I know the big books and Vegas shops have people monitoring and adjusting lines, but how do they get passed on to smaller books? The online sites refresh every minute or so. Are the getting an RSS or XML feed or such - if so from whom and how much do they pay for it? Also how do the casino games work? Are they shared jackpots between books? And horseracing, too?

#2A lot of smaller books just clone lines from a bigger book and follow DonBest or another line service. When DB reports a line change, the smaller book moves their lines.Comment -

#3Once Pinny, Cris start moving the smaller books follow. That's why most have a rule against steam betting. If you beat them to the line move they are not happy.Comment -

#4I understand play on line moves. Also I figured out about the second part of my original post - the smaller offshore books are not pari-mutual and therefore don't pay track odds past 10-1 or whatever. I thought the smaller books were followibg as well and obviously if there is a big move they have to adjust to chase away the middlers (they call it arb around here???) But there are too many lines and they update too quickly - sometiimes 10 or 15 at a time, so it can't just be because they follow the bigger books and update them manually. It's got to be automated somehow - so somebody has to be providing the data for the update. Is it that Los Vegas Consultants group that sets Vegas lines? I heard a rumor that the smaller books pay ~$5K a month, but that's just a rumor. Maybe they just store le lines as a table in the database that holds the players action and a script runs every 30 seconds or so that acceses a remote database and updates the local one?Comment -

#5Don Best line service updates line moves to the second, $400 a month I think. All the off-shore small books use it. But yes I see these small books change VERY fast sometimes that it seems to be automated.Comment -

#6I've only been around for a little while but I've gotten this feeling as well. I don't have a Pinnacle account but sometimes I feel like I do with some books that follow their moves mere seconds after Pinny moves.Comment -

#10I used to book, I started with the opening line & would move it 1-2 times a day however the big guys moved. Thing about being a local is you get very little action until 11:00 Sat morn. I would then move the lines according to the action I was taking. If in ten minutes I was taking $800 on the fav & $150 on the dog I would move it up graduallyComment -
