ARI - RB Chris Johnson agrees to terms

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Jets) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals Monday, Aug. 17. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Last year was the first season that Johnson did not rush for over 1,000 yards. He finished the season with only 663 yards and one rushing touchdown for the Jets. Johnson now will compete with rookie David Johnson to work as a complementary back behind Andre Ellington. If Johnson has anything left in the tank, he could cut into Ellington's workload and frustrate fantasy owners.

Our very own Cecil Lammey was watching Anderson closely today and reported the Broncos starter looked good on the practice field. Anderson could have come back into the game against the Seahawks, but the team decided to take a longer look at backups Ronnie Hillman and Montee Ball. At this time, there is no clear handcuff for Anderson. Hillman looked great in the preseason game against Seattle, while Ball has been performing well in camp.

Philip Rivers just signed a deal with the Chargers over the weekend that pays him $65 million in guarantees. Manning wants more money, and with two Super Bowl rings that Rivers doesn't have he might be able to get that. The two sides seem to be far apart in contract talks at this time but things can change quickly.

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett still don't know who will start this season. Head coach Bill O'Brien said he doesn't know when a starter will be named. Hoyer started the Texans' first preseason game, but O'Brien said Mallett would start the second preseason game.

Fantasy owners are not on the edge of their seat waiting for this decision. Hoyer has the experience advantage, but Mallett has the stronger arm. The whole situation is a mess and will hold down the numbers of the passing game.

The Falcons are going to need to score 30 points per game with their shoddy defense. Fantasy owners are dialed in on Julio Jones as a top-5 fantasy wide receiver. White is no longer the same player he used to be, but we still like him as a WR3/WR4 who could snare about 75 catches this season.

Tennessee Titans rookie RB David Cobb said he wants to improve on his reads and breaking tackles after the Titans' first preseason game. Head coach Ken Whisenhunt must have seen something different, saying Cobb earned more time with the first-team offense after his performance.

Fantasy owners need to be alert here. Bishop Sankey could begin the season as the starter, but we believe Cobb is the better back and could take over at some point this year. Cobb is a powerful, efficient and determined runner. He's not going to break ankles, but he may break facemasks. He doesn't shy away from contact, and Cobb can create his own space as a runner because of his powerful lower body. With a larger opportunity, the rookie could easily outperform his current ADP (RB48, 11.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

BUF - RB LeSean McCoy will have MRI

Updating a previous report, Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy (hamstring) will have an MRI on the hamstring injury that caused him to leave practice Tuesday, Aug. 18. The hamstring is not off the bone, however.

Terrible news for the Bills here. They already have almost all of the running backs on the roster battling some sort of ailment, and now they'll be without McCoy for a while. Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not treated properly, and this injury doesn't sound minor. We'll know more about the severity when the MRI results are revealed.

I wanted to have two running backs, and that's why we got Ryan [Mathews]. I don't think you can have a guy carry it 370 to 400 times per season and be successful. We're going to run it a lot -- we always do -- but we'll have more than one guy doing it,' Kelly said.

Don't be surprised if Murray has 100 fewer carries than he did last year. In 2014, Murray rushed the ball a whopping 393 times. This year, we think he gets the rock about 270 times with Mathews serving as a valuable backup.

This injury takes the wind out of the sails of the Panthers passing game. Benjamin was the 16th-best fantasy receiver in the league last year, and he's the most important target for Cam Newton. With guys like rookie Devin Funchess and veterans Ted Ginn Jr. and Jerricho Cotchery, the Panthers are likely to struggle moving the ball through the air.

Delmas has had a rough run of injuries over the course of his career. Their pass rush is so good that the Dolphins might not miss Delmas much in the back of the defense, especially with Brent Grimes on #1 receivers.

First off, we're not sure Zach Zenner is the authority here. Even so, we could see that happening, but rookie Ameer Abdullah is going to force a RBBC at least. Bell is coming back from two injuries, while Abdullah is dazzling at most every practice. Abdullah has speed, big-play ability and quickness in the open field. He's a smaller back, but he runs tough inside. Abdullah is at least an electric change-of-pace back, but he could end up as the more valuable fantasy asset in the Lions backfield.

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon wants to be a more decisive runner. Gordon said he needs to work on calming himself down and let the game come to him, acknowledging that success is a process and doesn't happen right away.

