#4Interesting trade. Grilli is washed up, and I doubt his numbers get better in the tough AL West.
Not sure what LAA is thinking here, especially given how well they've played lately.Comment -

#5Mike Scioscia wouldn't stop using Frieri during high leverage situations, so the general manager, Jerry DiPoto traded him.
The exact same scenario happened last week, when the Angels released Raul Ibanez.
Basically, Mike Scioscia is the worst manager in baseball, and the only way to get him to quit using awful players in the wrong situations is to trade or release them.Comment -

#8Agree. Only Scioscia could take a roster like that -- even with the bullpen being as bad as it is -- and post the kind of record they have the past few years. He's the worst. Right up there with Kirk Gibson.Comment -

I don't think the Pirates have gotten donkey punched on many trades the last decade, they usually come out ahead.Comment -

#20is this official? if so, pure desperation for the angels. Grili was terrible with Detroit. See Hanranhan in Pittsburgh and then Boston.Comment -

#21Frieri's degree of difficulty is much higher than Grilli's in Pittsburgh. Something tells me he'll benefit from the change of scenery and regular opponents. Grilli on the other hand....Comment -

#25Not to sound like a rigtard, but sometimes watching Angels games it feels like Mike Scioscia is purposely sabotaging the team. Some of his decisions just defy all logic. Apparently, like some players, long-term contracts can result in complacency. Mike Scioscia is under contract until 2018, and his wife is best friends with the owner's wife. That means he's not going anywhere anytime soon.Comment -

#26Angels had to cut loose Frieri. Scioscia couldn't see it but at least Dipoto did. Not sure Grilli is the answer but watch for another trade to come!Comment -

#27I can see the thought process for the Pirates with Frieri being the younger guy and benefiting from the change of scenery and the move to the NL but I have no clue why the Angels would go ahead with this trade. Gotta think they were desperate for another closer and will likely use Grilli as the closer pretty soon.Comment -

#29Echoing the sentiment above, this is basically trash for trash. Grilli was a one hit wonder, and now the carriage has turned back to a pumpkin. His career stats are atrocious. On the other hand Frieri is a one pitch pitcher. You can't get by in the majors throwing fastball after fastball, especially when your command of the strike zone is awful.Comment -

#30This was a great move for the Angels. The manager fell in love with Frieri too much. He has just been a lousy reliever to trust at the back end. It should work out okay for Frieri as well not being relied on in Pittsburgh. I did not see this trade coming at all.Comment -

#31Looks like the managers were loyal to a fault with their old closers so the front office took matters into their own hands and took those options awayComment -
