ATL - Owner wants to keep WR Julio Jones

Source: The Atlanta Journal-Constitution - D. Orlando Ledbetter

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones is in the middle of contract extension talks with the team, and owner Arthur Blank said he wants Jones to remain for the team for the rest of his career. Blank said there is no timetable for the deal to be completed.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No shocker here. Jones is one of the best WRs in the game today, and the Falcons will be compensating him as such. We feel Jones should get a deal similar to what Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas received (five years, $70 million) from their respective teams earlier in the year.

TEN - WR Kendall Wright building chemistry with QB

Source: The Tennessean - David Climer

Tennessee Titans WR Kendall Wright has been developing a solid chemistry with QB Marcus Mariota during training camp. Wright said he has learned to keep active during his routes since Mariota can extend plays.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Wright has to be energized that he's playing with such an athletic and potentially playmaking quarterback. We like Wright as a low-end WR4 with upside. The veteran receiver should become a favorite target for the rookie this season.

CLE - RB Duke Johnson not on the field

    Source: ESPN.com - Pat McManamon

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) is not participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Terrance West did return from his hamstring injury, so Johnson needs to get back on the field soon to avoid being marginalized in the early season backfield mix. The Browns running game was Cowboys-esque before center Alex Mack went down last year, so Johnson could be missing a big early opportunity if this injury makes his transition to the pros slow in year one.

ATL - Atlanta's top RBs still out

    Source: ESPN.com - Vaughn McClure

Atlanta Falcons RBs Devonta Freeman (hamstring) and Tevin Coleman (hamstring) are not participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Terron Ward has been getting first-team reps in their absence and the little brother of Broncos safety TJ Ward has a chance to make the team if the Falcons decide to carry four running backs. Big play threat Antone Smith is also getting more work while Coleman and Freeman mend on the sidelines.

BUF - QB Matt Cassel expected to start vs. CAR

    Source: ESPN - Adam Schefter

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel is expected to be the starting quarterback for the team's first preseason game against the Carolina Panthers.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Bills quarterback competition has sounded more like slapstick comedy than intense football so far. Cassel is just as likely to be cut as he is to start Week 1, although Tyrod Taylor and EJ Manuel could be his biggest allies in his mission to make the team.

JAX - TE Julius Thomas making quick impression

    Source: The Florida Times-Union - Ryan O'Halloran

Jacksonville Jaguars TE Julius Thomas has already established himself as 'the best player on the team, period,' according to LB Dan Skuta. 'He's going to be a matchup nightamre for a lot of teams,' Skuta said Satuday, Aug. 8. 'Get him on some guys that aren't used to covering him like me. That's what happens with good players. You've got to be perfect.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Thomas is a fantastic player who splashed onto the scene in 2013 and has caught 24 touchdown passes over the last two years. His numbers should go down in Jacksonville since he's no longer catching passes from Peyton Manning, but we still think Thomas is a low-end TE1 for fantasy owners.

JAX - QB Blake Bortles solid in scrimmage

    Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles completed eight of his 16 pass attempts for 80 yards and three touchdowns in a scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 8.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're interested to see if Bortles can take the next step forward in his pro career. He's got better weapons around him this year, should have the support of a better rushing attack and Bortles should be better protected this year too. Last season as a rookie, Bortles was sacked more than any other quarterback in the league.

DET - RB Theo Riddick likely to have similar role

Source: Detroit Free Press - Dave Birkett

Detroit Lions RB Theo Riddick is expected to have a similar role in 2015 than he did last season but could see more time in the slot.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Riddick is a valuable player for the Lions, but his fantasy value is low with the addition of rookie RB Ameer Abdullah. Keep Riddick on your waiver wire speed dial in case he's used more as a part-time back due to injury.

MIA - WR Kenny Stills sitting out

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins WR Kenny Stills (calf) is not participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

It's been about a week since Stills was first held out with this calf injury. If healthy, we love him as a deep threat for the Dolphins. Stills could end up as a WR4/WR5 for fantasy players in PPR leagues.

