Reds lefty Alex Wood, who’s dealt with back spasms since he arrived for Spring Training in late February, “didn’t respond well” after his latest bullpen session, reports manager David Bell (via MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon). Wood, who was acquired in an offseason trade that also sent Yasiel Puig and Matt Kemp from Los Angeles to Cincinnati, will likely seek a second opinion on the creaky back, placing his eventual Reds debut in even further doubt. Thanks to stellar early-season performances from Luis Castillo, Sonny Gray, and Tyler Mahle, among others, Cincy’s starting five leads the NL in nearly every rotation category, doubly impressive when given the puny dimensions of Great American Ballpark. Still, it’s a unit that should both anticipate heavy regression and yearn for the return of Wood, whose recent-year track record stands apart from each of his potential rotation mates.
The latest on a few other NL franchises…
    • The Brewers and Mets were the teams most connected to Gio Gonzalez in the rumor mill before the lefty agreed to sign with Milwaukee on Thursday. Gonzalez confirmed Saturday that the Mets were indeed the other club pursuing him, per Tom Haudricourt of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. “The Mets were in there but they have such a great rotation. The Brewers met my expectations and needs,” Gonzalez said. “Either way, it was a win-win for me. Two great teams were coming at you. It came down to wants and needs with Milwaukee. I played with them last year so I had the feel for what they’re trying to do.” While Gonzalez lauded the Mets’ rotation, he nonetheless may have been an upgrade for New York. The Mets have been running out the much-maligned Jason Vargas as their fifth starter, after all, yet they only viewed Gonzalez as a marginal-at-best upgrade over him, Mike Puma of the New York Post tweeted this week. Their bearishness on Gonzalez helped pave the way for the 33-year-old to rejoin the Brewers, with whom he performed well after they acquired him from Washington last August. Now, Gonzalez will slot back into a Brewers rotation that entered Saturday with the NL’s worst ERA (5.77). His first outing of the year will come Sunday against – you guessed it – the Mets.
    • Banged-up Pirates outfielders Corey Dickerson and Lonnie Chisenhall aren’t recovering as hoped. Dickerson felt tightness in his strained right shoulder while throwing from 110 feet Saturday, and Chisenhall’s now dealing with left calf tightness that has forced the team to stop his rehab assignment, according to Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. It’s a new issue this year for Chisenhall, who started the season on the IL because of a broken hand. However, it’s all the more troubling because Chisenhall – then with the Indians – missed large chunks of the previous two seasons because of calf problems in both legs.
    • The Braves have placed reliever Jesse Biddle on the IL with a right thigh bruise and right calf strain, Mark Bowman of MLB.com writes. Atlanta recalled righty Shane Carle in a corresponding move. The IL placement continues a difficult stretch for Biddle, who, as Bowman notes, has retired just 10 of the last 23 batters he gone against. The southpaw faced four batters in a loss to the Rockies on Friday and failed to retire any of them, though one reached on an error, and yielded four runs (one earned) on three hits. Biddle has still notched a solid 3.18 ERA in 11 1/3 innings this year, but he has also walked upward of seven hitters per nine and seen his swinging-strike rate plummet from 10.4 percent in 2018 to 6.8 this season.

Trevor Story of the Colorado Rockies hitting .407 in his past 7 games, with 6 RBI, 2 HR, 2 SB, 2 K, 3 BB

This recent streak brought up his season batting average, now at .300 with 19 RBI, 7 HR, 6 SB, 32 K, 9 BB

Easy to see why he strikesout a lot, his stance and unwinds himself into the swing

few prominent National Leaguers departed their teams’ games with injuries on Sunday. Here’s the latest on that group:
            • Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich exited the club’s loss to the Mets with lower back discomfort, Sarah Langs of MLB.com writes. Fortunately for the slumping Brew Crew, manager Craig Counsell suggested that Yelich will steer clear of the injured list. The reigning NL MVP is enjoying another transcendent season thus far, having slashed a video game-like .353/.460/.804 with a major league-leading 14 home runs over 124 plate appearances.
            • On the other side of Sunday’s Milwaukee-New York matchup, the Mets lost second baseman Robinson Cano after he took an 88 mph Gio Gonzalez fastball off his left hand. An X-ray on Cano came back negative, but the Mets are “still a little concerned,” manager Mickey Callaway told Anthony DiComo of MLB.com and other reporters. Cano will undergo an MRI on Monday. In the meantime, the Mets will hope this doesn’t prove to be another serious injury for Cano, whose OPS has climbed from .551 to .754 over the past two weeks. Cano suffered a fractured right hand on a hit by pitch when he was with the Mariners last year.
            • Padres rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. had to leave the team’s loss to the Nationals with a hamstring injury, but it seems the shortstop will avoid an IL stint. Tatis will miss “a few days” at most, sources tell the San Diego Union-Tribune’s Kevin Acee, who reports the 20-year-old could even play Monday. The Padres will know more then about the status of Tatis, who, just 27 games into his career, has already emerged as one of the up-and-coming franchise’s best players. The early NL Rookie of the Year candidate has slashed .300/.360/.550 with six homers and six steals in 111 PA.

brutal day for the Padres yesterday...blow a 6-0 lead and Tatis Jr injured his hamstring in extra innings...it looked pretty bad in real time but I've read that he might only miss a few games thankfully but you never know with hamstrings.

Not sure if it was posted, but The Yankees reported that Giancarlo Stanton just had a setback and wont return from the IL as planned. His original biceps injury was healed but he is now experiencing shoulder soreness. Unbelievable season for them so far injury wise.

