are located in.
Got to go to work so the State can take money from me to do something with it.
Have a Good Day.Comment -

A plan to reorganize the money-losing New York City Off-Track Betting Corp. failed to pass the state legislature Nov. 29—a move aides to the governor said will force its shutdown in the coming month. The state Senate left town without considering the bill, which saw growing opposition in recent days from some racetracks, other OTB corporations, and horsemen’s groups. Lawmakers said threats to close NYCOTB—which officials said would cost thousands of jobs in the industry—have come and gone before over the past couple years. But Larry Schwartz, NYCOTB chairman and chief of staff to Gov. David Paterson, reiterated his threat shortly before the Senate left without considering the bill that the corporation will run out of money in the coming weeks and can’t remain open. Schwartz said pink slips to NYCOTB employees will have to be issued without final passage of the reorganization plan. The Assembly late Nov. 29 was still considering the measure, though it can't become law without the Senate’s approval. The Senate left town, though there was some talk of coming back to Albany in mid-December to take up a number of unresolved issues. Aseembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said his chamber was set to pass the NYCOTB reorganization bill Nov. 29-30. He said the bill will be waiting for the Senate to consider if members return to the statehouse in December. "The Senate says they will come back. I believe they should come back," Silver said. Silver said the NYCOTB bill "avoids state obligations in the future by doing it now." He said it also calls for several hundred layoffs but preserves about 700 current NYCOTB jobs. "Absent that, basically the place just closes," Silver said.Comment -
