    Shoot Out Technique.
After watching CLB look awful in the shootout, I'm convinced that a slow approach to the net completely takes away the advantage of the shooter. So, I thought I'd throw it out there for discussion.

    Hey Keyboarding...

Speaking of slow...I remember when Jason Allison was ending his career as a Leaf and they punched his ticket for the shootout. I could have gone to the fridge uncapped a beer and made a sandwich between the time he collected the puck at center ice to the actual 'deke'...if you could call it that.

Dekes don't work at slower speeds (unless you're super-slick like a Mario Lemieux), because it allows the goalie the option of a poke check....but...if you come in with speed and the goalie tries to poke check...well...let's just say the goalie gets a good chance of getting 'posterized'. A shot has a chance at slow speed has chance if the shooter can really pick the corners...

Both options are better with at least some speed. Speed forces the goalie into quicker lateral movement and leaves them vulnerable to not being 'squared up' to the shooter. Also...many of the good shootout artists are looking to see if a lateral move from the goalie opens up the 'five hole', giving them an additional target.

Some guys are shooters (Heatley), some guys are dekers (Jussi Jokinen) and some are both...I don't see either being better or worse. I'm always surprised that some of the top scorers (like Heatley) aren't great at shootouts.

    Cheers,

Good points. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't crazy. It seems any team I bet on that goes to shootout will use the slow approach and drive me absolutely ****ing crazy, because it rarely works.

If my team goes to a shootout I want guys that can deke. The key to a shootout is forcing the goaltender to move laterally. Thats why if you watch a best shootout goals compilation many of the goals are backhanders. The shooter shows forehand, gets the goalie to bite, then dekes to backhand. Guys like Crosby, Ovie, and Mike Ribiero are all great at this and they have added elements to their moves to get the tender to flinch quicker like Crosby's leg kick. And other guys have moves they pull all the time, like Ales Kotalik, who shows forehand and goes backhand. The bottom line though is shootouts come down to the keepers. Brodeur and Lunqvist have the most shootout wins, not because their forwards carry them but because they're better than the oponent's goalie.
