Can Ohio State shut out Michigan?
Everybody except Charlie Weis, and Matt Millen knows you build championship teams with defense. Instead, Dickrod has fixated on the latest undersized running QB dejour while neglecting his defense, effectively conceding local defensive recruits to Ohio State and MSU.

The reason you need defense is because there will always come a time when your offense is having a bad day, but if you don't have a defense even bad offenses can score on you. With a strong defense, you're always in every game.

In 2007 in his final game as coach of the Mountaineers, Rodriguez's high powered offense gained less than 200 yards of offense and lost at home to a 4-7 Pitt team 13-9. This loss kept WVU out of the BCS Championship Game. Since then, nothing has changed. Rodriguez is still running up the score on bad teams to distract his fanbase from the fact that his teams have a ceiling. They always end up getting shut down by bigger, stronger, faster defenses, just like the one Dickrod allowed Ohio State to build right under his nose.

Last year, Michigan lost at home to Ohio State 21-10 thanks to 4 Tate Forcier INTs and a Forcier fumble returned for a touchdown. As of right now, there's no reason to believe they will be able to score any meaningful points against Ohio State.

As a Michigan fan, I want what's best for this program, and right now that means eliminating Rodriguez from it. Since he's already won 7 games, there's the prevailing opinion that he has saved his job for another year, and that it would take something seriously embarrassing to jeopardize that now. A shutout vs. a team with a real defense would send a message that the one thing Rodriguez knows how to do doesn't even work. Sure, you can gain yards by going 5-wide to run it up the middle. Call me old fashioned, but I'd rather have a team that gains yards by using superior talent to run it up the middle. Nebraska tried the "gimmick offense/no defense" strategy with Bill Callahan to equally disastrous results. Now they have Bo Pelini, a real defense, a 10-2 season, and back-to-back appearances in the Big XII Title Game.

Next year, the Big Ten goes to a divisional format. Can you say with any certainty that this Michigan team would finish ahead of either Nebraska, Iowa, or MSU? Could we beat Minnesota or Northwestern without having to score over 60 points?

They had Denard last year, and his one dimensional threat won't put to much damage on Ohio State. Also their at home this year which is especially big in these Rivalry games.

To the Original question, no Ohio State won't shut out Michigan they'll give up something in the 14-21 range.

I don't think there is much of a play on this game with the line being 17.

The line looks about right, and Ohio State is going to score 17 probably every quarter. So no, no shut-out.

No shutout but probably only about 10 points from Michigan. I see OSU putting up about 42. Michigan is overrated. BOL to y'all!!

If I recall correctly, OSU's defense has been rather stout since Tressel showed up in 2002, six years before Rodriguez arrived at Michigan. Don't parlay them, but take Michigan +17 and under 63.

Well Vegas thinks something around 40-23 is the final score. OSU is 7-0 ATS at home this year so far, so I think they have made the line a little high. In response to the direct question, I see no way for Michigan to get shut out in this game. However, because Ohio State plays before Wisconsin, and because Michigan's defense is so bad I think that OSU will cover. Then OSU will hope for a good showing by Northwestern vs. Wisky so that they can pass them in the BCS and go to the Rose Bowl.

Agharah1, Maybe it's time for you to become a fan of another program. Wishing for your team to get shutout in a Rivarly game is no way to spend your free time.

I agree with the others here. Rich Rod will coach at Mich again next year, OSU will not shut out Mich, and OSU will play down to Mich, only beating them by 10 points or so.

Michigan will have the same problem Auburn will have this weekend. Big, fast, strong defensive's can and will defend the spread option. When you have LB's that can run, and DE's that can contain, you don't have to sell out to stop the read. Sure, Michigan will hit a play or two, as will Auburn. But, they won't be able to sustain drives, and that will kill them.

Although Auburn is MUCH better than Mich, they have alot in common. They are big play offenses, with little to no defense. Problem is, it's tough to continuously hit big plays against defenses like Bama and Ohio St. Plus, these two have offenses that sustain long drives, and will limit the possessions a team like Mich and Auburn get. If Newton and Robinson aren't on the field, they can't score. I think both of these games are played in about 2:30 hours, because OSU and Bama will run, run, run, and AU and Mich won't be able to do anything about it.

As one poster said, with OSU going early, I look for them to really lay the wood to Mich. Somewhere in the 44-17 range. As for the Iron Bowl, I just can't lay 4 points against a good football team. I will play Bama on the ML, though.

There's no way they shut out Michigan... however I do see Ohio State winning big. Michigan is way overrated and have not been competitive against any good teams they have played all season.

I don't see any chance of a shut out either. It does not matter what the records are of either of these schools. This is truely the greatest rivalry in college football. Both sides will be up for the game.
