Rockies first baseman Ian Desmond suffered a fracture in his left hand, the club announced to reporters (including MLB.com’s Thomas Harding). Desmond was hit by a pitch from the Reds’ Rookie Davis during the fourth inning of today’s Spring Training contest between the two teams, and soon left the game during a pitching change. Desmond will visit a hand specialist on Monday to determine the extent of the injury, though it seems all but certain he’ll begin the season on the disabled list.
[Updated Rockies depth chart at Roster Resource]
Needless to say, this is a very unfortunate setback for both Desmond and a Rockies team that has designs on contending for a postseason berth in 2017. This will mark Desmond’s first trip to the DL since 2012, when he missed almost a month of action recovering from a torn oblique. Apart from that year, Desmond has been a picture of durability, appearing in at least 154 games in every other season since 2010.
Colorado signed Desmond to a five-year, $70MM deal in December that was widely considered to be the offseason’s most surprising free agent signing. Not only did the Rockies surrender the 11th overall pick in the draft (the highest non-protected pick) to sign the qualifying offer free agent, but the Rockies also intended to use Desmond as their starting first baseman. Desmond was going to be playing the position for the first time in his pro career, and given Desmond’s ability to play shortstop and all three outfield spots, many questioned the Rockies’ decision to deploy such a good athlete at the least-demanding position on the diamond.
Desmond’s fractured hand continues what has already been a nightmarish spring for the Rockies. Outfielder David Dahl will also miss the start of the year due to a stress reaction in his ribcage, rotation hopeful Chris Rusin (oblique) and reliever Chad Qualls (elbow) have both been sidelined and, worst of all, Chad Bettis has begun chemotherapy treatments in his continuing battle with testicular cancer.
The Rockies re-signed Mark Reynolds to a minor league deal last month, and the veteran now looks to be the top candidate to fill in for Desmond at first base. Rookies Jordan Patterson and Stephen Cardullo are also potential internal solutions, with the left-handed hitting Patterson perhaps the best fit to platoon with the righty-swinging Reynolds. The Rockies could also use Gerardo Parra (who saw some limited action at first last season) or utilityman Alexi Amarista could try out one of the few positions he has never played in his MLB career, though both could be better deployed in the outfield given Dahl’s absence.
As for external possibilities, former Rockie Justin Morneau is available on the open market, though Morneau’s ability for extended time in the field could be a question mark given his checkered injury history. Ryan Howard, Billy Butler and Kelly Johnson are a few other notable first base names still looking to find a new team. Colorado is also likely to explore trades or waiver claims on other first basemen who may become available as teams look to trim their rosters before Opening Day.

Desmond should have a huge year in Colorado if he can stay on the field.

Tim Tebow singled to left field off Marlins' reliever Kyle Lobstein Monday for his first spring training hit. There was a loud roar at First Data Field. Tebow had gone 0-for-8 in his first two games. He will play Monday and Tuesday because the Mets are short of outfielders due to the WBC.

Reds righty Anthony DeSclafani has been diagnosed with a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching arm, president of baseball operations Dick Williams told reporters including Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer. For now, he’ll be shut down for a month before being reevaluated.
On the one hand, the fact that DeSclafani isn’t already set for Tommy John surgery means there’s a chance he’ll ultimately avoid it. There are, after all, several new techniques being utilized to forestall a surgical option or limit the damage if a procedure is performed. And teammate Michael Lorenzen was able to avoid a TJ procedure last year with a “very similar” injury, per team doctor Timothy Kremcheck (via Buchanan, on Twitter).
Clearly, though, the club will need to chart a cautious course to avoid more damage to DeSclafani’s UCL. And given the location of the injury, a TJ outcome seems squarely within the range of plausible results. While it doesn’t seem to be on the table presently, avoiding the legendary procedure — with its year-plus rehab timeline — will require care.
What that means in the immediate future is that the Reds likely won’t welcome DeSclafani back to the MLB rotation for quite some time. Lorenzen, whose injury occurred in the middle of March last year, did not make it up to the majors until June 24th. In his case, a bout of mono intervened to extend the recovery timeline, so perhaps DeSclafani can make it back sooner — though the latter will also need a lengthier ramp-up since he’ll return to the rotation.
For Cincinnati, it obviously stings to lose the presumptive staff ace for a decent chunk of the upcoming season. While there’s little chance the organization would’ve been competitive, DeSclafani certainly could’ve become a highly appealing mid-season trade chip; while that’s still possible, it’s perhaps less likely — and there’ll surely be at least a bit of an injury discount to his value given his recent health questions. Additionally, losing this much time after an injury-shortened 2016 season could mean that DeSclafani will face innings limitations in 2018.
The missing innings will also tell in arbitration, which DeSclafani will qualify for next fall. Even if he continues his excellent 2016 work — 3.28 ERA with 7.7 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 — upon his return, his arb earnings will be limited by the limits on the number of frames he’ll be able to accumulate.

