Are young handicappers inclined to bet frontrunning speed horses over pace?

speed does rule these days.... I don't think betting speed is the wrong way these days. I think the probably for these 'young' guys is they are betting speed that folds, cheap speed.. I also noticed inexperienced handicappers will bet cheap speed in a race with multiple speed horses.. just a recipe for disaster

Yeah you really gotta handicap with the shape of the race in mind.If there is only one speed horse who can get out and control the pace then speed is the way to go but if there are multiple speed horses where the pace is gonna be contested then closers are the way to go.All the info you need is in the past performance.Just look at where they usually are at 1st call,if they are constantly 1st or 2nd then you can count on them going to the front.On the turf alot has to do with the temporary rail being placed out 15-20 feet or more when this happens it favors closers tremendously but if there is no temp rail its all about speed.

Racing from day to day is all about what ,if any, the surface favors that particular day, and the pace of the race. If you can make the lead and walk the dog,I would bet speed every time. Looks like a duel up front,position or closer is the call.

If you just show up at the track without doing any homework its hard to lay off that "speed on the lead". HaHa. That was me about 20+ years ago. And, after all, those horses win a lot. Even cheap speed can win if the pace horses get in trouble. It took a while for me to learn about pace and how a race sets up. It took a little longer to realize a lot of that cheap speed is not even well intentioned. Just setting up the pace for someone else. Of course if you stick around long enough you learn all of this or, you don't stick around.

i was over at harrahs chester last friday, and there was a horse at Belmont, in a 6 furlong turf race, winemeister or something like that 5 in front on the far turn at 33-1, kid about 22 or so, screaming and yelling for him, of course he went 22, 44.1 so everyone knew he was dead, guy was yelling the whole stretch as the horse ended up last beaten about 20 lengths..

I always bet for those in pace, not just front runners...Yeah, speed kills but moves or tactics always wins...

In an 8 horse race let's say, if the speed is the 8 as well as anyone of equal speed inside ,the outside horse has a very solid advantage as long as the track is playing fair from the rail out.
Reason for that is that most if not all speed horses do NOT want any horse on even terms with there right eye.If the horses go head and head and both horses are somewhat equal in talent, the inside horse will give way to the outside horse almost every time.Try to explain it to people like if you are a new driver and a big truck rolls up next to you and the guard rail ,most have a tendency to pull out of that uncomfortable spot where as if the truck backs off,driving quickly becomes more comfortable.
One great speed capping angle is to find a speed horse that has dueled from an inside position and faltered in his last several starts and this time he is sprinting from the outside post.Horse usually performs much better and stays much longer with the outside post.
It is what is called the controlling speed in the race,meaning when the outside steps on the gas,the inside must do the same or get in that tight spot they are uncomfortable being in.
Great angle . Just wanted to explain why if you or anyone did not already know.
