    anyone have handicapping checklist
I have a handicapping checklist of things a person must check before they bet on a game. Feel free to add to the list.

    1. power ratings

    2. yards per point or total points between the 2 teams

    3. injuries

    4. weather

    5. spread

    For NHL:

    1) Starting Goalies
    2) Team rosters / injuries
    3) Strength of recent schedule
    4) Teams' SOG, PP%, PK%
    5) Rest: If on a roadtrip, how long is the trip and what # game are they on. If at home, how long have they been there.

    Football

    In addition to yours:
    1) Offensive/Defensive matchup for passing and rushing, looking for mismatch between Off/Def in the air or on the ground between opponents. I feel like a prediction on whether the game will be played more on the ground or in the air gives me a better overall feel for the matchup.

                My Pre-Game Check List
                (1) Weather: Bad weather tends to hurt a team with limited talent. Inclement weather cuases teams to alter some of their preparation, i. e., www.weather.com
                (2) Coaching: Good coaches get beat, but they seldom beat themselves.
                (3) Artificial Vs. Natural Playing Surfaces: Does the game involve a change in surface for either team and and how they perform on that surface?
                (4) How important is the game to each of the individual teams? Is it a “must win” for either team to keep them in playoff completion or either team have any other hidden agenda? Is this a must win for either team?
                (5) Who did each team play last week -- Was it a tough game?
                (6) Who does each team play next week—Will it be a tough game?
                (7) Is there an obvious mismatch or a weakness in the match?
                (8) The Bounce Factor: Teams playing far above or far below its potential one weekend will most likely reverse the following week.
                (9) What is the records against the Las Vegas Line?
                (10) Bet on teams playing well --Against teams playing poorly.
                (11) The “Hot Dog” Factor: A team that plays well when it feels like it and lays down when it does not.
                (12) The Jinx Factor: Some teams and some coaches just can't beat the other.
                (13) Are either team on a winning or losing streak?
                (14) Are these streaks straight up or against the spread?
                (15) Is either team on a streak vs. the total, i.e., have they been involved in a number of consecutive games that have either gone over or under the posted total?
                (16) How is each team doing at home and on the road?
                (17) How have they done vs. each other, both recently and historically?
                (18) How have they done versus the same class of opponent in the recent past?
                (19) How have they done vs. the spread or in a certain role, that either as a favorite or underdog, a home favorite, a road underdog, or what have you?
                (20) How have I done personally when wagering on games involving these particular teams?
                (21) Does public perception play a part in setting the line on either or both of the teams,i.e., is one of the teams a public or a name brand team that attracts a lot of betting action?
                (22) Has the line maker been correct in his evaluation of the teams?
                (23) Have there been line move involving these particular teams and have they been right or wrong?
                (24) Have the power ratings been accurate as regards to these particular teams or have they needed constant revision as teams follow one erratic performance with another?
                (25) Will scheduling be in any way a factor? Are the teams coming off Monday night encounter a, Thursday game, a bye week, a particular tough stretch vs. divisional opponents or strong contending teams, a number of consecutive road games, a revenge game, or an easy stretch versus soft opposition?
                (26) Is this a revenge game?
                (27) Are there any significant injuries, how do they figure to effect the game, and can they be compensated for?
                (28) Have injuries been accounted for in the pointspread, have they been overlooked, or have they been vervalued?
                (29) Are the injuries a matter of public knowledge?
                (30) Are either or both teams rising or dropping in class, that is, is either one facing a level of competition significantly above or significantly below what they've faced in recent weeks?
                (31) In the area of offense and defense match-ups is one team clearly superior on either side of the ball so that (a) they figure to be able to score or (b) they figure to be able to keep the other team from scoring? i.e., Iskoe's spreadsheet 'X-Factor”
                (32) Did I put special emphasis on the defense side of the ball? Not only can a strong defense unit score points itself via interception and fumble returns but week in and week out defense is the most consistent consistent factor in the equation.

The ghost has hit the nail on the head. All of those items on his check list must be considered. In the bowl games, you can eliminate #'s 5 and 6, but the rest should have some degree of importance in your wagering choices. You can also add "wagering with your head, not your heart" onto that list. For the bowl season, #30, class raises or drops can be very important.

Just check wit me ,only kidding, excellent points, I would include, heart. If your betting and the team is waiting for the season to end forget it ,my team must go on the field with the intentions they are going to drop some blood ,and every play needs 100 percent, Look at the gam a few years ago N orleans first gam back from the flood they could have been playingthe 85 or 86 bears and New Orleans wasn't looosing the average team when they are detemined to win can beat anyone if there ares are in it. Good luck fellow hadicappers and if I am using my money the team better be playing to win.
