#1158Per mlb.com’s transaction page, the Rockies have signed OF Craig Gentry to a minor league deal. The 35-year-old outfielder was signed by the Giants in mid-February, but ostensibly had been released at some point near the end of Spring Training. Gentry’s already reported to Triple-A Albuquerque, where he went 2 for 5 in last night’s 10-3 defeat at the hands of Tacoma.
Gentry remains one of the few active players – along with perhaps Jarrod Dyson of the Diamondbacks and Alex Gordon of the Royals – to sustain elite outfield defense well into his mid-thirties. Never a full-time regular at a position with any of the four organizations with whom he’s been a part, Gentry’s still managed to post 54 defensive runs saved in just over 3,330 innings since his debut in 2009. Though he’s failed ever to show much power (a career .339 slugging percentage in 1402 big-league plate appearances), Gentry’s always been a solid on-base threat, with a .333 career OBP responsible for the bulk of his career 85 wRC+ line.
At the very least, he’ll be a solid late-inning option for a Colorado club that’s relied on aging and inexperienced veterans at the position over the last few seasons. Ian Desmond is the latest to try his hand, but the veteran former first baseman has plunged even further into an ever-widening abyss at the plate. The club apparently doesn’t trust the injury-prone David Dahl or the wiry Raimel Tapia at the position, and already punted incumbent Charlie Blackmon over to right, so Gentry seems a prime option to give MLB’s toughest center field a crack.Comment -

#1159I can’t believe the Rockies and D Backs are behind the Giants in the standings. Awfully early I know but I didn’t expect much out of the Giants and here they are in position to sweep the Rockies.Comment -

#1166The great unknown for the Phillies:
How good are Zach Eflin and Nick Pivetta, who had high ERAs last year but excellent strikeout-to-walk ratios.
Eflin started his season with two good outings (one run over 12 innings), but now the hapless Marlins have pounded him for three home runs, ten hits and six runs over four innings on Saturday. The Marlins entered the game with just 35 runs in 14 games.Comment -

#1175Pillar is just a good player, Longoria has always been kinda overrated IMO.
As for the Padres, they are a good, young team. I think more than anything the Machado deal, while hes not having an incredible year, showed the young guys that ownership was ready to put their chips on the table and really play ball. I actually think they need to make a trade to unclog their OF, they need to be giving Franmil near everyday at bats.Comment -

#1176Padres' Green calls umpires 'literally clueless'
Arizona Diamondbacks closer Greg Holland threw a couple of tight inside pitches to the San Diego Padres' Francisco Mejia during Sunday's ninth inning, raising questions about whether it was in retaliation for Padres pitchers hitting two Diamondbacks with pitches on Saturday in Phoenix.
Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said all that mattered was that Holland got three outs to end the 8-4 victory.
But Padres manager Andy Green had some choice words for the umpiring crew.
"Umpires being literally clueless on the field right now. That's inexcusable at that point in time," Green said. "The first one, OK maybe slips. The second one, we know what is going on there. It is not lost on us at all.
If it is lost on them (umpires), they are not paying attention to the baseball game."Comment -

#1181I just hope Chris Sale pitches better against the Yanks tomorrow. Hard to believe he’s been part of the Red Sox pitching woes this year. I didn’t expect that he’d struggle this badly when I drafted him but I do expect him and the Red Sox to snap out of it eventually, just too much talent on that club to be bad all year imo.Comment -

#1184The Braves announced today that they’ve placed southpaw Jonny Venters on the 10-day injured list. He’s dealing with a strained calf, though his struggles likely played a role in the timing. Venters made a miraculous return to the majors last year after five full seasons away owing to a brutal run of arm injuries. He pitched well enough to be tendered by the Atlanta organization. But Venters struggled this spring and has continued to do so through six regular-season appearances, over which he has surrendered six earned runs in just 2 2/3 innings.
More on the health front …
- A return is finally in sight for Angels DH (and once and future starting pitcher) Shohei Ohtani, who’s nearing readiness after undergoing Tommy John surgery last year. As Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com was among those to tweet, the reigning Rookie of the Year had a promising medical check-up today. So long as nothing intervenes, he’ll begin taking cuts against live pitching early next week. It’s not hard to imagine Ohtani ramping up quickly from that point in time.
- Backup Cubs backstop Victor Caratini underwent surgery to repair his broken left hamate bone, as Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune reports on Twitter. That’s not surprising news, and doesn’t really modify his expected timeline. It’ll be about four to six weeks on the mend for Caratini, who’ll presumably need to ramp back up therafter and take at least a brief rehab stint. Even if all goes as hoped, it’s likely the Cubs ill go without him until June.
- The Blue Jays have some relief on the way with right-hander Ryan Tepera set to be activated in the next day or two, MLB.com’s Gregor Chisolm tweets. The elbow inflammation that put Tepera on the shelf to open the year has obviously not proven to be too big a concern, as the 31-year-old is ready to roll after just two minor-league rehab appearances. Tepera has been a solid pen piece for the Toronto organization, turning in 193 2/3 innings of 3.49 ball over the past four seasons.

#1189Ohtani cleared to face live pitching in week
Los Angeles Angels slugger Shohei Ohtani had a follow-up appointment Monday to check on his progress from Tommy John surgery and was cleared to hit live pitching in about a week.
"All is good," manager Brad Ausmus told reporters. "Everything came back good. The doctor was pleased and he's going to continue his progression."
Ohtani, 24, has been hitting off a pitching machine. The team has targeted May for his return.
Ohtani hit .285 with 22 homers and 61 RBIs and as a pitcher went 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA in 51 2/3 innings to win Rookie of the Year last season.
He will not pitch this season, but the Angels could use his left-handed bat. The Angels are 8-7 but are currently in the bottom third of the league in OPS.
Information from ESPN's Alden Gonzalez was used in this report.Comment -
