    That varies according to several different reasons. Some books can have a square bettor put down a lot of money and the line won't move at all. Why should they if they have the square guy on what they perceive is the wrong side. However, a sharp bettor can put down considerably less and move the line 1/2 point.

    It also depends on where the line is. It takes a lot more to move a line from -3 to -2 1/2 than it does to move a line from -5 to -4 1/2. In fact, it may not take any money at all to move the latter. A book may just wish to balance out their money more evenly so they move the line to take more bets on one side.

        And to address OP, betting line movements after they've moved is just random. Betting them before they finish moving is profitable if you get in early enough. But best of all: be a part of the line movement origination.
