Lock of the century huh?
BTW the lock of the 20th century was Baltimore minus the points in Super Bowl III.

Been thinking the same thing all night. Vegas is gonna love it. I'm tempted to do a 1/2 unit just for sh!ts and giggles.

If there is a lock on this game, it's the under.
ECU is about an hour or so from my house. They have great fans. And are hard to play at home. And if this game wasn't in Blacksburg, I'd say Pirates all the way. But it is. And while ECU COULD cover 19.5, and rather easily in my opinion, they've had the benefit of looking good against two of the worst defensive teams in college football over the last decade.
VT is also coming off two horrible losses. And let's look a bit closely.
When you lose a tight game like the one to Boise, a game against a top 5 team, for which you've been preparing not just a week out, or a month out, but the whole damn off season since the spring and throughout the summer, and you lose, after being ahead in the final minutes, it's tough to recover from. You're drained mentally, emotionally, physically. You're just plain gutted. And at that point it's incredibly difficult to maintain focus and prepare for the following opponent. And kudos to JMU for capitalizing.
However, while losing a game like the one to Boise guts you, losing to a team like JMU does not. It just pisses you off. Really pisses you off. And you're angry. Violently angry. And and all you want to do is get back there on that field and break somebody's face. And VT is going to come storming onto that field against ECU and let out a whole lot of pent up physical aggression against the Pirates. And ECU ain't never going to know what hit them. 38-10 sounds like the final to me.
Could it be close, yeah. It could. But I doubt it.
No more of that talk, or I'll put the leeches on you.

That theory only works in hockey where they play every other day...I use this theory in hockey A LOT
Football is ONCE a week, they have all week to get over the loss and move on...this has no meaning to this game what so ever if you ask me, nor to football. I hear this theory all the time in football and it just does not make sense to me, never has never will...one game a week, come on think about it.

ECU has given up close to 1,000 yards in their first 2 games.

I somewhat disagree...a loss to a team like JMU does piss you off, but it also makes you start to doubt your ability. Its embarrassing and deflating. That said, we all know that Va Tech actually has a lot of ability after watching the Boise St game, especially offensively. They are totally capable of smoking ECU, but it will be all about their confidence, which is unpredictable. ECU +20 would be a lock if Va Tech didnt have the capability and talent, but they do. Its a pass for me. Could be close, could be a spanking.

I can see what you're saying, but I have a counter...
"Confidence" in football is mostly about how capable you are in imposing your will on the other team. Which is to say, can you dominate them off the ball? Are you able to shed their blocks and hit them harder than they are hitting you? Is your o-line pushing their d-line around?
VT couldn't do that consistently against Boise. Which is why that game could have hurt their confidence.
But the loss to JMU is different. Poor execution due to lack of focus on third down and game mismanagement is what cost them that game, not down to down physicality. And they know that. And they are looking to come out and redeem themselves for not being prepared mentality and emotionally for that game. VT most likely "went through the motions" all week in practice after the Boise loss, and that lethargy carried over into the game against JMU, because powerhouse teams tend to think they can get away with a "C" or "D" effort and still crush the little guys. There will be no such overlooking or lack of passion this week on VT's part. You can count on that.
No more of that talk, or I'll put the leeches on you.

Someone else asked if you've ever played organized football. And I'm sort of wondering that myself.
Different teams do things differently, but depending on what the coaches are going over from the week before, how they handled the loss themselves emotionally, and what's discussed in film that week, there's plenty of ways that your mistakes and missed opportunities in a tough loss get brought up over and over again so that it's hard to "get over the loss and move on." Sometimes it just weighs on you. It saps your strength, confidence, emotionally energy, it's hard to get fired up in time for saturday.
But I can promise you they'll be ready for ECU. The loss to JMU is going to have the polar opposite effect on the Hokies that the loss to Boise had.
ECU has yet to play a good defense. And we've seen how these high powered spread offenses get dismantled by defenses with speed and physical play. RE: Hawaii vs Georgia in the Sugarbowl.
ECU's offense is largely based on timing, and getting off the ball. And it's a lot easier to do that against the likes of Tulsa/Memphis than VT.
Duke's football team is averaging close to 50 pts a game right now. Their quarterback has thrown for about 350 yds per game. But then, they've played Elon and Wake Forest. Does anybody really think they're going to maintain even half of that pace against Alabama?
I'd say one person does. And that one person is me. And I only believe that because I'm sympathetic for my pops who went to Duke back in the day and I think it's crushing his soul watching the football team suck year after year. I want Duke to beat Alabama for my dad so he can see something uplifting before he dies. I want it so bad for him I'm tempted to find whatever hotel 'Bama is staying in friday night and smash their Qb's knees with a tire-iron. I'm delusional. But no more delusional than anybody that thinks ECU is staying close in this one.
No more of that talk, or I'll put the leeches on you.

yeah, well, you've got to grow up a little crazy when you're dad's an active Duke football fan.
I give him credit for his loyalty, but I'm fairly certain it's costing him his sanity. And mine too, as evidenced by my edging closer to crossing the line into the realm of the criminally insane. There's a reason I'm known as the Madcap.
