#359Evan Gattis Out Four To Six Weeks Following Hernia Surgery
By Steve Adams | February 9, 2016 at 11:24pm CST
11:24pm: Gattis’ surgery took place earlier today, tweets MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart.
9:08pm: Astros designated hitter Evan Gattis recently underwent surgery to repair a hernia and will be sidelined for four to six weeks, reports Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle. As a result, Gattis will miss “most of his Spring Training, at a minimum,” per Drellich, though the overall injury is not considered to be severe in nature.
Gattis, 29, has an arbitration hearing set for Feb. 16, and Drellich notes that the new revelation in his health could have some form of an impact on the case. Of course, his current injury status doesn’t change the power production that Gattis delivered in his first year with Houston, when he batted .246/.285/.463 with 27 homers and 88 RBIs in 604 plate appearances. He submitted a $3.8MM salary figure for the upcoming season, while the team countered at $3MM. As a file-and-trial team, the Astros have a policy of not negotiating one-year deals once salary figures are exchanged, so an arbitration panel will decide which of the two figures Gattis should earn in a week’s time.Comment -

#362Yu Darvish (elbow) is on track to begin throwing bullpen sessions in March.
Working his way back from Tommy John surgery, Darvish resumed a throwing program last August but hasn't been cleared for mound work just yet. He's currently long-tossing at 120 feet and throwing off flat ground at 60-75 feet. Darvish is aiming to rejoin the Rangers' rotation around mid-May to early-June. "I have no problems at all right now. I have no concerns," Darvish said. "I feel like I could throw 95 right now, but they told me not to. I feel really good right now."

#364Diamondbacks are making all kinds of noise this offseason. BP showed some interesting numbers on teams that do this. The square in me thinks this could be an exception to the rule. Futures dropped 22 to 18 to one after the Clippard, Segura news. Ticket sales up which is always a good thing, happy for Zona fans.. can't envision being able to profit consistently now that they will be the trendy pick.

I've had two hernia surgeries. One on each side. The recovery pain is very intense. Must have painkillers.
Mine were both successful, yet I still get some slight discomfort every now and then. Definitely stays with you...Comment -

#373Mariners Prospect
SYDNEY, Australia -- Mariners prospect Dylan Unsworth pitched eight shutout innings, scattering two hits, to put South Africa into the winner's bracket on the first day of the World Baseball Classic Qualifier with a 7-1 win over New Zealand at Blacktown International Sportspark on Thursday.
"I think everything [was working]. Just commanding the fastball, changeup, curveball, everything," said Unsworth, a 23-year-old right-hander who reached Double-A last season. "When you have a three-run cushion, you feel confident, you feel good. Honestly, all you have to do is throw strikes and everything will happen after that."
Unsworth induced 15 ground balls and retired the first 11 Kiwis he faced. He struck out the side in his final inning, striking out four overall on 89 pitches. He also retired his final 10 batters.
"He just competed. He attacked us. He came right after us with his fastball. He was able in certain counts to pitch behind a little bit. He was relentless," said New Zealand manager Chris Woodward, who is the Dodgers' third-base coach and used to coach with the Mariners. "I actually had him in Seattle, and I knew him pretty well. I love the way he competes and I wouldn't say he's got Cy Young stuff, but he's got good enough stuff to where he can pitch at a pretty high level because of his competitiveness."
Elario closes out the game 2/10/16: Jared Elario gets Scott Campbell to ground into a game-ending double play, securing the 7-1 victory for South Africa
Designated hitter Brett Willemburg had two hits and drove in two runs for South Africa.
South Africa was knocking on the door from the start, but New Zealand's defense kept the opposition off the board until two errors in the third inning led to a 3-0 advantage.
In the first, New Zealand shortstop Scott Campbell went up and grabbed a line drive to end the innning, before left fielder Tim Auty made a diving catch on the dirt of the warning track to end the second with one runner on.
Auty's falling grab at track 2/10/16: Timothy Auty runs back to the warning track and falls to the ground as he makes a catch in left field to end the frame
The defensive magic continued for New Zealand into the third, when third baseman Daniel Lamb-Hunt went to one knee and completed a double play, and it looked like New Zealand would again dodge trouble for starting pitcher Scott Cone. But Campbell's throwing error put a runner on with two outs, before Cone was relieved by his brother, Ben Cone, after 43 pitches.
Ben Cone then gave up back-to-back singles to Kyle Botha and Willemburg, the second plating the first run. Then, after hitting Rowan Ebersohn to load the bases, a wild pitch and ensuing throwing error from behind the plate, made it 3-0.
"We felt at one stage we should have been five or six runs up, but in a game of this nature we'll take the three and we'll have to work from there," said South Africa manager Alan Phillips.
Brandon Bouillon, who was batting at the time of the wildness, instead struck out to end the inning.
"Any time that we could put runs on the board early, it's a bit of a settling factor in our squad," said Phillips.
New Zealand's six pitchers walked seven, hit three batters and had two wild pitches. The Kiwis also made three errors, the final one coming in a four-run, four-hit ninth inning.
"I thought our pitchers did a pretty good job," said Woodward. "I thought they kept us in the game, and if it wasn't for a couple mistakes, it would have probably been a scoreless game going into the ninth inning."
Right-hander Carl Michaels is slated to throw for South Africa on Friday against the winner of Australia and the Philippines, who face off on Thursday. Right-hander Andrew Marck will throw in an elimination game for New Zealand vs. the Australia-Philippines loser.Comment -

#376ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the potential contract being discussed between the Orioles and free agent right-hander Yovani Gallardo would be worth three years, $40-45 million.
Nothing's official yet, but there's a ton of smoke here. Multiple outlets have reported that Gallardo and the O's are closing in on a contract. The club will have to surrender the 14th overall selection in this summer's amateur draft should they sign the soon-to-be 30-year-old right-hander, but he provides an upgrade for a rotation that has needed a boost. Last season, Gallardo pitched to a 3.42 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and 121/68 K/BB ratio across 184 1/3 innings (33 starts) for the Rangers. Should the Orioles ink Gallardo to a contract, they could next pursue outfielder Dexter Fowler. Pedro Alvarez and Jay Bruce are outside options as well.Comment -

#385MLB Network's Jon Heyman hears the Reds believe the Orioles have the prospects to swing a deal for Jay Bruce.
That bit of information is almost certainly a follow-up to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal's report Wednesday that the Orioles would have interest in a trade for Bruce but it was uncertain that the O's could pull off such a deal. The Orioles are looking at a number of different options for adding a bat, including signing a free agent like Dexter Fowler or Pedro Alvarez, and it's unlikely that they would look to acquire more than one. While the O's seem to have a lot of plates in the air, the market for Bruce has been quiet for much of the winter.
