    NBA Scoring?? $$ 1st/2nd Half
i posted this in NBA forum i think i can post it here too its kind of an interesting problem but i dont know the solution sorry if i am dumb please help

i am looking at scoring over the last few years and it looks pretty weird to me. can someone explain to me why 1st half scores and 2nd half scores were identical four years ago, then for two years significantly more points were scored in first half, and last year it changed once again?? is this a rule change????

    2008-2009 season:
    avg. 1st half points - 99.7
avg. 2nd half points (inc. OT) - 99.8

    2009-2010 season:
    avg. 1st half points - 101.9
avg. 2nd half points (inc. OT)- 97.3

    2010-2011 season:
    avg. 1st half points - 100.4
avg. 2nd half points (inc. OT)- 96.6

    2011-2012 season:
    avg. 1st half points - 96.4
avg. 2nd half points (inc. OT) - 95.2

You can't really infer much from a sample of that size. Might just be random variation. Have you got data for pre 2008-2009 seasons?

What percent of games went into OT each year?

Another thing to look at is the average age of active players on a team.

I think this is random...I have lines and score-by-quarters and a lot more bacl to the 1981-82 season and I don't think it would take me too long to run these numbers, but I am not sure I need to as I really believe this is random and I also believe Justin7 could have the reason and it could be as simple as one season having a lot more OT games than other seasons...

This is related with team tactic/strategy. Coaches changes, Player changes..One team may be a run+n+gun team one season but they can become a more defensive team after 1-2 years. Some teams score more points in 1st half. These stats will change every year.

well, for what its worth when i look at points scored per quarter of half in NFL or NCAAF the points are remarkably consistent and those sports also have OT.

justin dont think your OT suggestion is right answer. here are games that went to OT for diff years, 61, 72, 72, 79, 68
