Yep lots of interest in Bumgarner and Will Smith. Will be interesting to see what they can get for those two guys because right now I think those two are the most valuable pitchers on the trade block.

The Dodgers announced today that they’ve activated Corey Seager from the injured list and optioned first baseman/outfielder Matt Beaty to Triple-A Oklahoma City. Seager, 25, will ultimately miss just under a month due to a strained left hamstring. He’ll now rejoin a Dodgers roster that recently welcomed David Freese back from the injured list and is set to get A.J. Pollock back as well. Los Angeles still has a 13.5 game lead on the second-place Diamondbacks and will likely be in an all-the-more commanding position with several key players back to full strength. However, the L.A. front office still has some work to do in the three weeks leading up to the trade deadline. Here’s a look at the latest chatter on the Dodgers…
        • The Dodgers have “varying levels of interest in multiple Giants relievers,” writes MLB.com’s Jon Morosi. Unsurprisingly, Los Angeles harbor some degree of interest in each of Will Smith, Sam Dyson, Tony Watson and Reyes Moronta. That quartet likely appeals to the majority of contending clubs throughout the game, though, and there’s no indication within Morosi’s report that there are any substantive talks between the two sides. The Dodgers are loath to part with any of their top four prospects for a rental reliever, making Gavin Lux, Dustin May, Keibert Ruiz and their own Will Smith unlikely to change hands in any type of deal for one of San Francisco’s short-term assets.
        • If the recent comments from Pirates GM Neal Huntington didn’t sufficiently quash the Dodgers/Felipe Vazquez connection, Morosi writes that Pittsburgh would require “at least two” of the four aforementioned top prospects (Lux, May, Smith, Ruiz) to headline a Vazquez deal. Between that and Huntington’s declaration that the team’s “expectation and anticipation is that Felipe will be closing out playoff games, be it this year or in the future with us,” it doesn’t seem wise to bank on Vazquez landing in Los Angeles (or anywhere else, for that matter).
        • In a more high-level look at the Dodgers’ trade needs, Ken Gurnick of MLB.com points out that the Andrew Friedman-led Dodgers have not been a team that has been willing to deal away its very best prospects, making a high-profile acquisition of Smith, Brad Hand, Vazquez, etc. less likely than some trades to more affordably acquire some second-tier relievers on the market. He suggests that a reunion with Watson or Blue Jays righty Daniel Hudson is more plausible than a marquee splash. (To be clear, those are speculative examples listed by Gurnick rather than specific trades that the Dodgers are actively pursuing.)
        • Hyun-Jin Ryu’s gamble on accepting the qualifying offer made by the Dodgers could prove one of the wisest decisions of the offseason, writes Jorge Castillo of the L.A. Times, who notes that Ryu is now positioned to cash in on a major contract (without the burden of draft compensation, as players can only receive one qualifying offer in their careers). Indeed, over his past 191 1/3 regular-season innings, Ryu has a 1.83 ERA with 8.8 K/9, 1.2 BB/9, 0.89 HR/9 and a 48.6 percent ground-ball rate. More broadly, Castillo’s column is a terrific look at the long road that Ryu took from intriguing high-school prospect coveted by the Dodgers and Twins to 2019 All-Star Game starter. Dodgers fans who have not previously familiarized themselves with Ryu’s path to stardom in the United States will want to be sure to give the story a read-through.

nice article on my man Tatis:

No one in MLB is more fun to watch than Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. Which made us wonder: Who wore the crown before he came around?

absolutely no doubt about it...I am a Padres fan but don't think I'm being biased at all here..I have been watching the Padres and baseball games for ~35 years and have never seen a talented athlete like this coupled with the high baseball IQ and insane instincts. He will make numerous more all star games but MLB dropped the ball bigtime not putting this kid in the spotlight.