MIA - RB Jay Ajayi missing practice

Source: The Miami Herald - Adam H. Beasley

Miami Dolphins RB Jay Ajayi (hamstring) is not participating in practice Sunday, Aug. 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The rookie RB from Boise State has talent, but he's not had an impressive start to camp. He has struggled to make a positive impression on the field, and Ajayi has even struggled to hold onto the rock. Lamar Miller's hold on the starting job is as strong as ever. Consider Miller a high-end RB2 who could finish as a top-10 fantasy running back. Ajayi should be his backup, but don't handcuff him to Miller unless you play in a deep league.

DEN - WR Emmanuel Sanders on the field

    Source: 9News.com - Mike Klis

Denver Broncos WR Emmanuel Sanders (hamstring) is participating in practicing Sunday, Aug. 9.

    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is the news that we were looking for after Sanders' hamstring injury was considered minor publicly by the team. Confirmation that it was nothing significant means we can take our Sanders and Cody Latimer rankings off of the possible update list for now.

JAX - RB T.J. Yeldon sprains finger

    Source: The Associated Press
Jacksonville Jaguars RB T.J. Yeldon (finger) sprained a finger on his left hand when his hand slammed against the helmet of LB Jeremiah George on a touchdown run during the scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 8. Head coach Gus Bradley said Yeldon 'should be good.'
    [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Yeldon should be back out there soon. The sprained finger can be managed, and the rookie won't have to miss much (if any) time. Yeldon should be the top back for the Jaguars this year, and fantasy owners should consider him a low-end RB2.

                  Tuesday Update

PIT - Pittsburgh to work out kickers

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Free-agent PKs Jay Feely (Bears), Alex Henery (Lions) and Garrett Hartley (Browns) will work out for the Pittsburgh Steelers Tuesday, Aug. 11, now that PK Shaun Suisham (knee) is done for the season.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Any kicker added by the Steelers is going to be fantasy relevant. The Steelers have one of the most high-powered offenses in the league, and their kicker should finish the year as top-10 at the position.

STL - RB Todd Gurley doing individual drills

                  Source: NFL.com

St. Louis Rams RB Todd Gurley (knee) is doing some jogging at training camp Monday, Aug. 10, and looks normal. Gurley must now focus on strengthening his quadriceps muscles and all the muscles around his knee as the season approaches. It's still unclear if he'll be able to start the regular season on the field.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We're likely to see the Rams ease Gurley into action this year. They selected him with a top-10 pick in the 2015 NFL draft with the idea that he could be the bellcow back (and a superstar) when healthy. Gurley is currently coming back from the knee injury that he suffered last year at Georgia. He has the natural talent to eventually be the best back in the NFL. This year, Gurley may split time with Tre Mason for most of the season as he gets back to form.

CAR - QB Cam Newton involved in scuffle

                  Source: ESPN.com - David Newton

Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton was involved in an altercation with CB Josh Norman during practice Monday, Aug. 10, after Newton tried to tackle Norman when he intercepted a pass.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We love the fire from Newton (and Norman) here. This time of training camp emotions are running high. These two should save their aggression for their opponents in the preseason.

BAL - WR Steve Smith in final season

Source: NFL Network - Ian Rapoport

Baltimore Ravens WR Steve Smith has announced that he will retire after the 2015 season.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

And there you have it. Smith has been one of the best receivers over the last 15 years. He's fiery, and Smith has played with that chip on his shoulder for his entire career. Smith faded at the end of last season, but he's still a full-time player for the Ravens and he should be capable of getting 1,000 yards receiving this season.

NYJ - NY's running back depth is solid

                  Source: NFL.com

New York Jets RB Chris Ivory is the team's starting running back, but the Jets' running back depth behind him with RBs Stevan Ridley, Zac Stacy and Bilal Powell is impressive and will give QB Geno Smith a lot of help out of the backfield.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets don't have a problem at the running back position. We'll see if Ridley can push Ivory for the top spot when healthy. The team loves the versatility of Powell, and even Stacy is a decent starting option if needed.