Yeah, I don't mind the Mets making him a sideshow either. At least he's better than Garth Brooks. Garth might have the better throwing arm though.

Cardinals pitcher Jordan Schafer to have elbow surgery Friday

JUPITER, Fla. -- St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Jordan Schafer will have surgery this week on his left elbow and could ultimately need Tommy John surgery.

The 30-year-old Schafer is one of the more intriguing stories in spring training. He spent six seasons in the big leagues as a speedy outfielder with the Braves, Astros and Twins, but is trying to reinvent himself as a pitcher after his career appeared to have ended.

Schafer felt soreness in his forearm over the weekend after struggling in exhibition games. The Cardinals said Tuesday that an MRI revealed the injury.
Schafer will have surgery on Friday, and it will be determined then whether he requires a ligament repair or a complete reconstruction.

The Cardinals invited Schafer to spring training as a non-roster invitee, intrigued by his versatility. He pitched in three levels of the minors for the Dodgers last year, going 1-1 with a 3.83 ERA in 40 games and averaging more than a strikeout per inning.

Schafer last played in the majors with Minnesota in 2015. He is a career .228 hitter with 103 steals.

I didn't know he was trying to come back as a pitcher. I remember trading for him years ago in a dynasty league.

11:12pm: Kiermaier is guaranteed $53.5MM on the contract, reports USA Today’s Bob Nightengale (on Twitter). The agreement is pending a physical.
9:36pm: Jim Bowden of ESPN and MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM reports that the Rays and Kiermaier are in agreement on the deal, which is for six years in total.
8:38pm: The Rays and center fielder Kevin Kiermaier are nearing an extension that would pay the defensive star at least $50MM over a term of at least six years, reports Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times. Kiermaier is represented by Reynolds Sports Management.

The six-year deal would begin with the 2017 season, according to Topkin, meaning it would replace the $2.975MM salary to which Kiermaier agreed when avoiding arbitration as a Super Two player earlier this offseason.
The reported deal, then, would buy out all four of Kiermaier’s potential arbitration years in addition to a pair of would-be free agent campaigns. It’s not known if there’d be any sort of options included on the deal (though the Rays have typically secured at least one option year in the majority of their contract extensions), but the current six-year term would run through his age-32 season, putting Kiermaier on pace to reach free agency prior to his age-33 campaign.
Kiermaier, who will turn 27 in April, is regarded as one of the best, if not the best defensive player in all of Major League Baseball, regardless of position. Over the past two seasons, his 44 Defensive Runs Saved are the highest among any Major League player, and he’s also pacing all of baseball with an Ultimate Zone Rating of +42.3 runs. Unsurprisingly, he won a Gold Glove in each of those two years.
In addition to his superlative glovework, Kiermaier has produced at a slightly above-average clip at the plate. He’s reached double-digit home run and stolen base totals in each of the past twos years, topping out at 12 long balls and 21 steals in 2016. Overall, in 1314 plate appearances since making his big league debut, the former 31st-round pick has turned in a .258/.313/.425 batting line that checks in at five percent better than the league-average hitter, per context neutral stats like OPS+ and wRC+.
Kiermaier had come up as a mostly speculative trade candidate at various points in the offseason, but the news of a long-term deal all but eliminates the possibility that he’ll be moved at any time in the near future. While the team’s corner outfield scenario is far less clear — Colby Rasmus, Steven Souza, Corey Dickerson and Nick Franklin all figure to be in the mix — Kiermaier now joins franchise icon Evan Longoria and ace Chris Archer as a cornerstone for years to come. Outside of that talented trio, the Rays don’t have a single player on a guaranteed contract beyond the 2018 campaign, so even with this new deal and a perennially modest payroll, the Rays will be able to supplement the roster with additional pieces to whatever extent ownership allows.
Taking a step back, the extension for Kiermaier proved to be considerably more costly for the Rays than recent extensions for center fielders with two-plus years of big league service. Ender Inciarte, who was also a Super Two player, inked a five-year deal worth $30.525MM this offseason, while Odubel Herrera inked a virtually identical five-year, $30.5MM deal with the Phillies. (Herrera, unlike Inciarte and Kiermaier, was not a Super Two player.) Of course, while Inciarte is a very strong defender himself and Herrera has been a superior bat to this point in his career, neither of those players has matched Kiermaier’s defensive accolades.
To that end, Kiermaier’s deal serves to further exemplify the premium that’s being placed on defense on a league-wide basis. It was five years ago that Cameron Maybin, then considered a premium defender in center field, signed for half this amount, while a more established offensive center fielder, Andrew McCutchen, inked an exceptionally similar pact to the one Kiermaier will land.

