It's called Scorecasting...written by a couple of academics in the Freakonomics genre...people like it, though it doesn't sound like the authors detail their methodology. Anybody read it?

from what the amazon description says, this book is going to be totally useless for sports betting
it looks like it just reports what any good sports bettor knows: coaches make dumb decisions all the time, and often know they are making dumb decisions. they do not gamble enough on 4th downs. they do not gamble in situations where there is no other choice because it could lead to them losing by even more (embarrassing). of course embarrassment should not be a factor in coaching decisions, you should only be maximizing probability of winning. the use of closers in baseball typically does not make any sense mathematically. and the whole idea of streakyness having any useful meaning is of course bullshit that no self respecting bettor ever considers. If teams DIDNT go on streaks it would be incredibly bizarre.