BAL - WR Breshad Perriman not too far behind

                  Source: ESPN.com - Jamison Hensley

Baltimore Ravens WR Breshad Perriman (knee) has yet to practice with the team in training camp, but offensive coordinator Marc Trestman doesn't think Perriman's absence will set him back from learning the offense. Head coach John Harbaugh said Perriman is 'getting closer' to returning, and he didn't rule him out for the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 13. WR Kamar Aiken has a better grasp of the No. 2 receiver job with injuries to Perriman and WR Marlon Brown. The Ravens don't think Perriman's injury is serious, and he has time to catch up even if he misses the game Thursday.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Perriman may not be too far behind, but the missed time in training camp will hold him back when he eventually returns. We like the rookie's speed and big-play ability, but he's raw as a route-runner who may take time to develop.

NYJ - QB Geno Smith throws two INTs

                  Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Geno Smith threw his first two interceptions of training camp during practice Monday, Aug. 10, but did throw three touchdowns during the red zone part of practice.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith is going to have his ups-and-downs this year--especially early on. We believe in new OC Chan Gailey, and he should be able to craft an offense that gets the best out of Smith. If Smith struggles, Ryan Fitzpatrick can take over as the starter. Fitzpatrick had the best years of his career under Gailey when the two were in Buffalo.

CHI - WR Kevin White takes part in some drills

Source: Chicago Tribune - Dan Wiederer

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White (shin) was able to do some backpedaling, light jumping and agility drills at half speed during practice Monday, Aug. 10. Head coach John Fox said the team has a plan for White and that White has been able to do some exercises. There is a chance that White is not able to play in any of the preseason games, which the team is prepared for.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Fantasy owners need to stay dialed in here. White is talented and has big-play ability, but this injury is going to slow his development. Add in the fact that John Fox seems reluctant to play rookies at times (see Cody Latimer last year), and White may have a disappointing start to his first season in the pros. If healthy, White has the talent to be a dangerous weapon in the league. He's so good that Fox may have no choice but to feature him often opposite Alshon Jeffery.

DAL - RB Darren McFadden making progress

Source: Fort Worth Star-Telegram - Drew Davison

Dallas Cowboys RB Darren McFadden (hamstring) is making progress in his recovery from a hamstring injury, and the team hopes he will be able to practice Saturday, Aug. 15.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Yes, it's actually news when McFadden is going to perhaps be able to practice. He's always been talented, but he's seemingly banged up all the time.

KC - QB Alex Smith impressed with WR Jeremy Maclin

Source: USA TODAY Sports - Lindsay H. Jones

Kansas City Chiefs WR Jeremy Maclin has impressed QB Alex Smith in practices this summer. 'I feel like that's the ultimate tool. For coach (Andy) Reid, he just loves drawing up stuff and creating stuff, so Jeremy will be all over the field,' Smith said. 'He'll be inside, he'll be outside, deep, short, running the ball, throwing the ball. I mean Jeremy is a guy that can do so much.' Head coach Andy Reid's schemes and offensive language remain largely the same from the time he and Maclin worked together with the Philadelphia Eagles, so Maclin doesn't need a ton of time to acclimate to his new offense.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Smith should be impressed with Maclin as the Chiefs haven't put the best wide receiver talent around their veteran quarterback. We'll see if Smith is bold enough to take chances on deep routes to Maclin. Kansas City should be able to throw a touchdown to a wide receiver this year (after zero TD passes to WRs last year), but nobody should expect this team to light it up through the air.

CLE - Cleveland lacking bell-cow running back

Source: The Cleveland Plain Dealer - Mary Kay Cabot

Cleveland Browns running backs coach Wilbert Montgomery called out the team's running backs for not stepping up and demanding the starting job and for not showing up to training camp in 'tip-top shape.' RBs Terrance West and Isaiah Crowell haven't stepped up to prove themselves as starting backs with rookie RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) injured. 'The guys that were here last year, you look for somebody to take that next step,' Montgomery said. 'Is it going to happen? I don't know, and that's why I let them know every day, the competition is still the same. It hasn't changed. Nobody wants the role.' Montgomery would prefer to avoid a running-back-by-committee approach that he took with several rookie runners in 2014. Crowell will not win the starting role by default because he's the only fully healthy running back. Montgomery sounded more positive about West than Crowell. Both running backs split the workload last season. Montgomery wasn't ready to rule out Johnson though, even though he could miss multiple preseason games. Johnson has shown to be more versatile than the other backs on roster.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

They're not lacking talent in the running back corps, but someone needs to emerge from the pack. We feel that is going to be Isaiah Crowell. He's a hammer between the tackles, and he's got the vision to create his own space as a runner. Rookie Duke Johnson should work as an explosive change-of-pace back behind Crowell.

