Manager Alex Cora said the surgery went well, and the Red Sox said in a statement that Eovaldi "is expected to make a full return to pitching within six weeks."Comment -

#1270- The Red Sox brought up top pitching prospect Darwinzon Hernandez for his first taste of the majors, with Alex Speier of the Boston Globe first reporting the move. Hernandez, a 22-year-old from Venezuela, still needs to iron out his command but has shown some impressive swing-and-miss capabilities. It was on display tonight, as he allowed five baserunners but also racked up four strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings in relief.
- Left-handed pitching prospect Justus Sheffield will join the Mariners on Friday for his first action with his new club, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports on Twitter. He’s expected to piggyback with Yusei Kikuchi for a start; it’s possible he’ll be dropped back to Triple-A thereafter, though that’s not yet clear. While he already has 13 days of MLB service on his odometer, Sheffield won’t be able to reach a full year of service even if he stakes a permanent claim to a big-league roster spot. Sheffield hasn’t been himself thus far at Triple-A, carrying an 11:14 K/BB ratio through 18 1/3 innings.
- It’s possible the Reds will soon welcome top prospect Nick Senzel to the majors. As Fletcher Page of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports, Senzel is back in the lineup at Triple-A after recovering from a sprained ankle. There’s no guarantee that he’ll be promoted in the near-term, but the organization doesn’t have much cause to hesitate at this point. Senzel can no longer achieve a full year of MLB service in 2019; the club is sitting at five games under .500 and can’t wait long to make its move. Once Senzel gets his timing down and gets comfortable in the outfield — he’s lined up in center field tonight for Louisville — he’ll likely be called up.
- The Blue Jays got some unwelcome news on exciting infield prospect Bo Bichette. Robert Murray and Ken Rosenthal of the Athletic first reported on Twitter that Bichette had suffered a broken hand. As Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.ca tweets, the fracture was to the second metacarpal of his left hand. Widely considered one of the game’s very best prospects, Bichette will now need to get back to health before he can begin pressing for a major-league promotion. Meanwhile, anticipation grows that teammate Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will soon get the call; Eric Longenhagen of Fangraphs tweets that some around the game anticipate it’ll come this week.
- Top Athletics prospect Jesus Luzardo is beginning to work back toward the hill, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports (Twitter links). He’s moving from 75 feet to 90 feet tomorrow, so it’s still rather early in his progression back from shoulder soreness. Slusser estimates that it could take four to six weeks before the prized southpaw could be ready for game action. In all likelihood, he won’t be seen as a candidate for a MLB promotion until he has at least a few Triple-A starts under his belt and the club feels confident there aren’t any lingering issues with the joint.

#1276Touted Jays prospect Bichette has broken hand
TORONTO -- Toronto Blue Jays prospect Bo Bichette broke a bone in his left hand while playing for Triple-A Buffalo.
The 21-year-old was hurt in the third inning Monday when hit by a pitch from Syracuse Mets left-hander Hector Santiago.
X-rays showed a fracture of the second metacarpal, the Blue Jays said Tuesday. Bichette will visit a hand specialist to determine further treatment.
A shortstop, Bichette hit .417 with four homers and five RBIs in 18 spring training games. He was batting .250 with one home run and eight RBIs in 14 games with Buffalo.
The son of former big leaguer Dante Bichette, Bo Bichette is considered Toronto's No. 2 prospect behind Vladimir Guerrero Jr.Comment -