Gordon needs to improve his pass-protection ability. If he does that, the role for him should be large this season. Gordon is a RB2 with RB1 upside for fantasy owners.

This is a good piece of news for McCoy's fantasy owners, but whether or not he'll be ready is up in the air right now.

The starter on the outside could be Wheaton, but Bryant's fantasy value is still going to be interesting because of his red-zone presence and big-play ability. Wheaton is going off the board right now at WR55 (12.05) while Bryant's ADP is WR24 (5.04) in 12-team PPR leagues. We imagine with this news hitting the wire, we'll see the two get a little closer in ADP.

We'd look for a better situation.

Rodgers said that means extending plays and getting rid of the football when he needs to. Rodgers said he's kept his body in shape and improved his endurance in order to be more ready for longer-lasting plays throughout games.

Add in the Odell Beckham Jr factor and the injury-riddled offensive line, and you should keep your expectations lower than normal.We see him as a borderline WR4-WR5, with a slight bump in PPR leagues.

PHI - QB Tim Tebow should make team

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles QB Tim Tebow continues to impress head coach Chip Kelly, and Tebow is expected to earn a spot on the active roster if he doesn't make any glaring errors over the rest of the preseason, according to a team source. Kelly has been impressed with Tebow's running ability and his improvement throwing the football. Tebow can become a valuable weapon with the new two-point rule and in short-yardage situations. QB Matt Barkley is available for trade. Tebow was 6-for-12 for 69 yards in the team's first preseason game last weekend, and he had four carries for 15 yards and a touchdown.

Chip Kelly is definitely running the show here and it's a good bet he has something in mind for Tebow. It likely spells doom for Matt Barkley who has been less than impressive. Yes, Sam Bradford is an injury risk but it's unlikey Tebow would hop over Mark Sanchez, who is more polished and played well in Kelly's system last season.

He's made significant progress from his rehab from knee problems that limited him in his rookie season.

We know what Cassel is—a mediocre quarterback who can keep the offense going, but nothing more. We don't know what Taylor is though, and he may have more upside. Ultimately, this is an offense that is supposed to run early and often, with a so-so offensive line. Even with Sammy Watkins around, neither of these quarterbacks is worth a roster spot.

Also, water is wet, the sky is up and pain hurts. The league has long known that Cutler seems to fall apart in tough situations, and given that Brandon Marshall is gone, while rookie Kevin White is hurt (and potentially heading to injured reserve), he seems short on toys, which could mean short on patience. We'd rank him as a mid to late range QB2 this season with some lingering concerns about the offense.

CAR - RB Cameron Artis-Payne having strong camp

Artis-Payne has shown good power and agility during preseason games but averaged only 3.0 yards per carry in the first preseason game with four of his carries going for two yards or fewer.

Detroit Lions RB Zach Zenner has shown good vision and balance during preseason games with the ability to gain extra yards. Zenner is competing for a roster spot during training camp.

If Joique Bell isn't ready for the regular season or the veteran breaks down, Zenner looks like the best inside runner the Lions have. The Bills need them on the field for Week 1 more than Preseason Week 2, but it is good to see them back in action. The Bills plan to run the ball a ton, so they'll need Jackson, though not as much as in the past. We see him as an RB4 right now, as long as LeSean McCoy stays healthy. With the mess at quarterback, Watkins sits as a low-end WR2 or a solid WR3. That's almost totally because of his ability though, so if the quarterbacks start being productive, he may end up more so as well. Easley isn't worth rostering, as he is too far down the depth chart.

We don't expect much from Harvin, who is a WR5 or WR6 at best. The Bills' quarterback position is a hot mess and even when he was on a winning team, Harvin has had issues with his teammates, so we're also not sold on him not imploding during the season. This whole offense seems like it's set to crash at the starting line.

Unless Ryan is trolling us and he's looking to keep Matt Simms, it appears the Bills aren't totally giving up on EJ Manuel. That's not to say he'll be starting anytime soon though. And really, we'd still avoid this mess. Taylor is at least intriguing but too unproven to rely on for fantasy purposes. Matt Cassel is aggressively mediocre. And the offensive line is shaky. Despite some good weapons in the passing game, we day pass on them.

Keep an eye on this situation. Zenner is a one-speed back who can work well as a receiver out of the backfield. He has natural instincts for running the ball, and his efficient style means he doesn't lose a lot of yards.