WAS - WR DeSean Jackson sidelined

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Jackson's a speed guy, so this hamstring injury is a bit of a concern. The team will wisely ease him back into action.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Not a big deal here. Decker's just getting some rest.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

There's a chance that Richardson doesn't make the final roster. He could, but guys like Michael Dyer are going to push him for spots on the depth chart.

NYG - Odell Beckham will be limited
                  Source: NJ.com - Jordan Raanan
New York Giants WR Odell Beckham Jr. (hamstring) will travel with the team for their practices and preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals, but he will continue to be limited during practice.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]
Beckham's hamstring problems kept him out of action for the first four games of his rookie season. The Giants then saw the superstar explode onto the NFL scene. They'll wisely be cautious with him as he deals with this minor hamstring problem.

BUF - QB Matt Cassel solid at practice

                  Source: WKBW.com - Joe Buscaglia

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel went 9-for-12 with three touchdowns during practice Monday, Aug. 10.

                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Cassel will start the team's first preseason game, and he's going to put himself in the driver's seat if he continues to show well. E.J. Manuel is not impressing in camp, and Tyrod Taylor may just be too raw to really push for the starting job. If Cassel wins the starting job, he's not an exciting option for fantasy owners.

maybe he will be motivated to prove he still has the ability to be a feature back. worth a shot for a decent team with a legit qb.

NYJ - QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to open season as starter

                                  Source: ESPNNewYork.com - Rich Cimini

New York Jets QB Ryan Fitzpatrick will start the season as the team's starting quarterback after the injury to QB Geno Smith (jaw).

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Jets may not miss a beat with Fitzpatrick as the starter. The best years of his career came under Chan Gailey in Buffalo, and Gailey (now the Jets OC) will know how to craft an offense that best suits his skill set. Fitzpatrick may be so effective as the starter that Smith
doesn't get his job back when he's able to return.

STL - RB Tre Mason's stock rising?

                                  Source: USA TODAY Fantasy Sports

St. Louis Rams RB Tre Mason seems more and more likely to open the 2015 season as the unrivalled starter in the backfield for the regular-season opener Sunday, Sept. 13, against the Seattle Seahawks. RB Todd Gurley (knee) said Tuesday, Aug. 11, he doesn't know if he'll be cleared in time.

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

No big surprise here. Mason is talented, but the clock is ticking on his time in the starting lineup. While Mason is good, Gurley has the upside to be the best back in the game--when healthy. Gurley is coming back from the knee injury that cut his final season short last year at Georgia. The team wisely is bringing him along slowly as he returns. He may begin the season as a backup, but Gurley could end up being a stud for fantasy owners at the end of the season (fantasy playoffs).

DET - RB Ameer Abdullah stealing the show

                                  Source: NFL.com - Chris Wesseling

Detroit Lions RB Ameer Abdullah has been the most impressive player in camp, other than WR Calvin Johnson, per Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press Tuesday, Aug. 11.

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

An important note for fantasy owners here. Abdullah has the speed to get by defenders in the blink of an eye. Even though he's a smaller back, Abdullah is a determined runner inside. He could be the top back for the Lions this year with Joique Bell coming back from two injuries (knee, Achilles').

CHI - QB Jay Cutler remains perfect

                                  Source: ChicagoFootball.com - Kevin Fishbain

Chicago Bears QB Jay Cutler has yet to throw an interception in 7-on-7 or team drills through 11 practices. Cutler accredited offensive coordinator Adam Gase for the schemes. Cutler also laughed at a question about the significance of the feat, 'Camp's camp,' he said. 'We're not getting hit. These aren't live bullets. So we'll see what happens when we start going.'

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

This is not a good thing. Just like Marcus Mariota in Tennessee, avoiding interceptions in PRACTICE is not what a quarterback needs to do. Practice is where mistakes don't cost a thing, and the lessons they teach can be invaluable. We'd rather see a quarterback make a few mistakes against his own team instead of wetting the bed against an opponent. We're interested to see if Cutler will actually listen and take to coaching this year, but zero picks in practice does not "wow" us.