#1278SAN DIEGO -- Right-hander Anderson Espinoza underwent his second Tommy John surgery on Monday, a crushing blow for the one-time Padres top prospect, who hasn't pitched since 2016, but worked his way back from the first surgery to join big league camp this spring.
The 21-year-old Espinoza first tore his ulnar collateral ligament in 2017, and he missed the entirety of that season and the next one. The team’s No. 13 prospect, Espinoza had fully recovered and took part in big league Spring Training this year (though he didn’t face hitters).
Espinoza then tore his UCL again while pitching in an extended spring training game against the White Sox earlier this month. He underwent the surgery in Dallas.
"For him, personally, it's so tough," GM A.J. Preller said. "He put a ton of time and effort into it. ... He just wants to get on the mound and pitch. In Spring Training, he's out there throwing with velocity, throwing free and easy. Before he even pitches in a game -- that's a tough blow for him. But he's handled it as well as a young person could handle it."
Preller also offered updates on two other injured pitching prospects. Right-hander Pedro Avila will be shut down for at least two weeks with an elbow sprain, but the team is optimistic his injury isn't nearly as serious.
Lefty Adrian Morejon, meanwhile, was removed from his start on Monday with tightness in his back and shoulder. Morejon, the team’s No. 7 prospect, will be evaluated Wednesday. The extent of his injury isn't clear.
"Whether one's related to the other, we'll find out more tomorrow," Preller said.
Even with the best farm system in baseball, the spate of injuries is a setback for the Padres, who have relied heavily on their organizational pitching depth as they build toward contention.
The Padres acquired Espinoza in July 2016 in the trade that sent left-hander Drew Pomeranz to Boston. Then 18, Espinoza spent half a season at Class A Fort Wayne before he tore his UCL for the first time the following spring.
After the first surgery, there was speculation as to whether Espinoza would be better served to transition into a bullpen role. That seems even likelier now. Espinoza's fastball routinely hits the upper 90s, and he boasts a solid curveball, too.
But that's a conversation for another day. Espinoza has another long road back.
"For a young kid, who's that good and that talented, you just want to see him out there doing what he loves to do," Preller said.Comment -

#1285The Rangers will turn to one of the most promising arms in their system to start tomorrow’s game, as they announced Wednesday that lefty Taylor Hearn will be recalled from Triple-A Nashville to make his MLB debut tomorrow. Right-hander Wei-Chieh Huang will be optioned to Triple-A to open a spot on the active roster.
Hearn, 24, has been a key piece in a pair of notable trades. Originally drafted by the Nationals in the fifth round back in 2015, Hearn was flipped to the Pirates as part of the 2016 Mark Melancon trade and then traded a second time to the Rangers in last summer’s Keone Kela swap. He currently ranks as the Rangers’ No. 9 prospect at Fangraphs, No. 11 at MLB.com and No. 7 at Baseball America. Scouting reports on Hearn tout a plus fastball that sits 93-96 mph and tops out at 98 mph, as well as a pair of above-average secondary offerings (changeup, curveball). Control and durability are the biggest questions surrounding the southpaw.
Thus far in 2019, Hearn has a 4.05 ERA with a 26-to-10 K/BB ratio and a 28.9 percent grounder rate through 20 innings of work. Missing bats in the minors has never been an issue for Hearn, as evidenced by his career 10.5 K/9 mark. Though he’s a fly-ball pitcher, home runs have never been a substantial problem for Hearn. Maintaining that stinginess (0.8 HR/9) will be a tall task but all the more important given the homer-friendly confines of his home park in Arlington.
It’s not yet clear whether this’ll be a one-off promotion for Hearn or if he’ll be given the opportunity to earn a longer-term look if he impresses tomorrow. Hearn had been expected to start tonight for Nashville, but a short outing from Rule 5 pick Kyle Dowdy earlier today forced Thursday’s scheduled starter, Adrian Sampson, into relief action for the Rangers. Texas is already without Edinson Volquez and Drew Smyly, each of whom is on the injured list, so there does appear to be room in the rotation for Hearn if he can show well in his debut against the Mariners.Comment -

#1291Yankees acquire Maybin in trade with Indians
The New York Yankees acquired Cameron Maybin from the Cleveland Indians on Thursday in a trade that adds depth to their injury-ravaged outfield.
Cleveland received cash considerations in the trade.
The Yankees officially announced the deal hours after Clint Frazier became the team's latest outfielder to be placed on the injured list.
Frazier, who has a left ankle sprain, joins outfielders Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Hicks on the 10-day IL.
Maybin signed a minor league deal with the Indians last month after being released by the San Francisco Giants. He was arrested during spring training and charged with two DUI offenses -- driving while impaired and driving with a blood alcohol content of .08 or more.
Maybin, 32, split last season between the Miami Marlins and Seattle Mariners, batting .249 with four home runs.Comment -

#1294Can’t remember the last time the Giants had a homestand like the one that starts tomorrow with the Yanks for 3 followed by the Dodgers for 3. Tomorrow will be interesting to see what the crowd is like because Bumgarner is pitching on the same night the Sharks open their 2nd round series at home and the Warriors try to close out the Clippers in LA.Comment