Padres' Tatis Jr. exits in 10th with hammy injury

WASHINGTON -- San Diego rookie shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. left Sunday's game against the Washington Nationals after he did an awkward-looking split while trying to stretch for a throw at second base.

Tatis was unable to keep his foot on the bag on the play. He moved around gingerly while umpires reviewed the play but could not continue.

Padres manager Andy Green said after the Padres' 7-6 11-inning loss that Tatis suffered a hamstring injury. Green said it was uncertain how much time, if any, Tatis Jr. would miss with his injury.

"I think everyone saw what happened on the field,'' Green said. "So we are hoping he is OK. We'll find out in time here. He seems in pretty good spirits right now. We'll find out how severe, how mild it is here very shortly.''

The 20-year-old entered the season as one of the top prospects in baseball. He is hitting .300 with six homers and 13 RBIs for the Padres. The son of former major leaguer Fernando Tatis had a career-high three hits on Sunday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Chatwood fuels Cubs with 2B off childhood friend

PHOENIX -- Perhaps Chicago Cubs pitcher Tyler Chatwood knew what was coming from his good friend when he doubled off Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Matt Andriese to start a 15th-inning rally in the Cubs' wild win over Arizona on Sunday.

The game was tied 3-3 until Ben Zobrist drove home Chatwood not long after the righty reliever notched his fourth career double off a groomsman from his wedding.

"I've played with Matty since I was 7 or 8," a smiling Chatwood said after his key hit against a pitcher he grew up with in Redlands, California, sparked the 6-5 victory. "He was in my wedding, so I've known him for a while."

Naturally the Giants cool off the Dodgers in game 1 of their 3 game set. One thing you can count on is no matter how bad either of these teams gets they always seem to give each other trouble.

Tigers prospect Mize throws no-hitter in AA debut

ALTOONA, Pa. -- Detroit Tigers top prospect Casey Mize pitched a no-hitter for the Erie Seawolves in his Double-A debut on Monday.
Mize, the top overall pick in last year's MLB draft, faced one batter over the minimum and needed just 98 pitches to shut down the Altoona Curve, a Pittsburgh Pirates affiliate. He hit the first batter of the game but went on to strike out seven and walk one.

"Dominant," manager Mike Rabelo said. "No deep counts. The only blemish was a hit-by-pitch and a walk. He was absolutely electric tonight.''
Erie won the game 1-0. Mize credited catcher Jake Rogers and his fielders afterward. Outfielder Derek Hill, a first-round pick in 2014, made a diving catch in the third inning, and right fielder Jose Azocar made a sliding catch in the fifth.

"It was definitely one of those days where, I don't know, it just felt like auto pilot,'' Mize said. "I've said that before. So it was just a good day.''
Mize was called for a pitch-clock violation early in the ninth inning but shook off the automatic ball. He retired Pirates prospect Jared Oliva on a popup to second base to complete the gem. Erie never had anybody throwing in the bullpen.
It was Mize's first no-hitter as a pro. Last year, he threw a no-hitter for Auburn against Northeastern.

The Nationals have announced a trio of roster moves. The club has selected the contract of southpaw Dan Jennings, creating 40-man roster space by designating righty Austin Adams for assignment and clearing an active roster spot by placing third baseman Anthony Rendon on the 10-day injured list with an elbow contusion.
While the Nats had resisted a move on Rendon, their best player, he wasn’t healing quite fast enough from a recent hit-by-pitch and the roster pressure proved too great. His placement is retroactive to April 27, meaning he’ll be eligible to return as soon as May 7.
Jennings, who recently inked a minors deal with the D.C. organization, will try to help steady one of the game’s shakiest middle-relief units. The 32-year-old has long been a steady hurler, with a 2.96 ERA over 344 frames in the past seven seasons.
As for Adams, who’s closing in on his 28th birthday, he has seen minimal opportunities in the majors over the past three seasons. It’s interesting that the club didn’t give him a lengthier audition given the volume of strikeouts he has racked up at Triple-A. After averaging 15.2 K/9 against 3.9 BB/9 in 46 1/3 frames last year with the Nats’ top affiliate, Adams has racked up a 20:3 K/BB ratio in an even ten frames so far in 2019.

Jays probably going to trade Smoak, Stroman, and Sanchez to get some pieces in Vlad's age range to build around.

2:18pm: This move is now official, with Tatis being diagnosed with a hamstring strain of as-yet-unannounced severity. Righty Phil Maton is heading onto the active roster for the time being.
12:46pm: The Padres expect to place phenom Fernando Tatis Jr. on the 10-day injured list, according to MLB.com’s AJ Cassavell (via Twitter). He’s dealing with a hamstring issue, the full severity of which isn’t yet known.
The San Diego organization is obviously interesting in keeping Tatis in the lineup as much as possible, having opened him on the MLB roster rather than keeping him down for a few weeks to keep him shy of a full year of service. But that same consideration also counsels in favor of caution. Rather than risk a more significant hammy issue, the club will evidently put Tatis on ice for a bit.
It doesn’t seem as if there’s much concern that Tatis has suffered a serious injury, though he’s still awaiting a full examination. The plans in his absence will likely involve Manny Machado sliding to short and Ty France getting some extra time at the hot corner.
San Diego already needed to clear an active roster spot to add Cal Quantrill for a start on Wednesday. It’ll still need to open 40-man space for him, perhaps by shifting another player to the 60-day IL.