TB - QB Jameis Winston compared, praised

Source: Yahoo! Sports - Eric Adelson

Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Jameis Winston was compared to Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers by teammate C Evan Dietrich-Smith. Smith's previous team was the Packers. WR Kenny Bell also gave Winston praise, saying he's shown smarts in his first offseason.

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

We like Winston and appreciate his game, but let's not go crazy. Winston could eventually develop into a Ben Roethlisberger-like quarterback. Fantasy owners should consider him a QB3 with upside during his rookie season.

BUF - QB Matt Cassel running offense

                                  Source: ESPN.com - Mike Rodak

Buffalo Bills QB Matt Cassel is running the first-team offense Tuesday, Aug. 11. QB Tyrod Taylor is running with the second team.

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Taylor is an interesting player to monitor in the preseason. He's got a rocket arm and is super athletic, but he's raw as a passer. Cassel has the experience edge, and there's a good chance he opens the season as the starter. E.J. Manuel is falling out of favor, and the 2013 first-round pick could be on the roster bubble.

Source: FOX Sports 910 Radio - Mike Jurecki

Free-agent RB Chris Johnson (Jets) is drawing interest from the Arizona Cardinals.

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cardinals must be unhappy with the running backs after Andre Ellington on the depth chart, and possibly a little bothered by Ellington's hamstring issue. David Johnson's sleeper stock is starting to dip in redraft. Chris Johnson wants to feel assured of making the team, so he might delay on answering their offer.

NO - RB C.J. Spiller third on depth chart

Source: Baton Rouge Advocate - Joel A. Erickson

New Orleans Saints RB C.J. Spiller is listed third on the depth chart heading into the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 13, against the Baltimore Ravens behind RBs Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson. Spiller is listed as the primary kickoff and punt return man.

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Spiller should work as a change-of-pace back behind Ingram, and there's a chance he could have more all-purpose yards than Ingram.

Source: Philadelphia Inquirer - Jeff McLane

Philadelphia Eagles QB Mark Sanchez has fallen far behind QB Sam Bradford in the competition for the starting job. Bradford has spent nearly 90% of the time with the first-team offense, while Sanchez has received the other 10% of the reps since training camp started.

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

Bradford is the starter if Bradford can stay healthy. Sanchez is the backup, but he may get more starts if Bradford's injury history plagues him again.

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson (hamstring) won't play if he continues to miss practice time, according to head coach Bruce Arians Tuesday, Aug. 11.

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cardinals have a banged up running back situation at this time, and that's why they've reached out to veteran Chris Johnson according to reports. The rookie David Johnson is a good all-purpose back (he's a fine receiver), and he should work as the primary backup behind Andre Ellington when healthy. We'll see if Chris Johnson is added to the mix and how that would shake things up.

Arizona Cardinals WR Michael Floyd (fingers) didn't give a timetable for his return, Tuesday, Aug. 11, and he said he'd just take it day by day.

Updating a previous story, Minnesota Vikings RB Adrian Peterson (thigh) suffered a bruise Tuesday, Aug. 11, and it is not considered to be serious.

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

A thigh bruise isn't going to slow Peterson down. He'll be fine folks, and Peterson should be a top-3 pick in most every draft out there.

Houston Texans QBs Brian Hoyer and Ryan Mallett are both listed as the starting quarterback on the Texans' depth chart.

Way to take a stand there Bill O'Brien. Hoyer and Mallett could be the worst QB combination in the league (along with Buffalo's situation), and Tom Savage isn't the answer either. Fantasy owners are wisely avoiding these quarterbacks, and their poor upside will also hold down the numbers for DeAndre Hopkins.

Dallas Cowboys RB Gus Johnson drew praise from QB Tony Romo Tuesday, Aug. 11, for his work in practice Monday. Romo said Johnson did well in both short yardage and goal-line work.

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers expects to play at least a little bit Thursday, Aug. 13, against the New England Patriots. Rodgers said he doesn't believe the No. 1 offense needs a whole lot of in-game work to get ready for the regular season.

