#1438The Braves received a scare tonight when left-hander Max Fried was struck on his left hand/forearm by a comeback liner off the bat of Alex Verdugo. Fried attempted a pair of warmup tosses with a trainer on the mound following the play but exited the game rather than continuing forward. Thankfully, the initial x-rays on the young lefty came back negative, as J.P Hoornstra of the Southern California News Group tweets. Fried has been diagnosed with a contusion and is considered day-to-day for the time being.
It’s excellent news considering that even after being charged with four runs in an inning of work tonight — one of which scored after he left the game and another two of which came home on a play that could’ve been ruled an error — Fried is sporting a 2.97 ERA with 7.8 K/9, 1.8 BB/9 and a 52.6 percent ground-ball rate in 39 1/3 innings of work.
Here’s a bit more on the Braves…
- The Braves will discuss the possibility of utilizing left-hander Sean Newcomb as a reliever moving forward, manager Brian Snitker told reporters Tuesday (link via Gabe Burns of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution). Snitker specifically praised Newcomb’s aggressiveness in a recent relief outing that saw him toss a pair of scoreless innings, though for now it seems clear that the discussion is in its early stages. Newcomb voiced a willingness to pitch in that role if it’s what the organization deemed best, noting as well that the decision isn’t really up to him. The 25-year-old was one of the Braves’ best starters for much of the 2018 campaign before slumping through much of the season’s second half. Atlanta’s pitching staff has been in a state of flux all season after a quiet winter in terms of pitching additions.
- There’s still no timeline for Darren O’Day’s return to a big league mound, writes David O’Brien of The Athletic as part of a larger look at the Braves’ bullpen (subscription required). The organization is hopeful that the veteran righty, acquired in last July’s trade for Kevin Gausman, will finally make his Braves debut at some point this summer, but to this point there’s nothing more concrete than that vague target. O’Day was sidelined with a hamstring injury at the time of that trade and was included in the swap largely because of the remaining money on his contract, though the Braves surely hoped he’d be an option for them in 2019. Instead, he’s been sidelined to this point by a forearm strain that appears to be progressing slowly. The 36-year-old had a terrific 2012-17 run with the Orioles and had a 3.60 ERA with a 27-to-4 K/BB ratio through 20 innings prior to last season’s injury. He’s earning $9MM in 2019 — the final season of a four-year, $31MM contract.

#1445Cubs' Russell recalled after abuse suspension
The Chicago Cubs have recalled Addison Russell, who will start at second base and bat eighth Wednesday night against the Miami Marlins. It will be his first game since Sept. 19.
Russell, 25, was suspended 40 games in September for violating the league's domestic abuse policy after an investigation into allegations of emotional, verbal and physical abuse made by his ex-wife, Melisa Reidy.
In 130 games last season, Russell hit .250 with 51 runs scored and 38 RBIs. Russell played 12 games at Triple-A Iowa before the recall,
The Cubs said they have been monitoring Russell's mandated counseling and are calling his return to the Cubs a "conditional second chance."
The move comes as Ben Zobrist takes an indefinite leave of absence for personal reasons.
The Cubs also placed reliever Pedro Strop on the injured list with a Grade 2 left hamstring strain and activated left-handed reliever Mike Montgomery.
batting .222 with three home runs and 13 RBIs.Comment -

#1451It’s been a rough 24 hours for the Rays’ catching tandem, as Michael Perez was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right oblique tightness while Mike Zunino exited Wednesday’s game due to a tight left quadriceps. Tampa Bay had recalled Nick Ciuffo from Triple-A Durham prior to the game, so he was able to step in for Zunino late in today’s game.
But, as Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times points out, Zunino, Perez and Ciuffo are the only three catchers on the Rays’ 40-man roster. With Perez out and Zunino ailing, there’s little in the way of depth on which to call. And, if Zunino ultimately proves to require a stint on the injured list, the situation will be exacerbated, even if only for a short period of time. Topkin suggests that 29-year-old Anthony Bemboom could be added to the 40-man roster if a need arises, but he’s only played eight games in the minors this year since returning from his own injury.
In terms of readily available help outside the organization, there simply isn’t much available. While veteran catchers Travis d’Arnaud, Drew Butera and Jesus Sucre all lost their roster spots recently, none is available on the open market or waivers. The Dodgers signed d’Arnaud after he was released by the Mets, while both Butera (Rockies) and Sucre (Orioles) accepted outright assignments with the clubs that designated them for assignment. Tampa Bay is as active as nearly any club on the trade market, so perhaps they’d swing a deal for a short-term veteran stopgap should Zunino require an absence of any note.
The Rays are off on Thursday, and Zunino will undergo further testing tomorrow with the hope that he won’t need to miss much (or any) time. If he needs to sit out for even a few games, it seems likely the Rays will have a 40-man roster move in the works in the near future.Comment -

