I was just looking at this race....
what follows is simply my $0.02...plus I have been drinking and got nothing better to do while my kids are watching Bolt.
1 Jeronimo (6-1) 13 days ago this horse won convincingly while absolutely exploding around the final turn into the stretch. if you haven't seen the replay of his race on Jan. 13, its worth finding. The stretch to a 1 1/8 mile is what worries me, but this is one you may have to watch out for here.
2 Unusual Suspect (30-1) This horse is definitely used to running the distance unfortunately it isn't used to winning. Hasn't shown the late speed to win this race since last spring. At one point this horse was a contender in this race, but it wasn't anytime in recent history. Should be at the back of the pack most of the time. Hasn't raced in 3 months, the layoff may be just what the guys needs but I don't think so.
3 Enriched (6-1) Finished second to Compari on the turf in its last race, but was never really able to pull himself out of the pack. The last couple of races has finished in the money, but I don't see that happening here today. May spend some time near the front early, but won't stay there long.
4. Palladio (30-1) Watch out for this longshot! Won his last race convincingly pulling away from the field at a similar distance. Add Mike Smith on the saddle along with a nice workout and you got yourself "a live bomb" as JoeyP would put it. I really like the horse, if the pace can cooperate this horse could be contending late. I really like the Show bet here but I think this guy could make a run for it.
5. Unusual Smoke (30-1) Probably the least likely in the group, I don't see this horse ever seeing the front of the pack, I don't see this horse ever seeing the middle of the pack.
6. Bad Action (20-1) Ran second in his last race but I am not sure this horse has the speed to really become a factor in this race.
7. The Usual QT (5-2) The Morning Line favorite has won 6 in a row. All right around this distance, one interesting note is that he hasn't done it very decidingly in most of the races. Had a great workout leading up to the race today and keeps the same jockey. Its his race to lose.
8. Compari (3-1) This is the horse that will lead most of the race. Compari will jump out front and will hold the lead throughout the race. Looked really strong in the last outing running wire to wire and never really being threatened and was pulling away in the 6.5 Furlong race. My only concern is the distance, if the pace is too strong Compari may not be able to hold on.
9. Bold Chieftian (6-1) Another horse in the race who just isn't special. Average speed is well below what its going to take to win this race. He could be in contention to hit the board, but I don't think he threatens the winners circle.
10. Wicked Style (10-1) Another horse I find intriguing. Interestingly I think this horse may be the key to this race, although I don't think he has a chance to win. But if Wicked Style can jump out with Compari and push the pace he could pull some of the pressers (Palladio) back into the picture.
11. Acclamation (10-1) Hasn't won in a while, and has failed as the favorite last race. I don't see much special and popping here. Another middle of the line horse that shouldn't be a threat.
BGboothA's Pick
Tough here, I think it comes down to 4 horses. But really its going to be the 7 The Usual QT thats going to decide the race. Its going to be tough for anyone to dethrone a horse going for its 7th straight win, but if the pace can be right I think the 1 Jeronimo or the longshot 4 Palladio have a legit chance to cash in. Not sure what my bets will be until a lot closer to post. But thoughts right now would include....
4 Palladio SHOW
7 The Usual QT WPS (but only if you can get 2-1 or better which I don't forsee happenning)
1 Jeronimo WPS (Really I think this is the best chance at upsetting QT, I am interested at seeing what the post time line is on this one.)
For my pick3 and pick4 and DD that include this way I will almost have to include all three of those horses.
Good luck.