We agree with Rodgers. There's no need to risk injury here. Just get him in for a drive, then get him out.

This situation is worth watching for fantasy owners. The Giants have Odell Beckham Jr. already dealing with hamstring problems, and Victor Cruz is coming back from the knee injury that cut his 2014 season short. They'll wisely be careful with all of these receivers as they deal with these various injuries.

CLE - RB Duke Johnson misses practice

Cleveland Browns RB Duke Johnson (hamstring) did not practice Tuesday, Aug. 11, and is not expected to play in the preseason opener Thursday, Aug. 13.

Johnson is an explosive rookie who could work well as a change-of-pace back. This hamstring injury will slow down his progress in training camp.

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Martavis Bryant (elbow) said he'll return to practice Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Great news for the Steelers here. After getting his elbow drained due to an infection, Bryant is going to get a chance to prove himself worthy of being a starter opposite Antonio Brown. Bryant is currently competing with Markus Wheaton to be the team's WR2 in 2015.

Chicago Bears WR Kevin White (shin) is running at practice Tuesday, Aug. 11.

The rookie is getting closer to a return, but he's not there yet. It's a good sign that he's running right now, and the next step is to participate in practice then team drills then the preseason. We'll see White eased in to the lineup.

DAL - RB Joseph Randle may sit out

Dallas Cowboys RB Joseph Randle (oblique) may sit out of the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 13, due to a slight oblique strain. Randle suffered the injury in practice Monday, Aug. 10. RB Gus Johnson took the first-team snaps with Randle out. FB Tyler Clutts also played some tailback and scored a touchdown in practice.

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The Cowboys don't need to aggravate any injury with their lead back. Randle should be a nice RB2 for fantasy owners this year running behind that incredible offensive line in Dallas.

BUF - RB Karlos Williams scoots up depth chart

Buffalo Bills RB Karlos Williams has moved ahead of RB Bryce Brown on the depth chart after Brown lost fumbles in consecutive practices Friday, Aug. 7, and Saturday, Aug. 8.

                                  [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The rookie from Florida State is a huge runner, measuring in at 6'1" 225 pounds. He's a natural pass-catcher who can pick up the blitz and help out on third downs. Williams is not a thumper despite his size, and he lacks instincts with the ball in his hands.

CHI - RB Matt Forte doesn't expect as many catches

Chicago Bears RB Matt Forte said he does not expect to catch as many passes this season as he did in 2014.

Forte is correct, and fantasy owners need to adjust their projections. There's a chance Forte catches half as many passes as he did last year. In 2014, Forte was targeted 130 times and caught 102 passes. This year, we think he'll snare 50-60 grabs for the Bears in the new Adam Gase offense. Forte is still a RB1 for fantasy owners, but he's one you should add at the end of the first round.

Let Reggie Bush catch passes. Let Hyde be the banger on the first two downs for the 49ers. The math is pretty simple here.

An interesting report here for fantasy owners to pour over. The move would make sense for the Colts--and for Johnson. The team has wide receiver talent falling out of their pockets, so getting a few more snaps/routes for guys like Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett or Duron Carter would make a lot of sense. Johnson's current ADP is WR18 (4.03) in 12-team PPR leagues. It will be interesting to see if this news drops his average draft position.

St. Louis Rams QB Nick Foles is comfortable with his new team in part because they are running a west coast offense, which he has used in the past. He is showing good chemistry with his new teammates.

A comfortable Foles is a better quarterback. We'll see if that high comfort level pays off with quality play in the regular season. The Philadelphia system covered up a lot of flaws with Foles. It will be interesting to see if he can flourish in a more traditional system.

An important note for fantasy owners here. Gordon is super talented, but he needs to protect the quarterback if he wants a featured role. We could see the team ease him into action at the beginning of the year if he's not quite ready to be a three-down player. Fantasy owners should consider Gordon a RB2, but he's got RB1 upside and opportunity.