#1457Giants' Posey to concussion list, Pomeranz to IL
The San Francisco Giants placed catcher Buster Posey on the seven-day concussion list and left-hander Drew Pomeranz on the 10-day injured list with a left lat strain on Thursday.
Catcher Aramis Garcia and right-hander Tyler Beede were recalled from Triple-A Sacramento in corresponding moves.
Posey, 32, a six-time All-Star and former National League MVP, is hitting .245 with two home runs and 13 RBIs this season.
Posey told reporters on Thursday that he suffered his concussion when a foul tip went off his mask in the Giants' game against the Cincinnati Reds on Sunday. He said his symptoms are similar to those he felt in 2017, the last time he went on the concussion list.
He started games on Monday and Tuesday of this week against the Colorado Rockies. San Francisco's game on Wednesday against the Rockies was postponed due to rain.
Pomeranz, 30, is 1-4 with a 5.93 ERA in seven starts this season, his first with the Giants. He lasted only 1⅔ innings and gave up seven runs in his last start on Monday.
Bochy told reporters that Pomeranz likely will miss just one start with his injury. Bochy said Pomeranz left the team on Thursday so he could be with his former Boston Red Sox teammates at the White House where the club is being honored for their World Series championshipComment -

#1463- Jed Lowrie’s official Mets debut will wait a few more days, as the infielder will play in more minor league rehab games through the weekend rather than be activated off the injured list on Friday. (Mike Puma of the New York Post was among those to report the news.) Lowrie has yet to play this season due to a capsule strain in his left knee, though his extended rehab stint isn’t due to any sort of health setback, but rather simply the fact that the Mets want to give the veteran infielder more time to get ready. Lowrie missed almost all of Spring Training due to the injury, and he has only two hits in 25 plate appearances during the six rehab games he has already played. The 35-year-old Lowrie signed a two-year, $20MM contract with New York as a free agent over the offseason.
- With Lowrie’s return delayed, the Mets will get a bit of extra time to figure out a bit of a roster crunch situation. As MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo writes, demoting either J.D. Davis or Dominic Smith would cost the Mets a productive player, though Davis could at least benefit from playing every day as a left fielder at Triple-A. If not Davis or Smith, the team could also designate veteran Adeiny Hechavarria for assignment, though that would leave the shortstop position thin behind Amed Rosario. Lowrie has a lot of shortstop experience, of course, though he has played only two games at the position since the start of the 2016 season. DiComo doesn’t think that Keon Broxton (who is out of options) is a candidate for DFA limbo when Lowrie joins the 25-man roster.
- Todd Frazier also won’t be moved to make room for Lowrie, as a source tells Newsday’s Tim Healey. With just a .143/.160/.265 slash line through 50 plate appearances, Frazier has yet to get on track following his own Spring Training injury, an oblique strain that kept him out of action until April 22. The injury continued a frustrating stretch for Frazier since joining the Mets, as he was hoping to rebound from a subpar 2018 season. New York’s crowded infield will likely lead to less playing time for Frazier, who is cognizant of the situation but still confident that he can regain some of his old form. “I don’t know if this will be my last year with the Mets. I know I’m a free agent after this year, so I want to put my best foot forward and make an impact on this team again,” Frazier said. The 33-year-old is still owed roughly $7.2MM of his $9MM salary for the 2019 season, making him an expensive cut if the Mets decided to part ways with him entirely.
- In other Mets news from earlier today, Steven Matz was placed on the 10-day injured list due to radial nerve discomfort.

#1467Rays reinstate OF Meadows for return vs. Yanks
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The Tampa Bay Rays reinstated outfielder Austin Meadows on Friday from the 10-day injured list for the start of a three-game series against the New York Yankees.
The Rays also placed catcher Mike Zunino on the 10-day IL with a left quadriceps strain that happened in the eighth inning of Wednesday's 3-2, 13-inning loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Meadows sprained his right thumb when he awkwardly slid into third base on a two-run triple in the seventh inning of a 6-5 loss to the Boston Red Sox on April 20. The 24-year-old right fielder was hitting .351 with six homers and 19 RBIs in 20 games at the time of the injury.
American League East-leading Tampa Bay began Friday with a 23-13 record and a 1½-game advantage over the Yankees.
Tampa Bay also selected the contract of catcher Anthony Bemboom and recalled reliever Casey Sadler from Triple-A Durham. Infielder/outfielder Andrew Velazquez was optioned to Durham.Comment -
