thought this was not a bad example of keying a longshot in 3rd (that's where she finished at 49-1)..in this race the 5-2 favorite won..there were 6 horses between 5-1 and 11-1and rounded off literally one at each odds level..completely logical strategy to key the clear favoriteon top and in 2nd with the next 6 horses and mine in 3rd of course.. $24 with those 6 horses gets you back a $1006 triple..in this case triple was only about a 10% overlay..the exacta was more than a 50% overlay at $50..when you have a clear favorite and the next lowest odds horses are clustered together this is the way I'd play it

since you had a horse keyed in 2 spots (1st/3rd)
(2nd/3rd) think it's reasonable to only go 4 deep vs 6 deep with the other horses..you only need 1 of those 4 to come in 1st or 2nd ..as it happened a 5-1 came in 2nd.. understand it's easy to say after the fact but 4 deep coverage in the open spot pretty solid overall.. 3 would be pushing your luck in this situation imo