Ortiz has third surgery after complications

Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz underwent a third surgery earlier this week because of complications from the gunshot wound he suffered last month in the Dominican Republic.
Ortiz's wife, Tiffany, announced the latest surgery in a statement released Thursday by the Red Sox. She did not disclose details about the complications but said Ortiz is "recovering well and in good spirits."
Ortiz, 43, is still recovering at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after being shot on June 9 in Santo Domingo. Doctors in the Dominican Republic removed his gallbladder and part of his intestine before he was flown to Boston in an air ambulance sent by the Red Sox.
Once in Boston, Ortiz underwent a second surgery on June 10. This week's operation was performed by Dr. David King at Massachusetts General.

Man it would be cool if the Astros added Madison Bumgarner. They were talking about the Astros potentially adding a starting pitcher at the deadline during tonights game and the Astros would be one of the places I'd like to see him wind up.

Injured Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland started a rehab assignment at the Triple-A level on Thursday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Moreland, who has been out for several weeks, may be in for a somewhat “lengthy” stint in the minors as he works his way back to the bigs, per Cotillo.
Moreland got off to a fine start this season, slashing .225/.316/.543 (116 wRC+) with 13 home runs and an eye-opening .318 ISO in 174 plate appearances, but multiple ailments have derailed his year since late May. The 33-year-old landed on the 10-day IL with a lower back strain May 29, and though he made a quick return, Moreland went back to the shelf June 8 after suffering a right quad strain.
The lefty-hitting Moreland and righty Steve Pearce opened the season in a timeshare at first base for the Red Sox. Pearce has been down since June 1, though, and knee troubles will prevent him from returning in the near future. The long-term absences of Moreland and Pearce have left first almost exclusively to Michael Chavis, who has enjoyed a respectable rookie year. Chavis had been Boston’s primary second baseman before the injuries to its first basemen. Brock Holt and Marco Hernandez have offered good production there in Chavis’ stead, so it’s unclear how the club will divvy up playing time between first and the keystone once Moreland returns.
Moreland’s comeback figures to have negative consequences for either the optionable Hernandez or veteran infielder Eduardo Nunez, who Cotillo suggests could become a DFA candidate at that point. Although the Red Sox would owe Nunez the balance of his $4MM salary in getting rid of him, he hasn’t justified a roster spot this season. A .233/.249/.313 line (40 wRC+) in 170 PA has relegated Nunez to a bench role.

Disagree, not a NYY yahoo homer by any stretch but they have a stacked lineup, a stacked bench, terrific bullpen, and enough starting pitching. Boston might make a run but have a big defect to overcome, and I don’t think TBR can keep it up.

Yanks arent going anywhere. Bats are just too potent 1-9.

If I am the Astros, Im going after Matt Boyd of the Tigers. Guy upped his punchouts in a big way, and he is a horse. Keeps the pitch count low enough to go deeper into games. Most importantly hes younger than MadBum, who I think is washed, and has a nice contract.

I feel like the Yankees have too many guys that strikeout to continue advancing in the playoffs. The Astros are my pick to come out of the American league and i think the same thing will happen to the Yankees as last season.

Bregman takes grounder to chin, requires stitches

ARLINGTON, Texas -- All-Star infielder Alex Bregman left Houston's game at Texas on Thursday night after a ground ball bounced up and hit him on the chin.

Manager AJ Hinch said during an in-game interview on the ESPN broadcast that it looked like Bregman's chin was split open. Hinch said Bregman wanted to stay in the game, but the team got him out to get checked by a doctor.

Bregman was playing shortstop, and shifted toward the middle of the infield in the third inning when he went to field a grounder hit by Shin-Soo Choo. The ball took a late high hop and caught Bregman squarely on the lower half of his face, and there appeared to be blood when he was tended to by a trainer.

The Astros later characterized the injury as a chin laceration. Hinch said Bregman needed four stitches.

Bregman is Houston's primary third baseman, but he has been playing shortstop with Carlos Correa on the injured list.

Myles Straw replaced Bregman at shortstop. The Astros lost 5-0.

How relevant are those types of stats, previous years, different teams....but when it stands out more than normal, I do give credence to such things.