Buffalo Bills RB LeSean McCoy has the ability to record 1,000 rushing yards and 1,000 receiving yards this season, according to head coach Rex Ryan. 'LeSean McCoy is a special back, a very talented guy. His merits stand up for themselves, he’s led the league in rushing, but he's a multi-dimensional guy,' Ryan said. 'He can dominate a game in the passing game and the running game, so that's what we're going to use him for, that Marshall Faulk - does he have 1,000 receiving and 1,000 rushing? That's a real possibility.'

Only two backs in NFL history have accomplished that feat. Roger Craig did it when he was with the 49ers, and Faulk did that during his time with the Rams. Both of those offenses had world-class quarterbacks and systems that thinned out the defensive front. Teams are going to stack eight in the box against Buffalo because their quarterback is Matt Cassel/Tyrod Taylor/E.J. Manuel. That means McCoy is unlikely to match what Craig and Faulk did.

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron has developed a rapport with QB Matthew Stafford this offseason. Ebron attributed communication and understanding what's going on in Stafford's head to their development. Stafford said he and Ebron are on the same page when they start talking and that Ebron understands the verbiage more than last year.

Another positive report about Ebron coming out of Lions camp. The kid has talent, but he did not produce as a rookie. Usually, tight ends take a little longer to convert to the NFL. This year, Ebron is not getting drafted in most fantasy leagues. While we don't forecast him as a potential out-of-nowhere TE1, we wouldn't be surprised to see Ebron perform like a low-end TE2.

If Beckham does play, the team should limit him to a drive or so. There's no need to re-aggravate his injury in a preseason game.

Hilton was set to make $665,000 this season, the final year of the contract he signed as a third-round rookie in 2012. Now he's signed for the next six years at an average annual salary that comes in around $10.8M per season, well below the Dez Bryant/Demaryius Thomas deals but in line with recent contracts signed by Randall Cobb and Jeremy Maclin. The Colts, who still need to sign Andrew Luck and LT Anthony Castonzo, apparently see no problem with Hilton and his clone Phillip Dorsett playing together. Those two undersized speedsters plus Donte Moncrief will be Luck's receiving corps once 34-year-old Andre Johnson moves along.

He's going to still be a TE1 for fantasy owners, but he may not be able to match the top-end production he had during his time with the Saints. Graham is currently going off the board at TE2 (3.07) in 12-team PPR leagues.

However, he's recorded only 950 yards over the last two years due to multiple injuries. Martin is fully healthy now and has stood out in training camp. The Bucs didn't pick up Martin's option for 2016, but they've maintained all along that he is the starter heading into this season. 'We would just like for him to continue what he's been doing,' head coach Lovie Smith said. 'We've all taken notice. It seems like he has a little more bounce to his step, running with confidence. And he needs to. It's an important year for Doug and for our football team to establish the run game and Doug's our starting tailback.'

We're not counting on him to bounce back to form, but he may do enough to hold onto the Bucs top spot. We consider him a mid-range RB3, and we'll be curious to see if he can start playing up to his potential again.

Pettine said McCown has received all of the snaps with the first-team offense during practice.

We'll see if he can have success in the preseason and perhaps take over as the starter later in the year if (when?) Josh McCown struggles.

Petty has good arm talent, but he's got to get used to working from under center and reading defenders as he drops back. He played in a simple, catch-the-snap-and-throw offense in college at Baylor.

                                                                      Hi Folks,

Bears wide receiver Alshon Jeffery suffered an injury that is leaving us feeling unsettled tonight. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune tweeted out that there was no sign of Jeffery after the game and he was told that Jeffery was in a walking boot. Head coach John Fox updated the situation and called it day-to-day, but there was additional information that Jeffery is also on crutches to "immobilize" the injury and speed up recovery.

Our Dr. Jene Bramel tweeted out: "Mostly questioning the day-to-day comment from Fox on Jeffery. Strain severe enough to immobilize calf fibers probably worse than low grade"

                                                                      [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ [ FOOTBALLGUYS VIEW ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ] ]

The season is a month away, so it's too early to be worried about Jeffery's Week 1 availability, but if he can't heal enough in the next two or three weeks to test the injury in the preseason, there will be an added fear of re-injury even if the plan is for him to be available Week 1. If you had Jeffery close to other receivers in his tier, at least break the ties against him until we get more news on this injury that points to clear Week 1 availability and the ability to play before the preseason is over.
