    Oil Can Boyd.
Most of you never heard of the guy. It just came to mind.

Edmonton is +120 tonight and I'm giving it a shot. Don't think they will be shut out again.

    E. Bouchard played the worst game I ever saw played so far this playoff season. Maybe all time. I counted at least 6 times he tried to pass and gave the puck away. He could not have been worse. Even though switching back and forth with the Baseball game, he screwed up almost every time I saw him touch the puck. It was brutal.

Oil Can I saw him pitch at Fenway few games back in the day. He was a character and decent pitcher at times.

I remember his heyday back in 1986; still pissed off at their choke against the Mets even though I don't pull for either team.

Re: post 6, I asked him a little about this. There was a rainout b4 Game 7.

Boyd was scheduled to start Game 7. Because of the rainout, Bruce Hurst got the start. Dan Shaughnessy from the Boston Globe reported that Hurst had effectively shut it down for the season after his previous start. His glove was still in Fenway, so the team had to deliver his glove to Shea to make the emergency start.

Wow, that is an amazing piece of journalism. Oil Can is truly different kind of guy. Props to him on his individuality.

I understand why he would be mad that McNamara gave the ball to Hurst. I'll counter with a strategic reason why starting Hurst was the right decision. The '86 Mets were more vulnerable to LHP. Hurst had already beaten the Mets twice in the series.

Go down the lineup. The Met lineup was designed to beat RHP. They were not as strong vs LHP:
*Strawberry had very big splits vs LHP/RHP.
*Wally Backman gave way to Tim Teufel vs LHP. Backman was very good vs RHP, not good vs LHP.
*When you start a LHP, you have to decide between Lenny Dykstra, Mookie Wilson, and Kevin Mitchell. One of them (maybe Dykstra) goes to the bench.
*And their top pinch-hitter (Danny Heep) is not effective vs LHP.

Can can be mad. But any manager gives the ball to Hurst there.

Hurst pitched 5 shutout innings in Game 7, then finally got hit in the bottom of the sixth up 3-0. McNamara had no plan on what he was doing in that game for when Hurst got tired as expected, not unlike the rest of the series.

Boyd would have gotten rocked. He started Game 6 in the ALCS against Anaheim two days after Boston's miraculous comeback in Game 5 to extend the series. With all the momentum, Boyd proceeded to nearly implode in the first inning of Game 6, giving up two runs and barely escaping a huge inning before the Red Sox quickly got the runs back.

If McManara was more tactful he would have told Can/Hurst "We're gonna start Bruce, we like the matchup versus the Met lineup. Can, be ready to go in relief. If it's a close game, we're gonna need you."