Rays outfielder Kevin Kiermaier ranks first among all players in defensive runs saved over the last 3 seasons with 81.

He also ranks 3rd among outfielders in Wins Above Replacement in that span, trailing only Mike Trout and Mookie Berra.

So, Dan Warthen and Matt Harvey think this could be the new normal, low 90s fastball, heavy on secondary stuff. At least for awhile.

Diamondbacks outfielder Yasmany Tomas has been diagnosed with a strained oblique after an MRI, manager Torey Lovullo tells Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic (via Twitter). The 26-year-old has already missed about a week with what had been described as lower back tightness.
In the immediate aftermath of the issue arising, the new Arizona skipper had suggested it was viewed as “a little bit of aggravation” that would require only “a few days down.” Clearly, though, Tomas didn’t bounce back quite as hoped, leading to the closer look and the new diagnosis.
It’s obviously not possible to know much about the anticipated timeline for return based upon the mere presence of an oblique strain. Even if the severity were apparent, the road back is entirely dependent upon how fast healing occurs and whether the player can avoid aggravation of the injury while regaining strength and working back toward baseball readiness.
Oblique troubles can pose big problems for ballplayers, to be sure, though it’d be unwise to assume at this time that Tomas will be hampered in 2017. He was also off to an 0-for-17 start at the plate this spring, though the bat isn’t much in question after he slashed a robust .272/.313/.508 last year.
For the D-Backs, there could be some interest in an outside addition if Tomas isn’t ready for Opening Day. The club has several veteran corner outfield options in camp, led by David Peralta and also including catcher/outfielder Chris Herrmann as well as minor-league free agents Jeremy Hazelbaker, Gregor Blanco, and Oswaldo Arcia. But all of those players hit from the left side; if Tomas is expected to miss anything length of time, then, a righty hitting fourth outfielder might well make a good deal of sense. There are a few free agents left who could hold appeal, or Arizona could wait to see how Tomas progresses and what players shake loose from rival organizations.

Nationals GM Mike Rizzo was a guest on MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM earlier today and discussed his team’s ninth inning option with hosts Jim Bowden and Jim Duquette (audio link via Soundcloud). “We feel that we have a closer in house,” said Rizzo. “We’ve felt that ever since early in the offseason when we didn’t get one of the big three closers. We feel that he’s here. We’ll figure out which one it is. They all have the stuff to do it. You talk about a power bullpen — we’ve got four or five guys that throw 95-plus in the bullpen.” Pressed further on the issue later in the interview, Rizzo conceded that if things aren’t going well during the season, the Nationals will be open to seeking outside alternatives, but the GM did not indicate that he’s looking to acquire a closer in the limited time between now and Opening Day.
David Robertson has been the “proven closer” that is most commonly linked to the Nats in trade rumors, though FanRag’s Jon Heyman reported earlier today that the sides don’t seem to feel the other is all that serious about getting a trade worked out. Per Heyman, the Nationals feel the asking price on Robertson means that the Sox aren’t all that interested in moving him, whereas the Sox feel the Nationals haven’t been very aggressive in pursuing him.
A couple more on last year’s NL East champs…
                                                                  • Also from that MLB Network Radio interview, Bowden specifically asked Rizzo about the team’s acquisition of left-hander Enny Romero from the Rays. Bowden noted that Romero caught his attention during the World Baseball Classic when hitting 100 mph with his fastball, and Rizzo explained that Romero has been on the team’s radar for years. The Washington GM revealed that he pushed for the Rays to include Romero in the trade that sent Nate Karns to the Rays in exchange for Felipe Rivero and Jose Lobaton, but the Rays would not part with him.

Scherzer had previously experimented with a three-fingered grip on his fastball in order to alleviate some pressure on the problematic knuckle, but he was relieved to get back to his traditional pitch arsenal today, Janes notes. The plan for Scherzer is to start a Major League game six days from now, which would give Scherzer time to make three more spring outings. “That’s 70, 85, 100 [pitches],” Scherzer said, suggesting that he’ll have time to ramp up for the season. Janes notes that that schedule wouldn’t line Scherzer up to start on Opening Day but could allow him to make his 2017 debut during the Nationals’ first turn through their rotation.
